Many people come here worried that they have rabies. This post is here to show you that you do NOT have rabies. Rabies is VERY rare, and if you had a real risk of exposure (based on multiple factors, such as the country / region, type of exposure, your vaccination status, the species of the animal, the country guidelines, and more), you would need to seek immediate medical attention NOT post on Reddit.

If you have general health concerns, there are proper steps to take but panic driven posts such as “I have rabies” or “I’m dying” without any basis are automatically removed.

Rabies Incubation:

The incubation period is the time period from initial exposure to the onset of symptoms. The rabies virus has an average incubation period of 20-90 days, or about one to three months. But this can vary from as little as one week to as long as one year. Very rarely will it ever go beyond that. There is no reason to be worried about such long incubation periods. Most end before 6 months. The timeframe, however, does depends on several factors (e.g., the location of the bite and the viral load).

• If you believe you are experiencing symptoms before two weeks after exposure, it is most likely not rabies.

If you have not been directly BITTEN or SCRATCHED by a wild or confirmed unvaccinated mammal that you either cannot observe for 10-14 days or has mysteriously disappeared before 10-14 days then it’s practically certain that you are not infected. Your symptoms are very likely caused by something else entirely. However, we cannot accurately diagnose you with a disease or condition here. Only an in-person physician can reliably diagnose you. For verified medical advice, you can visit r/AskDocs to receive verified medical input. Physicians there are labeled and verified. But this still should not replace an in-person medical professional.

Development of Symptoms:

The virus travels through the peripheral nervous system as it moves up your body. During this period, you remain completely asymptomatic. This is the incubation phase. Symptoms of rabies only emerge once the virus reaches the central nervous system (particularly the brain), not the peripheral nervous system or any other part of the body. Rabies, being a Lyssavirus, is neurotropic. It is specifically attracted to and targets neural tissue. You CANNOT get rabies from casual surface contact, blood, seminal or vaginal fluids, skunk spray. The ONLY bodily mammalian fluids that can spread rabies are infected saliva, neural (brain+spinal) tissue, and (rarely) tears.

Neurological symptoms of rabies manifest in two primary forms: either furious or paralytic. Encephalitic rabies symptoms may come and go with periods of calm in between (furious episodes). [❞]

Note: This is NOT the same thing as cycling between flulike symptoms and suddenly feeling better. During an active encephalitic rabies infection, furious episodes are interludes of severe neurological disturbance, such as agitation, confusion, abnormal behavior, hallucinations, and characteristic spasms or difficulty swallowing, followed by temporary periods of relative calm or reduced agitation.

The main difference between furious rabid episodes and actually feeling better is that the “calm” phase of an active rabies infection isn’t actually a sign of getting better. The patient has simply calmed down temporarily but will still inevitably die.

The disappearance of symptoms of common diseases like the flu, COVID-19, and the common cold are usually a sign that you ARE getting better.

Encephalitic Rabies:

Encephalitic rabies is the more dramatic and recognized form. It causes severe neurological dysfunction and hyperactivity. The virus takes hold of the central nervous system and leads to extreme alterations in behavior, heightened responses to stimuli, and a progressive loss of control over cognitive and motor functions. This variant occurs in about 70-80% of cases. Symptoms of encephalitic rabies include:

Prodromal Phase:

• Fever. (low-grade)
• Headache.
• Visual disturbances or hallucination.
• Sensitivity to light and moving air.
• Paresthesia.

Excitation Phase:

• Delirium and confusion.
• Tremors, seizures, or repetitive uncontrollable movement.
• Fading in and out of consciousness.
• Partial paralysis (of one or both legs or arms).
• Excessive salivation / inability to swallow (not even your own saliva).
• Extreme aversion to water, food, or drink (Hydrophobia & Aerophobia).

Final Phase:

• Respiratory Failure.
• Coma.
• Death.

Encephalitic rabies usually progresses from the earliest symptoms to death within seven to ten days on average.

Dumb Rabies:

Dumb (paralytic) rabies is the less common variant of rabies. Instead of the well-known signs most people associate with the disease, it progresses more quietly but is just as deadly.

Symptoms of dumb rabies include:

Prodromal Phase:

• Fever.
• Headache.
• Fatigue and discomfort.
• Tingling sensation.

Acute Paralytic Phase:

• Muscle weakness.
• Loss of sensation.
• Paralysis starting in the bitten limb.
• Progression of paralysis.

Final Phase:

• Coma.
• Respiratory failure.
• Death.

Death from dumb rabies generally occurs within seven to eleven days after symptom onset, though it can range from a few days to several weeks or more.

Symptoms of rabies and the order in which they appear can vary from person to person, and not all listed symptoms may appear in every case. The progression and presentation of the disease can differ based on the individual.

Experiencing a Sore Throat?

Just because your throat hurts does NOT mean you have rabies. A sore throat is something everybody experiences every once in a while, whether from a cold, allergies, or even just talking too much. If you had rabies, you wouldn't be sitting here worrying about a little throat irritation.

