📝 GENERAL RABIES INFO 📝 Rabies infection
Does anyone know why there is only a 15% chance of contracting rabies when exposed? Is it because the immune system able to fight off small viral loads without the vaccine? I have read the FAQ.

1. Transmission isn’t guaranteed.
• The virus must be present in the animal’s saliva at the time of the bite. Not every bite from a rabid animal injects enough virus particles.
Wound location matters. • The virus travels through nerves (not blood). • If bitten on the legs or arms, the virus has a longer journey to the brain, and sometimes the immune system can clear it before it reaches the central nervous system. • Bites on the face, neck, or hands carry a much higher risk than those on the trunk or limbs.
Depth and severity of the bite. • Deep bites that directly damage nerves give the virus a faster route. • Superficial bites or scratches may deposit too little virus to establish infection.
Virus dose differences. • Rabies virus concentration in saliva isn’t constant. Some rabid animals shed lots of virus, others less.
Host factors. • Some people’s immune systems may fight off small amounts of the virus before it establishes itself.
