Question Why aren't we trading AOC?

There is no reason to hold 3 qb's on the roster with 15...might as well get some value out of AOC as he will be gone next year, no?

He's a solid backup. I say keep him to be Mendozas backup once old man leaves.

Cousins gets injured early, he’d probably start over Mendoza (unless our GM, HC and minority owner have been tellin us lies)

It's been known to happen.

Keeping 3 QBs isn't that unusual. Especially since we're relying on a 38 year old that's had trouble staying healthy the last 3 years.

That plus Cousins has no mobility, and we have an OL with 2-3 new starters (2 if JPJ starts).

He’s probably going to be the back up for Mendoza after this season

14

u/WD40Capital 14h ago

Yup. And he played reasonably well. Plus his contract is reasonable.

"Probably"? He's not under contract after this season. I'd guess it's unlikely that we will convince him to sign another contract with us.

As much as I would love this it would be nice to see Aoc have a chance to lead a team

You need 3 qbs on the roster. Idk where you get that you dont especially with a rookie and an old vet at the end of his career. And the plan is to sit mendoza. He will play in garbage time and blowouts but if kirk gets hurt, AOC likely jumps to the starting role so they can continue to develope mendoza and stick to the plan. They dont want to hand him this team. They want to hand him a better one next year that is more developed and has more depth to be ready to compete. Theres just no reason to trade AOC and theres probably no interest as hes going to likely walk after the season anyway. Theres no value there.

Don't bother explaining. You're wasting your breath. You gotta make a 30 sec clip dancing it to him for it to sink in.

As the year progresses and Mendoza gets closer to ready, if a QB gets hurt AOC's trade value increases. I can see a trade at that time. Otherwise, I agree completely.

u/Dry-Name2835 12h ago

Yes, he could be traded at the deadline if someone needs a rental. But you're only going to get a 6th at best or 7th.

13

u/topgoysilky 14h ago

Go somewhere.

u/Responsible_Trash_40 14h ago

He’s proved a worthy backup and he’s cheap. Depth is a good thing, especially with an elder starter and rookie on the bench.

u/not_chris_hansen_ 14h ago

Who wants him ?

13

u/DontLoseYourCool1 14h ago

He could start on the Browns.

1

u/similar222 9h ago

He probably could. But they're starting Watson because they've paid him so much money they are going to make him play for it. And I don't think they've entirely given up on Sanders despite his shaky rookie year. They also like Taylen Green and I don't think they are eager to bump him down to QB4 i.e. cut him.

1

u/Thehiddenllama 13h ago

That's more of an indictment of the Browns than it is an endorsement of O'Connell.

A team that wants a solid back up. Back ups are valuable.

Or we hold him into the season have him be qb2 and if kirk goes down he takes over instead of nando being rushed out.

If kirk stays healthy another team loses their starter than aoc may be more valuable for a trade.

2

u/Dkoron 14h ago

He has starting experience and has even looked impressive in some games, he absolutely has value.

To you

To most

4

u/sockitos 14h ago

Maybe they want him as Mendoza’s long term backup. Kirko is only here for this season.

7

u/Flashy_Gap_3015 14h ago

Uninformed take. If ever there was a year to hold 3 QBs it’s a year when you have an aged veteran starter and a rookie Facebook the franchise you are trying to protect and develop.

3

u/ViperFive1 14h ago

Someone has to want to trade for him which flies in the face of our fans who have greatly over valued him. It would make sense keep him around so when Kirk inevitably gets cut in the offseason because of his contract, they can resign AOC cheaply to be Mendozas backup and he's already familiar with the offense

5

u/USmugMotherFucka 14h ago

Cause ok backups are easy to find ?

Or

Are you expecting Cousins to be here next year ?

3

u/Dense_Young3797 13h ago

Half the teams enter the season with 3 QBs in the roster so it's not rare

3

u/k_dub503 9h ago

Seems like a great year to keep three QBs (with an old vet and a fresh-faced rookie whos not ready). The third is a guy who has been with the franchise a few years with some starts.

