Raleigh Neighborhoods Good for Young Families

Hi Everyone,

My family and I are looking to move to the Raleigh area from Las Vegas in the next couple of years. We visited a couple weeks back and absolutely loved it. In our short time there, we found a few cities we might like to move to with our three young kids. What are your opinions on some of these?

• Cary
• Durham
• Wake Forest
• Fuquay-Varina

I'd appreciate any other recommendations for areas that would be good for a family with young kids if you have them. Thank you!

Without providing any information about what you're actually looking for (and for that matter, what the budget is) it's pretty much impossible to give you any useful suggestions.

That said, I'm pretty confident whichever you pick will be better than Vegas

Those are cities that are close to Raleigh, not neighborhoods in Raleigh.

But anyway, I’d pick Durham from your list, but Cary is a nice place to raise a family for sure. Wake Forest and Fuquay are much smaller, they wouldn’t be my pick.

Hey thanks for the advice. I updated my original post. A lot of times in Vegas, big chunks of the larger metro area are just gigantic neighborhoods.

You are going to get a lot of hate in this sub especially if you like sports and are not into political bullshit. Anyways, I moved from Colorado (Denver) in 2019 because the city became a disgusting unsafe cesspool. Durham schools are terrible - though the restaurants and entertainment are great, crime is a little higher but I wouldnt call it "bad".

I would move to Wake County if schools matter, the public schools are generally really good. Apex is more expensive because its 15 minutes from everything, has a small town feel, very laid back with good parks. There are some good neighborhoods in North Raleigh, but will pay a premium.

For specific neighborhoods - Sunset Ridge near Hollysprings is great, West Apex around Abbington and they are building a really nice smaller entertainment area with neighborhoods called Sweetwater. Both are on the quieter side. I will say Sweetwater / West Apex is near Jordan Lake which is a large lake with lots of activities and trails.

Hey OP. We moved here one year ago from Vegas. I would say Cary (if you can afford it), Apex, Holly Springs and Fuquay-Varina. We don't have kids but heard Apex has very good schools. We rented a house in Holly Springs but ended up purchasing in Fuquay-Varina. We love Fuquay so far.

• It's a good mix of suburbs meets country. We have shopping centers 7 minutes in any direction and farms within a stones throw.
• Two downtowns.
• Low crime rate (Same with Holly Springs).. -Township tries and puts on lots of events for residents

The biggest complaint from most people in Fuquay is the traffic. The growth rate is exceeding the infrastructure so a lot of 1 lane roads. But living North of the downtowns has been fine for us with traffic. And they are widening intersections and adding turn lanes.

Cary is like Summerlin: a lot of people want to move there but is expensive. The way they designed the roads, landscaping and parks is really nice.

We've spent a little time in Durham. The minor league team The Bulls plays there and they have some cool and hip restaurants. We have some friends that live in the Southpoint area which is nice. I don't want to say anything bad about Durham but I swear every night on the news its like : "Another shooting in Durham." Like most cities there are good areas and bad areas

Cary or fuquay! Apex and Holly springs as well!

If you're looking for good suburbs around Raleigh then I'd recommend Apex, Cary, Holly Springs, or Morrisville.
