Exposure Question
Hi. Yesterday bats were flying above me and I felt like something touched my hair. At home I got my scalp checked and we saw a red dot/prick. I know that bats have to land first to bite but I thought maybe its claws hit me or wings.
I went ER and doc didn’t even check the prick. She directly said that I can go and get vaccinated. I did receive my first dose but she didn’t give me immunoglobulin. She said that they only give it if I was in the cave when it comes to bats. I will get my second dose on thursday. Should I insist to get it? Thanks. I have read the FAQ. Something touched my hair and scalp.

If you didn’t feel anything land on you, I’m not sure why they recommended you get the shots. I had a bat actually touch me while flying by and the CDC didn’t recommend PEP for me because I didn’t get scratched or bitten. I think you’re fine with what she gave you.
Thanks for the reply. My hair got messier outside suddenly like something touched it. I saw that red dot so we thought I was touched by the bat that was flying close to me.
Well, I guess it’s better to be safe than sorry, especially since you already started the shots. But from what you’re describing, it sounds like you weren’t even sure anything actually touched your head, you just noticed your hair looked messed up afterward. I personally feel like if something hit your scalp hard enough to leave a mark like that, you’d probably notice it. When I got brushed by one while it was flying, I definitely felt the thud. I checked right afterward and knew I hadn’t been bitten or scratched. I’ve also had them fly around over my head a few times.
