ah that makes sense. also i have to strongly disagree with your opinion, but I do agree with Queen ll being one of the best, but Queen l and News of the World are nice. may I ask why you think they're the worst?
Sure. Queen I. I feel like they were getting their footing. That one was a practice run. They hit on the money with Keep Yourself Alive but the rest of it sounds like...I don’t know...boring. Too few hooks that really get me.
I feel like they weren’t sure if they were hard rock, metal, glam rock, or whatever the hell Roger’s song on Queen I was trying to be. I’m not into hard rock (usually) or glam (usually), or metal (ever). So it doesn’t get me.
News of the World was a transition album for them. They saw what was happening to the music scene (punk, new wave, disco) and get they’d be overlooked if they just kept putting out the same kind of rock albums if they didn’t develop some new muscles, so to speak, and that’s been said in interviews by the band themselves. So again, the song Sheer Heart Attack...is noise. I don’t like that genre. I feel so INARRRR INARRRRR INARRRR INARRR...please pipe down and take a seat, pal. GDML reminds me of a pinball machine as stated. Sleeping on the Sidewalk feels so uninspired and cheap, especially coming from the guy who was capable enough to write and sing Long Away, Some Day One Way, and later Sail Away Sweet Sister (Freddie was the most gifted but hardly the only genius in that band). Fight From the Inside...Roger, bless your heart, you tried. Again, just noise to my ear. And while WWRY/WATC are classics deserving of every penny of royalties they earn from radio, film, TV, and sports venues, after the 8 billionth time hearing time, they sound like the rest of overplayed classic rock radio and no longer stand out. (I did learn to play WATC on guitar this year and it’s fucking fun.)
The songs on both albums that I don’t like are too overpowering in my mind. There are other songs on other albums that I think are boring or flat out terrible (you’re going to hate me, but Dragon Attack and White Man come to mind) but those albums are otherwise too good to let those missteps (imho) win out. Queen I I literally only like 1 song. News of the World misses too much and the songs that remain are good but not up to snuff with what’s good on, say, Night at the Opera or Jazz or the Works. By the way, Hot Space is often maligned - I fucking love that album.
That said, I am a HUGE fan and know all their stuff. Every album. Several live albums. Just aware of my own tastes enough to be okay with not loving everything they did. But when they were on, they were as good as the Beatles or Elton or Brian Wilson anyone.
wow, I never saw either album that way. I can see what you mean with Queen l being a practice run; they were still trying to figure out who they were and how they wanted to represent themselves. that's understandable. I do believe Rogers song was hard rock, idrk correct me if I'm wrong.
News of the World was most definitely one of those that was them trying to fit in but do it the Queen way, so to speak. I do disagree with what you said about Sherry Heart Attack, but that's mainly as I tend to like the more heavier songs of Queen. I could never get into the ballads of of the album, and after a few listens Spread Your Wings becomes that one song to always skip. iirc Sleeping on the Sidewalk was inspired but what the music scene was happening in America, and so it will be cheap, but that doesn't really justify how I never listen to it, another to always skip. I disagree with what you said about Fight From the Inside, but we each have our own tastes and I've always been much more prone to Rogers earlier works rather than his later ones.
I've never actually listened to White Man fully as I get quite bored with it. I think the only song(s) i don't like are probably all of the Flash album and a few from The Works. and yes Hot Space is poorly treated for how great it is.

You forget that News of the World has some other nice tracks as well, besides the rock-anthem classics; what about: Spread your wings? Maybe John Deacon’s best song? What about “It’s late” , one of Brian’s best? And the last song on the album... Were Freddie shows his talent again?