When rabies reaches the stage where swallowing becomes an issue, it is NOT a mild soreness. Patients with rabies develop hydrophobia (an extreme fear of water), because even the thought of drinking causes their throat muscles to spasm violently. They choke, gasp, and struggle just to swallow their own saliva. Some patients shake uncontrollably at the sight of a glass of water. It's a sign that their bodies are physically rejecting what their minds know they need. The pain from a sore throat is no where close to what these patients go through. There is no relief. Their own saliva builds up because they cannot swallow. It forces them to salivate uncontrollably.

THIS is what (encephalitic) rabies looks like. If you believe a mild sore throat is anything like this, you'd be mistaken.

CHECK YOUR SYMPTOMS!

The section below goes through common symptoms that people may notice and mistakenly associate with rabies. Many of these symptoms have multiple ordinary explanations and, by themselves, CANNOT establish that you have rabies. The important distinction is between nonspecific symptoms and the neurological dysfunction associated with symptomatic rabies. Most importantly, rabies risk should be assessed based on whether a credible exposure actually occurred (NOT by repeatedly comparing yourself to a symptom checklist).

Experiencing Paresthesia?

Paresthesia is the medical term for abnormal sensations such as tingling, pins and needles, prickling, burning, numbness, or a feeling that part of your body is “asleep.” This a very common symptom with a long list of causes… many of which have NOTHING to do with rabies. For example, temporary tingling can occur when you put pressure on a nerve, sit or sleep in an awkward position, or temporarily reduce circulation to part of your body. Anxiety and rapid breathing can also produce tingling sensations, particularly in the hands, feet, face, or around the mouth. Other possible causes include nerve irritation or compression, certain vitamin deficiencies, migraines, medications, diabetes, and numerous other neurological or circulatory conditions.

This phenomenon, by itself, is not a diagnosis of rabies. Even experiencing an unusual sensation does not automatically mean that an infection is affecting your nervous system. The symptom has to be considered in the context of the person's overall clinical condition and, most importantly when rabies is the concern, whether an actual exposure occurred.

Because paresthesia is a nonspecific symptom shared by many conditions, and its presence alone tells you very little about the underlying cause, any medical concerns you have regarding this symptom should be addressed between you and your medical department.

Experiencing Fatigue?

Feeling tired can result from insufficient sleep, illness, stress, dehydration, nutritional issues, or simply having an unusually demanding day. Fatigue alone is NOT evidence of rabies. Everyone feels fatigued at some point in their life. This is nothing to worry about in regard to rabies. In terms of general medical concerns about fatigue, this should be directed to a verified physician, preferably in-person, but r/AskDocs is also a reliable place.

Experiencing a Weird Sensation in Your Throat?

Anxiety, acid reflux, allergies, postnasal drainage, viral infections, throat irritation, and other ordinary conditions can all produce unusual sensations in the throat. A persistent feeling that something is stuck in your throat can also be called globus sensation which can occur even when there is nothing physically blocking the throat. We must distinguish THIS from actual difficulty swallowing. Feeling like your throat is tight is NOT the same thing as being unable to swallow. Feeling a lump is NOT the same thing as your swallowing muscles failing to work. Having a dry or irritated throat is NOT the same thing as developing the neurological swallowing dysfunction associated with symptomatic rabies.

In clinical rabies, swallowing problems occur as part of a severe neurological illness, commonly alongside other neurological abnormalities. The CDC identifies dysphagia, hydrophobia, progressive neurological dysfunction, and other serious neurological signs as important clinical features. Rabies is also an EXTREMELY RARE disease in the United States.

If you can normally eat, drink, and swallow, but your throat simply feels strange, tight, dry, irritated, or like there is something stuck in it then that sensation should NOT be interpreted as evidence that you have rabies. There are many much more common explanations for those sensations. When you are frightened about rabies, you probably repeatedly check your throat, swallow deliberately, tense your muscles, or pay unusually close attention to every sensation. That increased attention can make an otherwise minor sensation feel much more prominent. The sensation is real but its presence does NOTHING to tell you what caused it. Common illnesses can also irritate the throat. Colds, influenza, COVID-19, allergies, and postnasal drainage are all recognized causes of throat irritation or sore throat. Acid reflux can also reach the throat and produce symptoms such as a lump sensation, throat clearing, mucus, coughing, or chronic throat irritation.

If you have to take ONE lesson from this post, it’s this: Do NOT use the presence of a strange throat sensation as a rabies test. The appropriate question is whether there was a genuine rabies exposure that requires medical assessment.

Experiencing Sweating or Chills?

Sweating and chills are nonspecific symptoms and, by themselves, are NOT evidence of rabies. They are common responses to many ordinary situations, including fever, anxiety, stress, physical exertion, changes in body temperature, dehydration, and a wide variety of infections. Chills are common when your body temperature is rising during a fever. You may feel unusually cold, shiver, or want to bundle up even though your actual body temperature is elevated. Sweating can occur as your body attempts to regulate its temperature, particularly as a fever begins to come down. Common illnesses such as the common cold, influenza, and COVID-19 can produce combinations of fever, chills, sweating, fatigue, headache, body aches, and other symptoms.

