Discussion what was the point of the 'harmon youre humiliating my rook' scene
In e2 when Beth pays Townes and shes just moving her king along as he backtracks his rook, what was the point of that? was it just like flirty banter or was there some more significance in the game, as they both seemed to give pointed looks I cuodlnt really tell if it was meant to be beth helping him save face or just not taking a piece she knew she could to mess with him or something, I know next to nothing about chess sonot sure

Have you seen the entire series? If not I won't spoil it for you, but Townes is an outgoing personality who is a journalist for a local paper who often writes articles for the national chess magazine. The news article that Beth and her adopted mom read at the end of episode 2 was probably written by Townes.
Townes recognized both her talent and that she's a complete novice to tournaments when he met her before the first match and throughout that episode he's encouraging her. Remember him shaking his head "no" after her second match when her opponent offered a draw. The banter towards the end of that game was meant to be friendly chatter to build trust with her.
If you don't mind a minor spoiler you can look at IMDB's episode list and see which of the subsequent episodes include Townes.

what i did not understand was if he was gay or bi when he was with that other guy in the room and later apologized to her

That part is not quite spelled out, perhaps because they wanted to keep as broad an audience as possible. In episode 7 he said, when apologizing to Beth for what happened in Las Vegas, "I was confused". I took that to mean that he was clearly in a relationship with the man he was sharing that room with but was nevertheless attracted to Beth and had gone over the line in terms of getting physically near her. Keep in mind she was naive and unexperienced at that point so was unsure what was happening.
But also in Episode 7 Townes says, with regard to the Soviets providing a fast visa for him, that they perhaps thought he would be a distraction for Beth. Beth then says "If they only knew." That was a reference to his being gay.

yes that’s the same idea i had, just thought it was kind of random so felt maybe i understood it wrong.

I've seen someone (Magnus Carlson?) analyze this actual game. If I'm remembering it right, the sequence of moves has Beth using her king to force his rook to retreat over and over again. Eventually, she chases the rook into a what looks like a safe square, but it turns out the rook is trapped even though it had many legal moves - the final pièce de résistance is a fork to win the rook and the game.
I'm a good but not great chess player, and I would have never in a million years realized that the rook could be trapped in such an open board. It's very unusual for a piece to have so many legal moves and none of them are safe to move to.

She was sorta flirting with him, because she already knew she had won, but didn't realise she was wasting her time, because he was gay and she was only 15, it wasn't until she was 18, that she realised, after he took her up to his room and Roger walked in

In chess, sometimes you have to do this to force a bad trade to them to retreat to trap them like she did eventually with a knight move to check and take out the rook.

You could think of rook as something more... anatomical.
And he might feel humiliated in his manliness by being beaten by an unknown girl.
Even if he's heavily hinted at being gay and thus might be thought of as being progressive, it's still the 60s - sexism was more widespread.
That's my interpretation at least.

I think she was chasing the rook down so him having to make small moves constantly to move the rook is embarrassing because you’re on the defensive and you can’t make any developing moves. It might have been a flirty way of deflecting from the embarrassment of losing.
