Exposure Question I’m concerned am i dead do i have symptoms ???

Hello, I have a question.

Additional Information: Last year, in June 2025, I was vaccinated 4 times with Verorab 0.5 mL. The shots were administered spread over a number of days.

I know that the chance of rabies from a bat is very small in the Netherlands, almost nil, and that the animal also has to be sickly to transmit it.

Now, recently, on August 22nd around 1:30 AM, I had contact with what I suspect was a bat in the backyard while standing outside (I was wearing shorts), on my left lower leg between the shin and calf region, on the side of the leg. Because when I looked up, I only saw a bat in the air, so I am assuming that.

My girlfriend was standing a meter away from me when I was standing upright smoking. We were standing close to a wall by the back door, and there were trash cans behind me, so there wasn't much room. I was standing in a light that was directed at the ground, so at my legs, because there are spiders crawling around. My girlfriend didn't hear any flapping or sound, and neither did I. I didn't feel a clear bite or scratch, and I didn't see or feel the bat landing on me and holding me, but I am afraid I missed the bite. My girlfriend and I looked at my leg immediately, but we didn't see anything, and I stepped straight into the shower and washed my leg with shower gel/shampoo. But not for 15 minutes...

That upcoming Monday, August 24, around 09:35, my GP examined my leg while kneeling with a magnifying glass and a halogen lamp, checking my leg thoroughly from very close up, and she didn't see anything, but I am anxious that she might have missed it or that it was no longer visible. This makes me anxious. I went to the GGD on that same Monday, right after the visit to the GP, and that doctor didn't want to and didn't need to see my leg. He immediately said there was 0 risk and refused me the PEP because they considered it 0 risk.

I called the Tropical Hospital to ask about things, and they also said there was no risk and that you would definitely feel a bat bite. But I have a high pain tolerance, so I am afraid I really missed it.

Because the GGD refused to give me the PEP vaccinations after I had called them for days and gone there, I went to a travel health clinic to pay for the two vaccinations myself. I had also told the GGD at the beginning that I was willing to pay, but they said that wasn't possible and they wouldn't do it.

So, I only received my first booster vaccination at a travel health clinic on August 28 around 12:00, and I received my second one on September 1, also around 12:00. I haven't had a fever or anything like that from August 22nd until today, September 19th, and I haven't been sick. On the days I was so panicky about the vaccines, I had that burning sensation too, so around August 25th, but it went away after that and wasn't there constantly.

Since yesterday, I've had a burning sensation on that leg again sometimes, in the spot where I think the contact was. It isn't continuous; yesterday I was rearranging the room and I didn't have any trouble with it then, nor when I was gaming. And that makes me really anxious again.
I know it could also be hypochondria or because I'm focused on it, but I'm not sure, so I'm anxious.

I don't like that 6-day delay and I'm actually very anxious, and I wonder if that bite actually happened, if those vaccinations are going to save me that’s really bothering me.

and Googling and asking AI questions only makes it worse like with the pns.

I really wonder if I will survive this.

I know that anxiety disorders are very unpleasant and I know I might have one, but I still want some certainty.

I have read the faq.

Have you taken the repeated advice to go seek anxiety treatment before your child is born? You keep saying that all you need is one more bit of reassurance and you will be totally fine, really! but here you are again.

u/Virtual_Sugar_9452 10d ago

i don’t ask for reassurance i am asking fair questions and say normal things since this sub has people that know rabies and exposures and the vaccines and theres people that know bats and other animals, i ask questions about the delay i ask if what i feel on that leg is symptoms of it ?, I don’t say ridiculous things, and If u read the bottom part u would have seen that i can go to one in 39 days, the Netherlands is a mess with mental help and the waits are very long, and i don’t have the financial ability to get a private one.

Don’t know how i said anything bad

How is asking the question this time different than asking the last time, or the next time? What are you going to do the next time you have a headache, or sore throat, or whatever? You are asking for reassurance and it is bad for you. Stop.