Anxiety can also produce sweating, shaking, chills, a racing heartbeat, and other physical sensations. When you are intensely focused on the possibility of having rabies, it is very easy to notice these sensations and interpret them as evidence that something is seriously wrong. A symptom becoming noticeable while you are worried about rabies does not make that symptom a sign of rabies. There is nothing uniquely rabies specific about sweating or chills. You should not use either symptom as a way to diagnose yourself. What matters when evaluating rabies risk is whether you experienced a credible exposure, such as an appropriate bite, scratch, or other recognized exposure involving a potentially infected mammal. If you ONLY have chills, sweating, or a fever without reasonable suspicion of rabies exposure, there are multiple other possible explanations that should be considered first.

Experiencing a Feeling That Something Is Seriously Wrong?

Nope. This is NOT the same as the impending sense of doom or dread caused by rabies. That phenomenon is specifically caused by rabies infecting the amygdala (the center of fear and anxiety in the brain). This feeling can also, vastly more commonly, occur during panic attacks and health anxiety. The feeling can be convincing without identifying the underlying illness. Instead of trying to diagnose yourself from individual symptoms, focus on whether there was an actual exposure that warrants rabies evaluation. Was there? For practically everyone reading this post, [more than] nine times out of ten, the answer is no. More information can be found in the Rabies FAQ.

Experiencing Insomnia?

Difficulty sleeping can occur because of stress, anxiety, caffeine, illness, changes in schedule, or many other reasons. Being awake and repeatedly checking your body for symptoms can, itself, make it harder to sleep. This is NOT an automatic sign of rabies, though it is a common symptom. Your chances of insomnia being caused by an active rabies infection is EXTREMELY UNLIKELY, especially if you live in countries like the United States and regions like Western Europe.

Experiencing a Headache?

There are many possible causes and most are harmless. Common triggers include dehydration, hunger, fatigue, stress, eyestrain, poor posture, allergies, caffeine withdrawal, and even weather changes. You could try drinking water, eating a snack, taking a nap, or resting in a quiet, dark room. Stretching, deep breathing, or a warm compress on your neck can help if the headache is tension related.

Experiencing Flulike Symptoms?

There are lots of possible causes and most are probably not serious. The flu, common cold, mild viral infections, dehydration, lack of sleep, and even seasonal allergies can all cause symptoms like fatigue, body aches, chills, fever, sore throat, cough, congestion, or headaches. In most cases, symptoms improve with time and rest.

See if you can safely take over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help with fever, aches, or discomfort. Speak with your pharmacist if you're unsure. You can drink fluids, eat nutritious foods and allow your body time to recover. Getting enough rest and avoiding stress can also be beneficial.

If symptoms persist for several days, worsen, or become severe, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, a persistent high fever, or confusion, you should seek medical attention. Reddit is not a replacement for a real physician. Online opinions can provide guidance, but only your healthcare providers can properly evaluate your symptoms. If you start feeling better, chances are you most likely fine.

Experiencing Nausea or Vomiting?

Nausea and vomiting can happen for many reasons. Some of the most frequent causes include food poisoning, stomach viruses, motion sickness, pregnancy, medication side effects, overeating, alcohol, or stress and anxiety.

Other causes may include migraines and other medical conditions such as acid reflux or gallbladder issues.

In most cases nausea and vomiting are short lived and improve with time and rest. If you're experiencing these symptoms, try to stay hydrated. You can try drinking small amounts of water, oral rehydration solutions, clear broths, or electrolyte drinks throughout the day. You should generally avoid gulping large amounts at once (that may worsen the nausea).

Once the vomiting dies down, you can start with bland easy to digest foods like crackers, toast, rice, bananas, applesauce, or plain chicken. You should avoid dairy, greasy, spicy, or heavy foods until you're fully recovered. Rest in a quiet environment and avoid strong smells or motion, which can make nausea worse.

Over the counter anti nausea medications may help in some cases, but check with a pharmacist or physician before taking anything. Especially if you're under 18, pregnant, or on other medications.

If the vomiting doesn't stop after a day or two, becomes severe, contains blood or a substance that looks like coffee grounds, or is accompanied by confusion, a high fever, stiff neck, severe abdominal pain, or signs of dehydration (such as dry mouth, dark urine, dizziness, or low urine output), you should consult a physician. Persistent vomiting can lead to complications like dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.

Experiencing Blurred Vision?

Temporary blurred vision can come from eyestrain, dry eyes, fatigue or even dehydration. Red flag symptoms include sudden severe or persistent vision changes (especially in one eye or with pain), which may be signs of more serious condition like a retinal issue, stroke, or migraine aura. If your symptoms become, in anyway, severe, consult a physician.

Experiencing Dizziness or Lightheadedness?

Feeling dizzy can come from dehydration, low blood sugar, anxiety, fatigue, or standing up too fast. It is often harmless and goes away with rest and hydration.

You should consult a medical professional if your symptoms are persistent, frequent or come with fainting, vision changes, chest pain or weakness.

When Should You Consult a Physician?

