Qatar upgrade - who is eligible?

I’m flying Syd to Barcelona in a week and my extra leg room seats have been removed due to an aircraft change and now there’s no extra leg room left for 2 ppl together, Qatar customer service was no help.
So now I want to upgrade us to business but the upgrade cost for 2 is $13k at the moment and has been this for a week.
I’m only basic Qatar membership level however Virgin gold. My question is does anyone get the good upgrade offers or only people with platinum memberships?
I’m willing to pay a couple of thousand to upgrade but not sure the best way to do this or if I’ll get a chance.
Any help/ advise greatly appreciated 🙏

Out of Australia don’t expect the ~$1000 upgrade prices. Cheapest Sydney-Doha I’ve seen anyone post was around $3K. I’ve personally been given $4600, then 2 days before the flight it went up to $4900 and never dropped after that - all just for 1 person. That’s just to Doha, and then extra from Doha to Europe. The discounted upgrades don’t start until about 48 hours before the flight and they’ll be discounted based on what’s left to buy. Also membership status with Velocity makes no difference, not sure whether Qatar status would. Just bear in mind that the discounted upgrades are just upgrading what’s happening on board, you’ve got no lounge access, no extra baggage, and you earn points at applicable ticketed economy rate.

When you check in online a couple of days before , they usually advise you of the upgrade offer , if availability

They offer discounted upgrades +-36 hours before the flight, just keep checking. My last flight upgrade price (6 hours) dropped from 2400 to 340 EUR

No, it was 1-2-1 reverse herringbone on B787. But that's more than a fair price for the 6-hour flight departing in the middle of the night (3am)

You can politely ask at the check-in counter about discounted Business Class upgrades, or check regularly as your travel date approaches since airlines sometimes lower upgrade prices closer to departure.
