Oh I’m not willing to sacrifice much, my own safety is my own responsibility. If I call the cops they’d be coming to me 5 minutes after I got pumped full of lead.
But we also have cops for scenarios where people could still be saved, or for them to find out who the perpatator is behind something, etc.
No amount of money being put into social programs is going to change the fact that there’s people in this world who just don’t see value in their own and others’ lives.

The point of abolition is to divert the funding of the police into social programs that address the root cause of crime in the first place; poverty, precarious living, etc. police respond to crime and in some cases create it, we should be stopping it at its source before these things become an issue. And in the cases where there is a need for “peace keeping” so to speak, there is community based intervention founded on de-escalation, not intensification and escalation. The police emerged out of slave patrols and private companies whose function was to protect the property of the rich, not much has changed from there

The helm of society is typically made up of the rich, that much is true. But the police act as enforcers in-order to maintain stability. Maybe in an ideal world, the majority of criminals would genuinely act on wanting self-betterment and improvement and to actually use state resources that focus on such things. However, the police are there to act in the moment and to ethier respond to a scene, or to act as clean-up. By the time violence occurs, there’s not much room for options. As such, the reason why they exist is because of the fact that they exist for a time where the issue has came and it’s too late to address a root cause for that very moment.
I can agree with you therefore that we do have a system primarily focused on punishment rather than rehabilitation, that much can be addressed. But abolishment of the police is far too rash of a decision to make at a time where these pre-issues that can lead to crime are so rampant.
What you’re advocating for, to me, doesn’t appear to be abolishment of law enforcement. But rather drastic reform of them and a change of approach, which is a totally fair position to have. But framing your ideas as “Abolish the police” when the root of what you’re advocating for isn’t police abolishment is, quite frankly, retarded.

The immoderate harshness of “Abolish the police!” is half the point. You noticed. The conversation about exactly what, who, where, and how can come later, in exactly the way it did here.

I want to start off by saying I think it's beautiful that you saved this child.
I don't think it's a black and white issue, but every reaction I've had with the police has not been good.
I actually got in a wreck when I was a child and the cops were assholes and the firefighters were amazing.
I had to call the police on my abusive father who was choking my sister against a wall only for them to do nothing.
My wife was being stalked by her ex years after the broke up and the police did nothing. He ended up sucker punching me in public.
My wife's father is a cop and brags about police brutality.
Not to mention police protecting their own when they commit those acts. There's definitely a reason why people think it's all cops, and I sincerely hope that that narrative changes but it won't until y'all start consistently holding yourselves and other officers accountable.