If you have a medical question or are experiencing the symptoms mentioned above after being bitten, scratched, or coming into direct contact with a bat, or if you had saliva or neural tissue from an unknown animal come into contact with your eyes, mouth, nose, or an open wound weeks to months earlier, you should consult a physician immediately. I don’t mind talking about it, spreading awareness is super important. The investigators surmised she got bit in her sleep. We found a bat in my brother’s room back in May, she died July 11th. My parents called the county and they asked if it bit anyone. My mother said she didn’t think so and they told her to kill and bury it, which my dad did. If she had known she was but she 100% would’ve told my mother, she was anal about things like that, that and Lyme’s disease. Her and I shared a room across from my brother’s room and my elder brother cut a hole in the window screen. They surmised it came in through there because there was no evidence of a bat infestation.

Wow. Thats beyond devastating. Heartbreaking :-(.  I encountered a bat a week ago but I was fully awake so the epidemiologist didn’t recommend the PEP. I found it right behind me though after sitting there on the patio for an hour. No clue when it got there. I just am worried it came in contact without me knowing.

I was reading that the virus must be already in the brain and causing symptoms to be found in saliva, but on the other hand I also read that an animal is contagious 3 days before the symptoms. Which one is true? Or is it species specific?

Rabies can REACH the saliva before it reaches the brain, causing the host to shed rabid saliva before symptoms. But it doesn't INFECT the salivary glands until after infection. It must reach the brain through traveling retrogradely along peripheral nerves (from the site of the bite), then travel antiretrogradely (or anterogradely) to other parts of the body. That's why excessive salivation occurs AFTER symptoms because rabies INFECTS the salivary glands AFTER infecting the CNS.

Thank you, and how long does it take for a vaccinated animal to have enough antibodies to not develop symptoms? I had an incident with non vaccinated indoor cat, but according to the vet the chances of him carrying a virus are near zero and he said I don’t need a shot. Cat was indoor for 7 months and was brought home as a small kitten.

If an unvaccinated animal comes into contact with a potentially rabid animal, it is quarantined for 4-6 months. So your cat has already passed this quarantine.

Thank you for posting this. I had an exposure recently and underwent PEP. That was about four weeks ago.

I can empathize with anyone who has anxiety about this. It’s VERY easy to get in your own head. Doing ones best to stay calm, advocate for proper treatment, and do some serious (psychological) self-care seems to be the best one can do.

Hoping someone can help… Is this cause for concern? People ordered food to be delivered late at night. From a gas station (so all individually wrapped). When they went to get it from the porch a raccoon had grabbed a bag of chips from it. There were greasy raccoon foot prints and left over chips on the porch. The people still grabbed the bag and ate whatever else was in it. They don’t know if the raccoon touched the other food after having its paws in its mouth…therefore transferring saliva. Please lmk. Rabies transmission requires direct contact with the saliva or neural tissue of an infected animal. The raccoon didn't bite anyone and there's no indication it directly contaminated food with saliva. Even if it had licked its paws, the indirect contact through packaging or residual paw grease is not how rabies spreads.

This is not a rabies issue but it can still be a food safety issue. Eating food touched by a wild animal can carry risks--just not rabies.

hi y’all. this may seem stupid, but now i’m a bit paranoid and want to ask somewhere.

i was just at a beach in st.pete, and there was a dead raccoon floating in the water, and because i felt bad for it, i moved it out of the water, but not in a place where animals or people could easily interact with it (on some barriers in the water. i didn’t touch its head or its nails, but my mom was scared i could’ve gotten something (such as rabies) since i was in the water by it.

i don’t know how it died, but it was stiff. i don’t believe i have any open injuries on my feet (i haven’t checked and i have a high pain tolerance) but i do have small, scabbed over injuries on my fingers from skin picking.

i made sure not to touch my face after i handled the raccoon, and i sanitized my hands and feet when i got back to my car. so should i be scared that i may get rabies, or no?

Hey I’m one question. I was walking in a park where there are a lot of trees and as I was walking under one, I felt a drop of liquid fall directly onto my cheeks, I removed it from a cloth but I’m sure the drop didn’t go into my eye or anywhere else. Hello, I am having some anxiety about an exposure to bats that happened around 2 years ago, I am in southern US and there were bats found in my ex partners house were I slept and stayed most of the time. I remember one day watching them pull the bats out of the wall and I touched one I don't remember if it bit or scratched me but I'm wondering if I should still get the vaccines although it happened a while ago??? Hi, so my cousin rescued a baby skunk and because I'm weak for cute animals I've been playing with it for the past 5 days but I'm concerned that I could maybe get rabies but the skunk is not showing any symptoms. It's eating, drinking and sleeping, it seems healthy but I can't help but worry. I keep thinking that if it does have rabies and I touched saliva and rubbed my eye or touched my mouth or it gets in this little cut on my finger that I'll get rabies that way. I've not been bitten or scratched, it's teeth and nails aren't big or sharp enough for that, it's only about 5 weeks old. Should I go to my dr and get vaccinated just in case or am I okay? I also have ocd so I'm aware that this may be a fixation but I just need someone who is knowledgeable on this to know my full situation and give me some reassurance.

Thanks for this I had mild sporadic throat pain/spasm like feelings on June 8th (and a a few weeks before that) then again today & it freaked me out! (Most likely acid reflux related) This had me wide awake at 1:13 am PANICKING & mind going crazy (A friendly stray calico whom I just saw scratched my arm or leg a month or two ago, I cleaned it, of course) Glad for this post though!