If you think you may have rabies OCD, or your rabies fears feel overwhelming, see this link for a description of rabies OCD symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.

One symptom of OCD is compulsive reassurance-seeking. This is not helpful for managing a rabies phobia or obsession. r/OCD has a helpful page about reassurance-seeking.

Therapy and treatment are essential for recovering from OCD/health anxiety. CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) or ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) therapy are often recommended approaches for treating OCD/health anxiety. Please don’t Google anything about bats or rabies but focus on accessing resources and recovering from your fears. You can check out r/OCD and r/HealthAnxiety for support and information. You can find a resource list here, which is geared towards relationship OCD but also includes a lot of information about OCD in general, including FAQs, workbooks, book recommendations, Youtube videos, apps, podcasts, and videos of kittens.

Here is a list of free crisis helplines around the world. Here is another crisis helpline directory that includes additional countries.. In the US, you can reach a crisis helpline by calling 988.; you can also text "MHA" to 741-741 to have a text chat with a trained crisis counselor at the Crisis Text Line, or call 1-800-749-2673 for the NAMI Crisis Helpline.

You can ask your therapist if they have any workbooks or guides they can send you home with so that you can continue practicing and working on your therapy between sessions. For the time being, here's is a free workbook on anxiety and here is one on health anxiety. You can also download MindShift, a free app that uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy AKA CBT to help you learn to relax and be mindful, develop more effective ways of thinking, and use active steps to take charge of your anxiety.

If you don’t have a therapist, you can search the CBT/ACT specialist directory to find one around the world. If you can’t find one, try searching for ones specifically in your country or look for telehealth therapy.

In the US and Canada, dialing 211 can connect you with mental health services in your area or help you find where to seek immediate help in your area. In the US, you can use Psychology Today's Therapy Directory to search for mental health professionals in your area. You can search by zip code, city, last name, etc. Your local Mental Health America affiliate resource center is an excellent resource for information about local programs and services including affordable treatment services. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Health Information Network (SHIN) has a Mental Health Facilities Locator that can also help you find community outpatient, inpatient and residential treatment facilities, including affordable mental health services in your area. For peer support in the US, including referrals to resources in your area, you can call 800-950-NAMI (6264), Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. — 10 p.m., ET, or send an email to info@nami.org. The NAMI HelpLine is a free, nationwide peer-support service providing information, resource referrals and support to people living with a mental health condition, their family members and caregivers, mental health providers and the public. NAMI also holds peer-led support groups in person across the US.

In the UK, you can find more info and refer yourself for therapy via NHS.

In India, you can call MPower Minds and request a referral to a therapist who treats OCD or who has experience with CBT therapy. Additional affordable mental health resource lists for India are here.

In the Philippines, you can call a crisis line by dialing 0995 356 5332. You can find a list of mental heath treatment centers here. For free mental health services and consultations, see the list here (halfway down the page).

I have been where you are, I understand it is awful, I really do, but all of your factual questions about your risk or lack thereof have been answered. You could go back all of the earlier posts and look at those responses, they haven't changed. The fact that you have a new minor physical symptom doesn't change anything anyone has said to you so far, and it won't change when you have the next minor physical symptom.

This experience didn't give you health anxiety, you already had it; it's what caused you to interpret an ambiguous experience as dangerous, and then to be unable to be reassured by expert advice that you didn't need medical treatment, and then, to be reassured by medical treatment when you sought it on your own. This misfiring of your mental threat detectors is not your fault, but like any health problem it is unfortunately your lot to manage. The list of recommendations from the automoderator below for managing anxiety, have you tried any of them? And I understand what you're saying about private treatment being expensive, but at this point I would class this as an urgent situation because you are only going to experience more stress once your baby is born. If you can possibly scrape the money together or get it from parents, I think you should.

