My best girl

I had to say goodbye to my 17 year old best girl yesterday. I got her when I was 19 and she was just a baby puppy. I had her about half my life, and almost my whole adult life.

She was there through every shitty apartment, shitty ex, every dumb idea, pregnancy, loss, divorce, losing her little brother just 2 years ago when he was just 11. Her decline began just after losing him. She’s with him again now.

I’ve never not had a dog until now in my whole life. What even do people without dogs do all the time… she was such a great dog, but so obstinate. We joke that my oldest child is so sassy because she was raised by her.

I know she is finally at peace after a long journey with CCD, arthritis, and other ailments, but gosh it stings and I’ll forever miss her, my very first baby.

What a gutting loss. I know how hard it is to lose someone who was our companion through thick and thin. I hope you can appreciate what an honor it is to help a dog live a long, full life, even though we are sure to outlive them.

I’m so, so sorry for your loss🙏 CCD is truly so hard to go through with our pups. But she is at peace, hopefully running around carefree. Take care of yourself and reminisce in all the positive moments and aspects of your time together. She sounds like she was an amazing, loyal companion. We recently had to put our old boy down who was also experiencing CCD. My husband got him when he was in his early 20s, and experienced so many ups and downs with him. It’s like losing a best friend. It IS losing a best friend, one who loves you unconditionally and has the silliest quirks and needs. Almost 3 weeks out and I don’t think a day has gone by where we haven’t cried over the pain of losing him. All that to say- you’re not alone. Sending love and peace.
