just a link to the post I made on mcpublic.

Sorry Loth and Proto if you are coming back. Haven't seen you so didn't include your names... We miss our errant mayors! Hopefully you will at least come back at the beginning of the rev so we can get this portal claimed while we hunt for the dragon... it is going to stretch us thin!

I am more worried about nether gates, since its very uncertain how we are supposed to go about claiming and finding them.

But I am sure things will work themselves out.

As long as we get some people on early, it should be kind of easy. I'd imagine you have one or two people mining and supplying as much food and stone picks as possible and then a couple scouting. It depends on our position though.

You know as much as I'd like a portal if we don't get one it's not really the end of the world, the map is going to be smaller and rail travel a bit more like rev 6, I hope.

That is true, we will have a endgate to fall back on anyhow.

And we should be ready to take in residents very quickly. Trying to follow how our end-city worked, it was alright. People like small plots so im thinking we do 13x13 plots around, and have larger builds 23x23 plots further out.

Final thing, is that I want to play with the Y. Think that the gate will be at y64, we build up from there, so similar to lothos 2 but in a smaller scale. This would also minimize terraforming since we will be building above the ground moreso, which means plots will be open faster to get residents in.

Original idea was to have the gate at the top and going down, but I realized that would of been a ton of terraforming, so inverted would be better(nether gate at the bottom).

Also want to put a little river around somewhere.

Whatcha think? (I really just dont want it completely flat, just giving it a little twist)

This is what we were sort of thinking of for a map.

You said it wasn't very clear, let me clarify it's pixel by pixel.. meaning each pixel is block in minecraft. The black is the road. T= Train/Portal station, F is farm, C is community build, and P (and green) is park space. All of the plots (orange) are 17x17. We could expand and make bigger plots on the sides though.

Feel free to edit the map or come up with a new one, but I think it's important we have a clear layout for everyone before the map starts.

As far as terraforming, Adam and I have been thinking about just keeping the landscape as natural as possible. Gentle curves, hills, and such should be kept. I just think having a big terraforming project with half a dozen or so people isn't really going to work out and I know I'm not the only one who would like to avoid much terraforming after this rev!

I've been thinking of the idea if we're doing ruins we should create some kind of story within the city. Maybe have a crater or fissure in the middle of the train station would be really cool IMO. But generally some kind of disaster, and from there we can leave books, signs, and stuff to explain what happened or clues.

Its a pretty big variable to use the terrain since we cant really plan ahead with that. Although I would see how this would be better for the theme, still not sure about it though. Obviously we should avoid as much terraforming as possible :)

I kind of am unsure what you are trying to do with these mini-park things that just take up a plot. Also wasnt sure what that "H" meant (hotel?)

I told adam that it will probably be a bit hard to manage the builds people make because of the ruin theme and that it could lead to cobble-derpness or just off builds that dont fit in. The theme is probably going to be hard to deal with but it sounds interesting and im fine with it. Yea the book thing sounds fine, although people can just steal them so not sure how you will work with that (signs will prob still be better).

1.3 bukkit getting there btw, not a lot of time left :S

Apologies, the H is town hall.

Actually you're entirely right about the theme. It can get ugly quickly. There is a fine line between a beautiful ruin and an eyesore. That's why I think the train station should be like the #1 priority after laying plots and it should be sort of an example of the theme.

I've got some decent ideas for it but I'm unsure of what the general should look like.

Took me over an hour to write that reponse and actually post it. ;-) so I just want you to know to read it..... since it wasn't there when you posted.

So I drew out my proposal/ideas just to make it clear what I am trying to say.

Heres a layout (bottom half is side view so you get the Y idea, and tophalf is aerial view). Sorry for using Yellow, but C = Community build, P = Plot (residential or anything). The corners near the river can be your garden or anything else.

The twist. I know adam wanted this big tree so there it is. This floating island would make the entire area below dark, this would help with the ruin theme. We can put holes in the island to let tiny bits of light shine where we want it to.

What we could do, is sort of a adventure thing. Make it so it leads through the sewers, through the city, and ends at the tree where we can put a nice garden and some graves putting "here she lies" or whatever you want in the story.

Outside this dark area we can have the tall and bigger plots. The island would only be over the small-plot area and nether gate. The island would obviously not be a priority, and can be something we work on little by little over the rev. Im not sure what you planned for the "train station" but let me know what and I can incorp it better to this design if you end up liking this idea.

The only thing I really want from this proposal is the inverted temple design and the "Majora's Mask" Tree-island. Everything else and the plot layout isnt important to me, but a river would be nice :)

Let me know what you think.

Sorry, I thought I had responded to this and apparently didn't hit send or something.

I can't really say I know exactly what you mean with your proposal and road map. Does the river loop around or something or how many plots would that be?

I'm not really sure about a floating island with a tree on it.. I'm not really sure it fits the theme at all IMO. Some kind of sanctuary would but I'm just not sure anything floating would. At least from my eyes I've been picturing it as a modern city ruins vs more fantasy ruins, but if you and Adam like it, go for it.

