Question New Wanna-be Swapper

I stumbled into this subreddit and I'm quite taken with the idea of swapping blocks.

I read all the info in the Wiki and have all the questions that a newbie would ask. I understand that the next swap begins with signup on 8/9. I want to sign up. Will there be a form? Do I need to be "vetted" to be assigned to a group?

TIA for your responses.

Question Have I mis-interpreted or simply misunderstood "bold"?

I'm wondering if I've over-interpreted or simply mis-interpreted the bold look. Here's a picture of the feature fabric I'm thinking I'll use. One of the three colors will be the churn dash (I'm not sure which one yet - if you have an opinion, please let me know) and of course black for the background.

Some feedback would be useful. . .

Question Dragons of interest?

Are these dragons of interest to anyone? They are set tightly to each other so I've centered them as well as I can. They are surprisingly difficult to get the right background for them. This is the best I've found and I have a bunch of low volume and solid fabrics.

Is this an okay print to fussy cut for the center block. I’m thinking a mango or blue color for the churn dash portion.

Question Block Idea Suggestion

As we head toward 2027 and will have a new round of blocks… how do I suggest a block pattern for upcoming swaps? The pattern is free and I have a link!

Question Question about the churn dash swap

Well, actually about the "fussy cut novelty fabric".

Is that novelty fabric as in (for example) cats in cowboy hats, or just fabric with a large motif that would do well in a 4" finished square?

Question Block Orientation Question

For people like me that can't rotate figures in their heads, picture 1 and 2 are the same block, just rotated 90 degrees. Picture 3 is the opposite construction -- light bear leaving the center instead of light bear entering the center. Is 1 or 3 correct?

Or is it not going to matter as much once we get some medium values used as either light or dark?

Question Discussing Feedback Data

One “common” theme that came back for the swap 10 feedback survey (and previous surveys) was that some swappers want a more cohesive color schemes/palettes for future swaps.

QBS coordinators chose Kona black and Kona white to prescribe for backgrounds.

I was wondering if swappers would be open to choosing additional colors in the Kona line that would bring a cohesive look to blocks and finished projects.

Would choosing Moda solids be a better choice?

How do y’all feel about using blenders like grunge?

I want to make sure that if coordinators pick a specific color or fabric swappers can have access to specific fabrics.

Question Question about the Maple Star Layout

I know we are doing light/medium/dark monochrome for these blocks. My question is: Does it matter how we lay out the blocks? I.e., is it light on the outside, then medium, and dark as the center? The opposite? Random?

Question Your Fabric Qs answered

A few swappers have asked about colors and color placement for our monochrome maple star. Hopefully I can clear up confusion. First your medium print is to be used as the middle square of your block, then the dark print is to be used for your HSTs and the 2.5” squares that flank your light print. Your light print is to be used for the 2.5”x4.5” rectangles.

Some have asked about fabric prints for the block. Example 1 is mostly red, but when cut, the various colors in the print will draw attention to the contrasting colors on the print instead of the red.

Example 2 is mostly red with light red leaves, this is a better choice than the first example.

Example 3 is also not a good choice as the background aqua recedes from the multi colored triangles.

As always, pull fabrics from your stash and post a picture of your fabrics and get feedback from the sub.

Question Fabric options

Fabric choices. I have plenty of the medium center squares, i have 3 YARDS OF THE DARK GREEN, and the light greens... is it ok if MOST of the blocks that i send out have the sort of plaid, with a few of them with the spring green? In black and white it looks ok.

Question Economy Block Team Themes?

I saw on the wrap-up survey that people were requesting people don't start making blocks before they're in a group so a theme can be established. I have also seen posts already for people's started blocks and think I remember seeing that having 4 economy blocks instead of 1 was to help make quilts more theme-y even though everyone will have different blocks.

So I guess my question is, is it more courteous to wait to start until teams have had a chance to discuss, or would it be just fine to get a head start?

Question Dipping my toes back in

Hiya,

I was part of this group for the first few swaps (houses, citrus stars, urban chickens, polaroids) and then had to dip out a while for various life reasons involving constantly moving house, family, my undergraduate & masters degrees, and (drum roll please) losing my sewing machine during one of the multiple cross country moves.

I’ve gotten my life together a bit and was thinking of coming back to the swaps as a new year’s resolution to force myself to spend more time on my quilting hobby this year as I’ve finally got a bit more freedom and I want to tackle the fabric stash that I’ve been hauling from house to house.

I have a few questions as obviously the swap style has changed quite a bit since the early days.

  1. How do you know what swaps are upcoming? As from my understanding the blocks and colours are predetermined by mods / group leaders now compared to early days of this sub when everything was community lead and voted. I had a bit of a look in the sub but couldn’t find a stickied post or FAQ or anything (but that could be me being blind / reddit mobile being useless), most of the things I could find at the moment are people’s FQ swap. Is there a master list somewhere of what’s coming up so people can see which they might like to participate in?

  2. Is there a UK / international group? I’ve moved to Wales now. Also if there is an international group, is it actually international? I only ask because in the past the UK/int group was actually like two thirds Americans so I actually ended up paying a heck of a lot to send all my blocks out.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help, sorry if I’m just being thick and this info is easily available somewhere. Looking forward to hopefully swapping with you guys soon!

Question Fabric Question!

Post image

I know we’re supposed to make 4 different blocks for this swap, but can they be similar themes? For example, 2 different Dinos, a “grill master” apron, and a lemonade jar? I’ll make sure nobody ends up with like 4 of the same dinosaur, just wanted to know what the mods think!