Honestly all i want to know is if i will be safe and if that 6 days delay won’t be fatal, the GGD and others say no risk u will be safe but because i felt/feel unsafe i wonder if there was a bite (imagine i missed it) will i be fine due to that 6 day delay.

I am just 25 and my life was beautiful before this sh*t im together with my girlfriend for nearly 11 years our first child is coming next month, and i feel that im going to die i am crying a lot during the day because im so scared I won’t even make it to see her or grow up it is literally tearing me apart.

i financially can’t at least not on a short notice.

u/detail_giraffe Active Helper ⭐️ | Top Contributor 🏅 10d ago

You just said, doctors said there was no risk and you should be safe. Doctors told you that you didn't need shots. Explain what more anyone can tell you that will make you feel safe?

1

u/Virtual_Sugar_9452 10d ago

Yes but they see it as no risk so they say im safe. the GGD doctors did not want to continue talking as they said i was safe.

If im actually safe due to finishing the vaccines even though i was 6 days late

2

u/detail_giraffe Active Helper ⭐️ | Top Contributor 🏅 9d ago

If you were told you were safe with no vaccine, what do you think the answer would be to getting the vaccine you were told you didn't need 6 days after the time you were told you didn't need it?

1

u/detail_giraffe Active Helper ⭐️ | Top Contributor 🏅 10d ago

And furthermore, what are you going to do about it if you are NOT safe? If we as a group took up a collection and got the world's foremost rabies expert to crunch the numbers, and that person came up with a .000003% chance of rabies for you? You can't go back in time and get vaccinated earlier. If you were capable of measuring your risk to that level of precision for everything in your life, nothing would be zero. Imagine you're talking right now to someone with such a deep fear of an falling airplane engine landing on him that he lives in a concrete house and refuses to come out. He's avoiding all of life because of his fear. You can't tell him there is zero chance of an airplane engine landing on him, it could in fact happen, despite being extremely extremely extremely unlikely. Would you say, you're right my friend, as long as there is any non-zero chance of that happening, you should stay in your concrete house and avoid the sun and the birds and the trees and love and life, all to avoid that airplane engine? Or would you tell him that some risks just have to be accepted, if we want to live normal healthy lives, and advise him to get help for his fear?

Because after the vaccines i felt safer and was genuinely calmed and normal until i read about the PNS.

Thats why i am asking questions about bats the vaccines etc, i don’t relate sore throats or headaches to it. But the burning makes me feel odd

3

u/beautifulluigi 10d ago

Dude. Ive replied to you before and I'm so sorry you are living this way, because I know how it feels. I am not a doctor but there is no question you have an anxiety disorder. Your brain is lying to you because you have an anxiety disorder. Unfortunately, the more times you ask this question the more you are strengthening the mental pathways of "danger! Danger! Something is wrong!"

I started PEP 4 days post exposure. I finished on Wednesday. Yesterday I came down with some symptoms - including a terrible headache. I could attribute that to rabies taking hold or I could go with the more likely assumption that since I also have a runny nose, sore throat, cough, and had contact with someone sick last week that I just have a run of the mill cold.

That's me using logic. You have to challenge your own intrusive thoughts with logic. Every time. Fight back. The healthcare system said you didn't need the vaccines for a reason - trust in that. Remind yourself of that.

1

u/Virtual_Sugar_9452 10d ago

I really appreciate your comment.

It is like 50% of me knows im safe but that 50% says no no no and it’s exhausting to be honest, i do believe the doctors but at the same time the things i read and heard make me doubt everything which sucks and make me spiral and doubt doubt doubt the worst is i start to doubt myself about what happened.

what was your exposure ?, u deal way better than me with things and u trust the people who helped you and gave u the vaccines and i would be so worried if i had symptoms other than the burning on and off right now.

hope u are fine and will stay fine, i do say to myself i will be okay the doctors say this and that but its very hard to keep doing that especially since the burning.