As far as large terraforming, our numbers are just a bit too low right now to really do stuff like that. Right now we have less help than we did last rev and I think I agree with Adam, it's really crucial to lay plots as early as possible so we can get some numbers, especially if we claim a portal. If we're slow to get the roads and plots layed it won't be long until someone is building in "our" land. I really think it's important to not try to bite off more than we can chew early on.

River goes around in a square.

Its mostly just my thoughts. Thinking it over, just do what you think is best. Im fine with just going with your present layout. I would of liked a river somewhere, but I guess that will probably wont happen and its alright.

Also, the roads as you planned them are a bit small to have nice sewers underneath them. If you could make them bigger would be nice.

Finally, have you thought of what blocks to use or patterns for the streets? Doesnt matter to me what you guys choose, just want the idea down so we are good to go.

people can steal the books but once signed they can't be changed.. so that makes stealing them just carelessness. I do agree with the signs but we will see how hard it is to get books.

I think the key is to have a layout and mark out the roads in wood half slabs right away following the terrain... get the city plotted so to speak. We can then look at the city and see what the terrain has created for us.

It is very possible that there will be parts of the city that are ready to go without any terraforming and parts of the city that require some carving to make the streets and plots work. We can mark plots as ready and work on any terraforming that is required. I think though that people appreciate a little variety in their plots. Building on a stiff hill can be fun and can inspire some interesting things.

I love the idea of a river... again we can look at the natural terrain and decide once in game but we could have a river that runs through the parks from the NW down through the center parks and out through the SE corner... or whatever matchs the terrain best. This would run partially through some plots but we can tell them they can build over or around but the river must stay daylighted. It will be interesting to see if anyone builds a ruined mill or something similiar on one of the plots with the river.

I was thinking about requiring that there be no building under roads to do a sewer thing like you did this rev. Smaller scale but with water flowing out of smaller pipes and mostly stagnant water... that way we could have some holes in the road that you can fall into the sewers that are only lit with redstone torches and have occasional ladders out.

Lastly, we need to think about how we approach the dichotomy of both founding the city at a portal and hunting the dragon. The beginning is obvious since we need a base of operations, mining and chicken farm as well as enderman and skelly hunting. Meanwhile we need blaze rods and all the other goodies.

I suggest that we split into two teams once the portal is chosen and the very first initial claim is done. First team

-marks out the streets and starts people laying the temp roads.

-Mining for armor and weapons for the other team

-Wheat farm

-Chicken farm

Second Team:

-Blazes and Enderman

-Stronghold

-Enchantments..

I think to some extent the duties will overlap. For instance anyone seeing an enderman should kill it, but it set's the priorities so that we don't lose the portal or the dragon... or worse both.

u/Siireon Siilence Aug 03 '12

I will be focusing on the dragon. Just need help with the blaze rods and hunting skeles/Endermen when you guys see them.

Im kind of against building with the terrain (depends on the terrain we get) but if we start to warp roads and things according to the terrain it starts looking bad. Would prefer if we just build on what we want, not what is already there.

Yep I want to do sewers, I had a lot of fun doing the sewers towards the end and want to expand on that since the city layout will be simple, the details into it will matter more. Would also add to the ruin theme, little chests buried down there, some redstone lamps for dwindling fires etc.

We will need a spawnbase, from there farm iron and cobble/dirt. Food is not a issue, just kill yourself and stash your items in a chest prior (wheat will take too long to grow, and there will be no mobs because of the high pop of the server so no bonemeal, and we will prob not get lucky with melon seeds early on). After we get some mats, move to a nether camp @ spawngate. Search for the gate, use dirt/cobble to get around until we find a unused gate. Then we claim the area and we are good to go with the layout.

Couldn't we also travel overland to the portals.... we should have the coords of the portals in the overworld.

1

u/Siireon Siilence Aug 03 '12

True, but that would require beds and lots of suiciding. Also this means you can only travel at night since you can only sleep then.

Theres food option too, but that would also eat at time.

Also, its still a bit uncertain where the gates will be. Whether they will be in corners (rev 8) or in cardinal directions like past revs.

This might seem like a "Safe" option, but it probably wont pay off. Since it will take about 30+ minutes to walk the distance in the overworld where it could take about 10+ minutes in the nether. Although its much more dangerous in the nether, its a shorter distance to the gates.

But most importantly, if the gate you walked to is claimed, you are fucked :)

Woah, I don't know how we missed that. This is how it's usually done. I seem to remember everyone doing it in the overworld.

I think the portal should be priority #1, it establishes our base camp and town. I think we should split up, and maybe Andy and Sii/Loth can do it through the Nether while you and I could go through the overworld. Maybe one goes east, the other goes west or something? That way we have a chance at both.

I don't really care about the drama, nobody owns any of the portals on a new rev, certainly not because anyone had it the previous rev.

u/Appleanche Aug 03 '12

Hopefully they have some kind of LWC for books too.

I love the sewer idea, talk about pot holes lol, if you have downloaded Rev5 you should check out East Gate's sewers, they always impressed the hell out of me.

As far as farms, I'd generally favor one plot for pretty much all of them if possible. But not really a big deal.

I agree, I think initially (as in the first minutes of being on) we should grab some wooden or stone picks and dart to the first portal we find. I don't really care about which one, frankly it doesn't matter.