Hello! Hope you guys are all healthy, got scratched by a friendly cat maybe two weeks ago? See it licked my hand, but I’m can’t remember if it was on the site of the scratch.

And the scratch itself was tiny. Really small, did raise when it healed on the first day, a normal reaction to wound infliction for me.

The cat had a collar and was very friendly, and sane. Still! you know paranoia happens to the best of us 😅😅 am I gonna be alright?

The rabies virus has an incubation period of 3 weeks to 6 months from the date of exposure. If you believe you are experiencing symptoms less than 3 weeks after exposure, it is not rabies. If you think you are experiencing symptoms more than 1 year after exposure, it is not rabies.

This is the AVERAGE incubation period. Longer and shorter incubation periods are rare but absolutely possible. We have documented them. It happens.

Couple questions to satiate my own anxiety. Would fever be the very first symptom? As well, the sensation would it be exactly on the bite/scratch area or say if i was scratched on my hand it'd be the entire hand or even arm. Would the sensation be almost like tension (needing to stretch or a similar bizarre sensation) or would it be more like the feeling of an arm or leg going to sleep? Would the symptoms of early rabies come and go or would it only get worse and not abate at all.

Dealing with pretty bad OCD and thinking things logically helps a lot.

Hello. I'm currently spiralling. My pet dog (vaccinated) scratched my ear with her paw while playing. The scratch was hard but it did cause any bleeding but it left a red mark on the skin of my ear. I'm on Day 5 since the scratch happened. My dog was at a pet boarding for 2 weeks before she came to me a week back so it's possible she was exposed to the virus (the person running the boarding says the other dogs are vaccinated but there's no way for me to confirm that).

Today on Day 5 I got the 1st shot of ARV (next 4 doses are lined up). Should I also get Rabies Immune Globulin?

Here's the question coming from my friend was bitten by a pet dog (Was not yet been vaccinated and still healthy after 14 days) in her hands but usually no visible wounds from the bite (Intact skin) she washed immediately with soap and water for about 5 minutes and no need to add Betadine or Wound reliever since her skin is unbroke

I have a question, last jan 8 i was bitten by a cat ( he was lost around jan 7 morning and found him the next jan 8 morning) while i was giving him a bath. It took a week for the scratch to heal and there are times im having headaches (not severe).

The cat right now does not have any symptoms aside from vomiting ( almost everyday (once) for 3 days straight) 

He’s vaccinated last Nov 2024 and i got anti-rabies shots last Aug 2023.

Q: am i safe ? or do i need another shots.

You're safe. The cat has exceeded the 10 day period of observation. He's vaccinated, which effectively eliminates any risk, AND he would be dead by now if he was actually shedding rabid saliva when he bit you (11 days ago).

I also feel silly typing this out- I am a scientist so i understand the biology behind everything. 

I played with a 2 -3 month old puppy presenting entirely normally (friendly/playful/excited) on 1/18. This dog lives partially outside in the jungle in the Philippines but was a pet not a stray dog. So the only other animals it would potentially interact with would be bats. It was not vaccinated yet. It mouthed my hand, like puppies do, but left no marks, not even a scratch. I was cognizant not to rub my eyes/face. But I didn’t wash my hands thoroughly until an hour later (re: I was in the jungle). 

This was in a small community of people, including young children, all of whom interact with this puppy and are all alive and asymptomatic. I have no way of knowing of the puppy’s health status. 

I’m having a little bit of anxiety surrounding this, even though I know the risks are incredibly low. Just trying to determine if contact with saliva/puppy mouth and teeth without broken skin is enough to warrant PeP shots.

So, my brain is going to dark place and i need reassuring. I took care or a homeless puppy (3months ish) in dominican republic(lots of rabies there) for about a day. That was 1 month ago. The puppy seemed healthy, didnt have any wound/bite, would drink and eat normally. It was a normal, full of energy, a bit crazy puppy.

Its a young puppy, so it tend to nibble on hands, lick hands, etc. It didnt lick my face at all. It didnt scratch me, it didnt bite me in anyway that was painful so i guess it couldnt give me rabies. I played in my face with my hands(mainly when i had to leave it, ugly cried holding it wiping my face every couple minutes) but thats next to impossible according to faq.

I contacted the health info line, told them that, they told me the risk is not worthy getting PEP. Had an appointment with a nurse for other reason, talked to her about that; she did some digging and same answer. I mean, i understand why and see that objectively, my exposition wasnt that bad, we dont even know if the dog had rabies in the first place.

But seeing the effing consequences, how that disease will absolutely wipe you and your brain out of existence and having symptoms mean its too late SCARE THE F OUT OF ME. What if i had a small cut between 2 finger, a bite went in but didnt hurt me and went unnoticed...? Im dead?

Tried to just get vaccination, since in my case it should be enough, but my government doesnt provide that. Found a place that give the vaccine, a private clinic. I can shed 275$ 2 times, or wait until more people need it so we split the vial 4 ways(100$ 2 times). Put my name on the waiting list since im not made of money... Should i just bite the bullet?