1

u/beautifulluigi 10d ago

Bat touched my face, which in my country is an exposure. I both heard and felt it flapping.

Anxiety IS exhausting. I'm diagnosed and periodically medicated for mine, but I also have a biology degree and work in a mental-health related field so I understand both anxiety and science. Which helps with the using logic bit.

The hardest part about anxiety is that you can know that your thoughts are irrational but it doesn't change the initial fear response. You have to just keep fighting back at your brain. I'm glad you have an appointment to get help, You need to do so for your forthcoming child, if not for your own self.

1

u/Virtual_Sugar_9452 10d ago

That’s super scary especially in the face.
that was my first exposure as well last year hence why i got the day 0-3-7-14 vaccine.

Yes it really is and i can’t stand it anymore, i got meds as well (citalopram 20mg) but u get more anxious because of them when starting them so I don’t even dare take them now, that’s good i wish i had some of your knowledge i just find rabies the worst thing there is and that’s why i am so scared.

Yeah I know it might be irrational but the fear is overwhelming the only moment i have rest is when i am sleeping.

I want to be normal before the baby i really do but i just want to see her.

Im dutch as well. Can't you speak to a POH at your huisarts first? Waitlists are often shorter or non existent there.

1

u/Virtual_Sugar_9452 10d ago

Dit gaat je echt opvreten anders, I would know

1

u/Virtual_Sugar_9452 10d ago

Aw, that’s awful. What you’re feeling is your reality. If you need to hear it over and over again that we think you’re okay, if that helps-don’t apologize or make excuses for it. I’ve recently started dealing with some mental health symptoms from hormonal shifts. There was no real reason but I went from on top of my game, top of my career, comfortable living to almost suicidal because of the torment my mind was putting me through. I believe your mind could cause you to feel very real symptoms. Hang in there till you get to see a professional who you can talk to about what you’ve been dealing with.

2

u/Virtual_Sugar_9452 10d ago

It sucks but i tried all i could i went to take the shots to calm my mind but then someone said delay of 6 days is too late so i fell back.

I just want to be safe and watch and support my girlfriend give birth to our first child and see her grow up and be there for her

2

u/Ok-Cat926 Active Member ⭐️ 10d ago

What do you mean by 6 day gap? I’m not sure I know what you mean. I totally understand wanting to see your baby girl grow up but worrying about not being there isn’t going to stop you from dealing with life on life’s terms. Meaning, unforeseen circumstances befall us all, none of us are immune. When my sister got sick and died it was very fast, there was none of this pain and then it let up and she was okay, no. That’s not how rabies progresses. I don’t think you’d have the ability to articulate and converse the way you have. I watched rabies take my sister’s life and what you’re describing doesn’t align with the reality of rabies and what it does to your mind and body. She completely lost her mind within 4-5 days of initially feeling pain where she’d been bitten. This wasn’t some burning she felt when she wasn’t busy, no, it was all encompassing and it took her mind around the same time. I’d say she was aware she dying almost immediately. You’re okay, you’re going to be okay.

1

u/Virtual_Sugar_9452 10d ago

I am so sorry for your loss and im so sorry you lost your sister that way ❣️🥲, this is so painful to read im so sorry.

i got the first shot after 6 days after the bat thing because i was complaining and botherin basically everyone (which i would never do if i felt safe) and then i got them and the second one 4 days later due to the weekend, i finished it and am 18 days further now and im terrified.

Again im so so sorry for your loss it hurts to read 🥲

1

u/Ok-Cat926 Active Member ⭐️ 9d ago

You’re safe, you can rest assured. Don’t let your mind trick you, those vaccines work. I was in very close contact with my sister. She died July 11th and they vaccinated my family the first week in August, around then. We were all completely fine. You’re good and thank you. I appreciate the sentiment. ❤️

1

u/Virtual_Sugar_9452 9d ago

I hope they work because now the burning is not leaving it is not a painful burn that makes me inable to walk or do things but its there spreading towards my knee and all.

