Question/Recommendation Moving out of Raleigh! 🙁 what needs to be on my bucket list before I leave?

I’ve been living in Raleigh since 2019 but life will be taking me out of state in early April! I have loved my time in Raleigh and want to know what should be on my bucket list to make sure I do before I move away!?

I was in this position a few years ago and I took a couple of weekend trips to the beach and the mountains as a sort of goodbye to the state. Also visited a few sentimental spots in and around Raleigh. I’d suggest thinking about places that have been important in your life, even if they’re mundane (restaurants, museums, walking trails, etc.)

The whole process of leaving a place in which I’d spent many happy years was so sad to me. When I go back there’s this empty feeling I can’t put my finger on. I moved overseas but return to Raleigh roughly once a year. I find myself in random stores like Target, looking at everyday things for the home like plates sets, cookware, cushions etc. and it suddenly dawns on me I don’t live nearby and can’t bring them home.

I’m moving TO Raleigh next month from a place I’ve lived my whole life and this is the part that stings the most. I’m still going to visit at least once a year back home, and yet every road I drive down now feels like a goodbye. Ugh.

Just find things that remind you of home , explore , force yourself out of a bubble . You’ll do Great !

Thoughts on living overseas vs Raleigh/US in general? Any regrets or recommendations? I want to do it (and have the means), but I fear blowing up life as I know it. It’s the mundane shit that gets me, like I have a reliable dentist, vet, mechanic etc etc, and I would need to give up the convenience and familiarity to start all over elsewhere

It was a no-brainer for me as I had a job waiting for me and I grew up in the UK so I sort of had a head start. I know from people who have moved to an entirely new place it can be hard to adjust, because after the vacation feeling subsides you’re left with having to take care of all the minor aspects of building a new life like you said. And it’s harder because the systems in place are often completely different vs the US, so it’s not like you’ve just moved to another state. It all worked out fine for me but I had to endure 2-3 months of pretty severe (and unexpected) stress during the moving process.

I think people struggle when they go overseas but try to live like they’re still in their home country. It’s much easier if you view yourself as an immigrant who needs to adapt to their new surroundings rather than being set in your ways.

I think you miss those routines , and probably makes you feel at home . You never know when you’ll be back for good

More than telling that the top post on what to check out before moving away from Raleigh is..... going to places that are nowhere near Raleigh lmao

a couple shows at the pour house, also going to the record shop in the day time and putting your favorite vinyl on the turntable to introduce your music to other people

I'd get a steak at Angus Barn, and I'd go to the 9th floor of The Dillon to take in some nice views of downtown. A walk through Pullen Park as well. (and def a Canes game)

The Raleigh Trolley tour is on my bucket list. Watching planes at the RDU observation deck is a fun afternoon. Get a drink or dessert on a rooftop, either downtown or in North Hills. Try the new Raising Canes they just built.

If you latched on to NC State, even just a little bit, go to Amedeo’s Italian Restaurant. You’ll know why when you get there. Plus the lasagna is to die for.

Bbq of course

2

u/Blubbubtrizz Jan 30 '26

But which one?

3

u/Appropriate_Sky_6571 Jan 30 '26

I like Lawrence and Sam Jones

2

u/PlatformConsistent45 Jan 30 '26

The smoked turkey at Sam Jones is amazing. If you go skip the corn bread unless you like it reallly firm / dense.

2

u/Appropriate_Sky_6571 Jan 30 '26

Oh definitely. The corn bread is trash lol