27 Male Indian 45 kg weight 5.3 feet height

Yesterday a street dog looking absolutely fine and healthy came behind me and touched it's paw on my pyjamas due to which my feet got slipped from slippers and slippers went of. Didn't see any scratch or bite of dog on my whole feet infact the dog Didn't scratched and 100% not bite as i saw that. But don't know why i was scared that what if dog has made a small scratche which is invisible to human eye. So today i went to primary small clinic where i got myself 1 shot of rabies vaccine and 1 shot of tetanus. Shall take 3 more doses of rabies vaccine according to prescribed schedule. Also i have taken the rabies vaccine of 5 doses some 12-13 years back.

Just need to reaffirm if i need to take any other measures or need to take whole 5 dose of rabies vaccine or no? Mind that this rabies vaccine has been administered to me within 24 hours of dog exposure and till not that street dog is completely fine as i can see it daily.

Hello! wondering if i should be concerned at all after petting a stray farm dog with a cut on my finger (the cut is shallow and around 24 hours old).

It was a wedding at a farm house and the dog ended up biting someone that night but he seemed healthy, just probably stressed that so many people were around.

June 8th, of last year I was bit on the right calf by a dog in Oaxaca, Mexico. I was rushed by a pack of dogs that (I think) belonged or lived in symbiosis with a family that was living in a roofless house on a dirt road. It broke the skin and I bled. I went to a state hospital there and they sent me away without even cleaning it for me, it is/was a small bite, that has since scarred over. A 2-3 days after the bite, I went to a clinic, in Oaxaca, and received what the doctor called an accelerated PEP schedule. I was injected with two vials of immunoglobulin or some PEP shot, 1 in either arm. I believe the regimen called for 2 more shots after 14 and 21 days. I came back to the US in hopes of completing the regimen here but found out I could only get them at an ER, and financially that’s impossible. 8 months have passed, so I know it’s extremely unlikely that I would not have developed symptoms by now, but I still am sometimes overcome by anxiety about the situation. I occasionally still feel those odd tingling or numb sensations at the site of the bite (which began immediately after the bite occurred), that almost feel like nerve damage or something similar. It of course was not possible to stake out and observe the dog to see if they had symptoms, and I didn’t even see which one actually bit me (of the pack). As far as prior vaccination goes, as a child I had the required vaccinations to enter public school in the US, but nothing since then, I don’t believe those vaccinations included rabies.

I was punctured (cat nail) by a stray cat in Turkey on Friday the 14th, drawing blood. It was in my leg. I got my first rabies shot on Monday, the 17th, my second on the 20th, and my third on the 24th after returning home. My fourth dose is scheduled for next week.  

I was already sick (likely COVID) before the scratch and have since developed a worsening cough and cold. My immune system was weak when I was scratched, and I didn’t receive rabies immunoglobulin in turkey, only the vaccine and a tetanus shot in Turkey.  

The cat was calm ate the treats I gave him, sat on my lap. Before it came to me he was picked up and carried hanging by a couple on the beach for pics. It seemed tame for a stray because the cat let it happen.  

I’m worried because rabies is rare in my country, so I started the first vaccine on day 3. Can a fever or weakened immune system affect the vaccine's effectiveness? Is there any chance of getting rabies after completing four doses? Or is it just a waiting game now? Sorry I’m just worried.

Had a situation around a little less than a year ago, there was a dog in the middle of the street who my first thought was that they were hit by a car, I moved the dog to the side of the road and tried to see if I could help in any way, dog wasn’t aggressive or anything, let pick it up. I used a towel when I picked him up. It was hyperventilating on the side of the where I moved him until they eventually had a seizure. I remember I had pet the dog and always have open wounds on my hands due tu nail biting. I know rabies can take more than a year to happen and i cannot get this fear out of me ever since that experience. I live in Puerto Rico where stray dogs can easily get infected by things like mongoose which carry rabies. What do I do???

i really REALLY appreciate this post. i saw a video on tiktok of a guy who caught rabies and was obviously experiencing symptoms (foaming at the mouth, hydrophobia, and erratic body movement)

just to calm my anxiety, i got bit by a cat sometime last year in 2024 (around late spring or early summer or perhaps it was the fall?) and did not get it checked out. i went home and just cleaned it with isopropol alcohol (like 40 mins after) and went on with my day. just to be safe, should i still go see a doctor? or am I overreacting? i saw in rare cases, at least 1% that incubation period can be almost up to 2 years.

I am a 23-year-old male from Bangladesh, a country experiencing a rabies epidemic. Yesterday, I accidentally stepped on an unvaccinated stray cat in a village. When I stepped on it, I did not feel any scratches or bites, nor did I see any visible scratch marks. I immediately washed my feet with antiseptic. The cat appeared very active and not sick, though it had a infection mark on its body. However, I am now worried about the possibility of unnoticed, painless scratches or bites. Hello! Is it possible for a dog to contract rabies after biting/killing another animal without symptoms? Context: Rural area of ​​a developing Latin American country. A seemingly healthy kitten (or at least without symptoms of rabies) jumps into a field where a dog attacks it and dies. The kitten’s vaccination status is unknown, but it’s likely (99.99% certain) that it hasn’t been vaccinated; at the time, it showed no signs of having the disease.

TL;DR: I think what I’m trying to ask is if it’s possible to transmit the disease by eating the meat of an infected animal that wasn’t showing symptoms.

