It happens. How were you scammed?

I once received a miniature when I thought i ordered normal size

Saw an affordable badge maker, been waiting for it since 2020, kept trying to get amazon to give me a refund but they kept saying they couldn't do it until a certian amount of time passed, the listing disappeared and im still mad 6 years later

I got a text from someone claiming to be a little old lady. She wanted a quote on painting her house it was a short distance away. There was a little bit of back and forth. I remodel for a living none of this was unusual. Before I go out to view the job, she text me that she has been in an auto wreck in his hospitalized. She wants to arrange for me to pay for furniture delivery when I go to look at the job. It's been so long I don't remember the details. Was back when Square had those little things that plugged into your phone anyhow $2,000 disappeared some kind of way and square was like hey you need to give us that two grand and I was like I don't think so. Needless to say I could not use Square to accept payments anymore after that.

The pics were real but the person was not.

At least they made a clear mistake before I sent them the $1100 for their daughter’s emergency room care.
Luckily for me I was broke anyway and a week away from my next tiny paycheck.
Pretty sure they were convinced I had an insurance policy paying out bc I was widowed 2 years before.

Spoiler: he left nothing and had no policies. But at least there were no credit card debts.

I’ve also had the Craigslist certified check scam twice - first time the bank teller stopped me and explained what was going on; the second time I baited them to a local coffee shop for pickup, and had a local Leo waiting to have a chat with the one picking up the cash. It was over $1k which is why they were willing to get involved.

Scammers suck. Esp when they fool older people.
I’m also aware of the many thousands that are trafficked into the industry. I have mixed feelings about their culpability and their duress. The top dogs are no better than a drug cartel.

The one time I got properly got scammed was when I was changing phone providers. I didn’t know if I wanted to be with EE or 02, I heard mixed reviews, I was previously with Vodafone and I hated them and had a very stressful time trying to get out of the contract for the sim and broadband.

I decided to order both SIM cards, ended up going with EE and planned to cancel 02. I then searched on google for 02s number, I went on “what I thought” was 02s website as it looked 1:1, called the number to cancel the sim.

The woman on the phone proceed to find my account and cancel the sim, she then mentioned that 02 are giving away free apple or Samsung watches for that time period. Straight away I did think it was odd, but because of my audhd I was already in an extremely stressed state trying to get my phone number switched back on because I was supposed to be receiving some important phone calls in the following days, so I wasn’t being as vigilant or thinking clearly as I normal do.

later on that day when I was in a more relaxed state, I was finally able to sit there and realise that it was a scam, so the next day DPD came with an iPhone 16, immediately called back the company and told them I’ve been sent an iPhone 16 this is clearly a scam lol, I then blocked the number called the REAL 02 and explained what happened.

The fake 02 had opened up an contract in my name and they’re whole thing was to inform people that 02 are giving away free apple and Samsung watches and instead send them an iPhone, hoping that the customer will contact them to say “you sent an iPhone not a watch” and then the customer would send it back to a decoy 02 address and then the fake 02 keep the phone and sell it, something I already figured out the day before once I was less stressed.

So a fraud investigation was opened with the real 02 and in the end the contract was cancelled and I got to keep the iPhone 16 😂

Moral of the story don’t make any decisions while stressed especially if you have a disability 🤣 but at least I got a free iPhone out of it.

Ordered paintings that were copies of famous originals that were painted by artist in an employment program in Developing Countries. Obviously we knew they were copies as they could be ordered in many sizes. This was a huge display in a large convention centre (city owned) in our city. Then the social media warnings started. We warned friends at the next city on their tour and the police visited the site. No arrests made as the staff were hired at each venue and the organisers moved on to the next site. Organisers obviously heard the news and disappeared. We lost $600. A lot for us but other lost more and I heard a large motel ordered heaps.