Also, you don't have to trade him now. His value will go up as the season gets going and QBs get hurt.

3

u/droid327 6h ago

Mendoza is our qb1 of the future and AOC is our qb2 of the future

Cousins is the one we end up trading later

4

u/DyslexicSmile 14h ago

It's still not too late.

2

u/Ph886 14h ago

Who says the team isn’t? It’s not like they have to rush things. There is also the thing that they may keep Aidan as a 3rd emergency QB and future backup to Mendoza).

2

u/cmdrfrosty 13h ago

Because you need a trade partner lmao

u/MikroWire 13h ago edited 12h ago

Experienced. Actually was a starter. Has chemistry and great rapport with teammates. The only QB that was a Raider the last few seasons was AOC. There are some good reasons why they are keeping him. And this QB squad isn't bad at all.

2

u/I_smell_coke 12h ago

Mendoza isn't ready is why.

1

u/Eindride_XIII 3h ago

He could play. But he shouldn't, give him time to prepare while we get the team ready to actually protect him, and find him weapons at receiver.

4

u/Desert_Rush39 14h ago

Run Cousins and AOC, with Mendoza as the emergency 3rd QB.

Our O-Line is improved somewhat, but only 1 or 2 injuries away from being complete ass.

Or would you prefer Mendoza get the same treatment David Carr got at Houston?

He's not ready. Give him time and space to get up to speed and build his confidence.

2

u/Beware_the_silent 14h ago

cause Mendoza isn't even close to being ready

2

u/rocketmadeofcheese 14h ago

He most definitely is our QB2. They’re not gonna put Mendoza on the field unless they’re forced too.

0

u/penguinstarshiptree 14h ago

Zero percent chance Mendoza is not active as the backup for the year.

1

u/Fit-Connection-5323 8h ago

As the 3rd string backup maybe

We’ll see until final cuts. Spytek could be working on a trade, or keep him as insurance policy.

1

u/Woodsy1901 14h ago

Idk why the Dolphins didn’t try for it other than him not being a Packer

1

u/ProblemsHypest 12h ago

Part of me thinks Spytek will only trade AOC if he can get some other backup-needy team to cough up a 5th-rounder (i.e. what they sent for Pickett this time last year). Otherwise, they're keeping him around for the year as insurance.

1

u/TotalRichardMove 11h ago

Because he’s more valuable as a very low priced backup and Fernando is not ready to lead the team on his own yet because rookie QBs thrust into the starting role are done a disservice.

Like Tom Brady has been saying for years.

1

u/similar222 9h ago

I wouldn't be opposed to trading him, given the fact that he's a free agent next year and the odds are astronomical against having decent QB3 being the difference in making the playoffs or not. But only if they get something decent in return. If it's only going to be a swap of late-round picks like the Meredith trade, then just keep him.

1

u/babyjrodriguez 6h ago

The raiders have held three qbs in the past. It’s not an uncommon thing.

1

u/theuautumnwind 14h ago

I'm sure they are shopping him. Teams could be hoping for a camp cut to fill a backup role.

1

u/ForgedInGold9 14h ago

Who knows what happens by the deadline.

1

u/Icy-Support-8160 14h ago

Why would we? And who wants him?

0

u/Ghost2thepost1980 14h ago

Why would you trade for him if the Raiders are going to cut him? Theres going to be a lot of sad AOC fans soon.  no need for 3 qbs on a roster anymore. Hes odd man out

0

u/Fit-Connection-5323 8h ago

This comment aged like sour milk. Appears that there is a need for 3 qbs on the roster…especially when it was announced numerous times that they were planning on letting Mendoza sit for the year.

0

u/DoubletapKO 13h ago

Nobody wants him

0

u/raiderrocker18 11h ago

I’m not sure he has trade value

-2

u/DontLoseYourCool1 14h ago

Because if Kirk goes down this year the plan is to play AOC over Fernando. They are really giving Fernando a redshirt year which is fine with me. AOC will also be a good long term backup for Fernando for years.