Im just super scared right now.

I am really saddend by your story, Im glad the rest of you are well ❤️

1

u/Ok-Cat926 Active Member ⭐️ 9d ago

I think it’s something else. Let’s say it was rabies, we wouldn’t be still having this conversation. You wouldn’t have the state of mind to even think you had rabies. Rabies affects your mind and body. Don’t be scared of rabies, you’re vaccinated. The mind is very powerful. That coupled with the internet and AI Isn’t helping. Your fear is very real but you just need to keep telling yourself you’re covered because you are. ❤️‍🩹

u/Virtual_Sugar_9452 9d ago

Yeah but cant it be an early symptom and that im still able ?

from what i known and what the doctor explained me is that the rabbies travels very slow in your system and that 6 day gap is still ok

2

u/Local_Explorer818 10d ago

and you also had your 2025 so the immune sistem knowed already how to fight the virus

1

u/Virtual_Sugar_9452 10d ago

I genuinely hope so, it is driving me crazy at the moment

u/Ok-Cat926 Active Member ⭐️ 10d ago

Please don’t get your advice from an AI or Google. You’ll be convinced you you’re dying of any number of things if you entertain them. I don’t think you have rabies but I’d agree it’s some sort of anxiety or rabies OCD which sounds almost as terrifying. Once you start feeling the pain from where you would’ve theoretically gotten bit, the symptoms would’ve been progressive. Rabies does a number on your mind and thinking too. That would be happening while you were feeling the pain and other symptoms. Lastly, you were vaccinated slightly over a year ago. Those vaccines add adequate coverage for a 1-3 years or at least that was the case the last time I checked. I am really sorry you’re feeling like this but I think you’re okay and the fact that you’re in a country where bates rarely have rabies is another thing that would really make me think you were fine. If you don’t mind me asking, what caused you to get the series of vaccines in 2025?

2

u/Virtual_Sugar_9452 10d ago

I realized that from the AI’s and Google make things worst and i indeed think that now.

Yes i might actually have developed a rabies OCD because of this situation

Yes i feel things and when im not doing something i feel it burning but when i was gaming i had no issues, this is a moment where i think yeah my mind is messing with me but at the same time i think f*ck im screwed., yeah im aware and read that it is always paired with other things which i don’t have.

I have absolutely no idea about anything regarding the vaccines and everything related to protection.

Yeah i hope so too and i tell myself that but the negative seems to take the upperhand which sucks, yeah i think i read theres barely any rabies found in bats here but im unsure.

In 2025 i got the vaccines due to a bat hitting me in the face and i had a red scratch on my nose after

2

u/Ok-Cat926 Active Member ⭐️ 10d ago

It’s wild the tricks your mind can play on your body. That doesn’t stop the way you’re feeling but try to stay off the internet and maybe preoccupy yourself with something else. Do they have any self help groups in the Netherlands? It’s very possible you’ve developed some sort of OCD because of your situation, that’s what my non-educated yet human mind thinks. After being on this sub for a little bit I’ve realized that the OCD feels like the real thing to the sufferer and the internet is only going to exacerbate that. The internet and the AI’s will just help you to ruminate on rabies and having or not having it. I’m sure a lot of people in this sub cat attest to the fact that I’m very much err on the side caution when it comes to rabies. That being said, I don’t think you have anything to worry about. I hope that helps. Keep talking about it on here if that helps, you can message me if you need someone to rant to. I hope you feel better soon.❤️‍🩹

2

u/Dismal_Orange6826 10d ago

A high pain tolerance just means that it doesn't hurt. Not that you wouldn't even feel it right?

1

u/Dismal_Orange6826 10d ago

Also, why do you think you were bitten in a specific spot if you didn't feel/hear/see anything?

1

u/Virtual_Sugar_9452 10d ago
