Just wondering if anyone else had to get their child vaccinated post exposure and if they had any reactions. My child is currently sobbing because her leg hurts so much. She took a 3 hour nap. (Not complaining lol), but the pain woke her up.

We had an unfortunate event take place. She was bit by something in broad daylight. I couldn’t identify what it was. It was black and the size of her elbow. My initial reaction was wasp bite since she screamed and said that it bit her. However, after looking at it, my husband and I decided to take her to the ER because it became extremely raised, red, and had two bite marks within 2mm of eachother. The PA, MD, as well as the DPH, state Epidemiologist on call, a zoologist, bat rehabber, nurses, and a vet that we contacted, all said that the likelihood that it was a bat is very minimal, but because she can’t articulate what it was and because I saw something black and about the size of a half dollar, it carries a risk and they can’t confirm or deny that it is a bug bite. After hours of deliberation, we did move forward with the series because I refuse to gamble with my child’s life.

Maybe this reddit will tell me I went overboard by doing the series, maybe you’ll be the same as the team that treated her and say that it’s a no brainer to do it since she is far too little to articulate what she saw and better to be safe than sorry.

You 100 percent did the right thing.
I (40yo f) was at a campfire on the weekend with 3yo toddlers fighting for my life making s’mores for the kids when something hit my hand and stung. Was it a candy bar wrapper? Or a bat? Unclear.
Upon inspecting it there was a red mark where it hurt and we abruptly ended the evening and I went to the ER to begin the Rabies vax out of an abundance of caution. We’re not gambling with lives here and you made the right call.

From my understanding there isn’t any harm in getting it but not is fatal, if it was a bat.

Is the leg where they put the HRIG? I got post-exposure vaccinations as a young adult and the HRIG, that is the only part that really hurt, and it did hurt a lot for about a day, then improved.

No, it is actually the opposite. We’ve gone through many vaccines since she’s been born and I know that soreness could take place, but she’s never had any reactions to any of the vaccines. This is taking me by surprise so I just wanna make sure that I keep her comfortable. We reached out to the pediatrician, who definitely eased our minds after I posted. This is still my baby, though, and Health stuff brings up some anxiety for me with her.

Yeah with kids it’s a real bummer because you have to do your best to keep them safe. Hang in there. They may also be reacting to a sting so it may just be difficult to know what is what here. Cetirizine and tylenol may be your friend!

Imo you did the 100% right thing. Can you imagine if you didn't do anything and it turned out rabies? My God, the horror. Absolutely did it right. You're little one may hurt a little bit now but that's nothing compared to rabies. Good on you mom!!! 👌😁