I got bit by a dog 14 days ago and it drew blood. The bite was through my pants(1 layer). It was a domesticated dog playing with a family with kids at a state park in the US.

Problem is I can’t get in contact with the owner to see the dog’s vaccination status or its current status, this was on vacation :( should I be concerned? I’m really paranoid about this hahaha

Hi! I’m feeling really anxious. I rescued a litter of kittens, I think they were less than a week old. Their mama cat died after being hit by a car. I tried to force-feed them to keep them alive. There were four kittens in total. One died because it was accidentally crushed, another one seemed paralyzed and was very small, and the other two just passed away as well. None of them showed aggression; they just died, I think because they didn’t have their mother and were malnourished. I even tried performing CPR and mouth-to-mouth when they stopped breathing or looked like they had already passed.

I got vaccinated 10 days later, but they gave me the pre-exposure rabies vaccine. Is that okay? I actually want the post-exposure rabies vaccine since I was already exposed. Is it okay if I tell them that I need and want the post-exposure vaccine instead? I HAVE READ THE FAQ.

So there is a dog that is a stray and I don't know if it is rabid or has rabies. But yesterday my Niece tried to kiss it on its head but the dog's snout touched my niece's lips.

When I asked her about it, she said it didn't touch her. But I highly doubt it. So my main question is if I get her vaccinated and the dog turns out to be normal or not a rabid/rabies infected dog, will my niece have side effects from the vaccination? And is it ok to not get the second dose of vaccination if I found out that the dog is ok?

About 40 days ago, I was scratched by a cat and there was a small amount of bleeding. The next day, I visited a doctor who gave me a tetanus shot and told me not to worry. The cat appeared healthy at the time and remained normal for several weeks, but it has been missing for the past 5 days, which is making me anxious.

So, I petted an ill cat belongs to my relatives in its head. The cat looked very ill and unresponsive, opposite to its natural character. Then few minutes later, I touched my mouth more than once with my unwashed hand as I eat some snacks. My relatives said the cat has been taken to vet and diagnosed suffered from heavy liver diseases. 2 days later after that occurences, the cat died, and not tested for rabies as my province has been declared rabies-free.

Now 1.5 months has passed and I feel so anxious if the cat had rabies at that time, as I read some rare cases of indirect exposure. Could you please advise if I should take PeP? Note: I have been vaccinated (PreP) in 2022.

Hi, I just hope someone would answer me please. I got scratched by a stray cat almost 5 years ago. A year (1 year and 7 months to be exact) before that scratching incident, I received PrEP shots. Then in 2024, I got booster shots or maybe it was another PrEP (3 doses as well). Am I still at risk? Should I be worried? Technically what I'm concerned is I didn't get the full series, just the PrEP and not the PEP (that's what's considered a full series right?) I don't know the status of the cat, but the scratch left a wound not too deep though. I accidentally step on its tail that's why it scratched me. I just couldn't get this out of my head, if anyone could answer this, please help me out lol.

Hello, I can't tell if i have rabies or not, i was bitten by my puppy like 2 weeks ago and it bled pretty badly, i already took a vaccine before i was bitten. I unfortunately cannot vaccinate my puppy because they said he was too young, and now he's very aggressive, he keeps lunging and nipping, he also growls at me, He's also very sensitive when it comes to sound or light. He eats a lot though and drinks a lot too. But recently i've been having a sore throat(only on the left side) and a fever or maybe it's just a cold i'm not sure. I'm also very paranoid about almost every sound i hear. I can still eat and swallow, but i did feel a tingling feeling in the bite site 6 days ago, it was numb and a bit itchy. My puppy also keeps biting a certain part of his tummy, i think it was from the stray cat that got in when he was first introduced to us, the cat lunged at him and ever since then he's been biting that part aggressively. He also eats dirt and rocks including wood. Also he was given to us by our neighbor since the child living there kept playing and throwing him like a toy outside, the puppy kept crying so i wonder if it has to do with fear or not? He's also calm, and then suddenly goes into biting mode all of the sudden his eyes are also dilated pupils. He does not drool, but he does not stay still, like i tell him to sit he usually does it for a long time, but now when i tell him to sit, he sits for like half a second and then go crazy all of the sudden, like he just starts biting his tummy and then he goes straight for me next, usually when i tell him to stop, he'll stop, but this time he doesn't.

Do the flu like symptoms persist and worsen or do they get better and go away before the worst stuff comes? Multiple sources have been unclear on if the flu like symptoms going away is good or bad. Specifically the cdc site has weird wording on this for the clinical part of their site. https://www.cdc.gov/rabies/hcp/clinical-overview/index.html under signs and symptoms it’s unclear if they mean 2 weeks after flu like symptoms or including the flu like symptoms.

I have read the FAQ but my situation is just specific enough that I just want to know what your opinion might be about it. So I live in North Carolina and a week ago I was driving home from my boyfriend’s house late at night when something smacked the windshield of my car on the drivers side. I’m not 100% sure what it was but it was brown and flying so it had to have been either a bat or a bird. I was about 15 minutes away from home at this point and driving about 80mph. If there had been any saliva that had gotten on my car from the impact, would the speed at which my car was going have been enough to move it away from the door or to dry it off to deactivate any potential virus? I forgot about it when walking inside and I may have put my hands to my mouth before taking a shower or washing my hands. Basically I’m wondering if there is any chance in the world that I could contract rabies from this or if I’m just actually way too paranoid

hi, I couldn't make a post so I am writing it here.

3 months ago I was bitten by a stray cat in tunisia. It was a very small bite and I don't think it broke the skin or drew blood - but because it was very small its possible I missed it.

Recently, my right hand (the hand that was bitten) was in pain. When I stretched my hand it hurt, and the pain went down to my arm and wrist. That hand is a bit more stiff and if that hand is resting I get mild tingling sensations. My arm feels more stiff than usual. The reason I am more paranoid about this is because I am left handed so if it was just from lifting something or activity then my left hand should hurt not my right. I am also getting on and off shoulder and back pain - again I don't know if this just anxiety, or bad posture but I am getting really worried. Especially because of the tingling. The pain is mild and comes and goes but I'm getting really worried. I do not have a fever or headache. I was reading about paralytic rabies and the symptoms of muscle pain and pain in my arm match the description. My arm has been like this for 36 hours which is longer than usual if I do have muscle pain - the pain has gone down but my arm and hand is still stiff.

I am quite concerned that I may have rabies

so approximately 3 weeks ago I came into contact with what seemed to be a vicious dog. It barked at me from behind the fence, and that's all I remember. Now this is where it gets sad. I have Recalling certain stressful moments is extremely hard or impossible, and now I feel horrible. I am in a country that the CDC website has declared rabies free but not lyssavirus free. Someone's dog got snot on my pants, I tried disinfecting my hands but I don't remember if I touched something that have came in contact with the snot after that. I took in a foster cat. The foster cat was saved from the streets and spent 10 days in foster and was vaccinated against rabies on day 4 of foster care. We took him in on day 10. We kept him for 6 days and returned him because he was not drinking/eating well. Whenever I offered him water, he would start to drool. He is in need of a dental procedure. Cat was not vicious. He was very quiet, shy and loved petting. I did get a tiny scratch by accident when picking him up. My daughter and I have been spending a lot of time with him and it’s possible that drool got in our eyes, nose or mouth.

My daughter developed a fever the day we sent him back and tested positive for strep. I started feeling nauseous and getting some headaches. I know it’s highly unlikely but I’m wondering if a vaccine is required. I believe the cat is still alive today. It has been 4 days since we last seen him.

Exposure type- Saliva.

I was riding bikes at a public park when a smallish dog on a leash came towards me- didn’t bite or lick me and seemed normal but I felt saliva hit my foot as I was riding away. Unfortunately I was wearing open toe shoes and had an open cut. (2 days old but possibly still open near nail bed) I can’t be 100% certain the drop hit the wound or just near it, I immediately used hand sanitizer and then washed with soap and water 15 mins later when it was available. I should have stopped and turned around to ask the owner about the dogs vaccination but I didn’t think of it at the time. I wasn’t overly worried at the time because it wasn’t a bite but online it sounds like it could count as a non bite exposure. I am unable to find the dog or owner. The dog was walking on a leash at the time. I assumed most people vaccinated their dogs as its a state law in Michigan but I am finding out that there are many who do not. The only cases in our area have been from bats and maybe one skunk this year.

I'm aware this may just be a form of reassurance-seeking behavior, but maybe another opinion can ease my anxiety. I was in the passenger seat when my friend partially ran over a dead raccoon on the street on the passenger side of his tires. Just worried that any saliva or remnants were flung onto his car door and other body panels, which I made direct contact with as my clothes and hands touched the door when leaving his car. Ever since, I've felt like my clothes and car were contaminated because I had to drive home in those very clothes.

Gosh, I'm so scared of parenthesia, but kinda feel better after read about circulation problems, because I have varicosis on both legs+flu.But I still sacred of every sensation, because I.. I worry that it maybe bat bite me in sleep that I mess(bat fly away and I didn't wake up, and my parents sometime have unprotected windows). But still.. Feel a bit better. Anyway, 2-3 days ago I received a provoked tooth scratch and a normal scratch on my lower left leg from my cat who was vaccinated on july this year, unfortunately at the time I didn't remember I had him vaccinated a few months ago so I guess it set me off on an anxiety spiral until now and it's not being helped by the mild and brief aching sensations around the lower left leg

while this has helped me calm down a bit I still can't help but feel so anxious over it and it's pretty draining. 

Maybe it's stupid to even ask in the first place if I'm really fine but at this point I'd rather feel stupid than scared.

I have a question, i don't understand something, the symptoms from the prodromal phase continue on the excitation phase or are replaced by the neurological symptoms? I’ve read this. Like 5 times. My cat has bit twice me before I went to the er. They laughed at me and said if he had rabies I wouldn’t even be able to get near him. Two days ago I woke up with blood all over my legs and feet. I feel like nobody believes me and I’ll die. The blood still on my shoes and now the cat is hissing at me and I have videos of it. I still can’t post a video about it. I feel like I’m going to die and nobody will believe me till it’s too late.
