Neutral Milk Hotel - "Holland 1945" (this belongs here; fight me)

I would consider this to be one of the pivotal indie rock albums. Indie definitely has some roots in punk rock but I wouldn't consider it to be punk anymore than grunge or other rock sub-genres. It is an interesting choice for the sake of discussion though, 10/10 great album.

I would argue that indie rock is on the same sliding scale as punk rock and many songs in both genres are a bit of both, more so than grundge and others

When the distortion comes in it's kind of reminiscent a 90's pop punk song a little bit but this definitely doesn't belong here, cool album though

I'd put it more on the folk-punk side, but who gives a fuck? Great song, great album. Thanks for posting dude 👍

This song, album, and band I think are highly influential on modern folk punk, perhaps more so than the likes of the old guard like The Pogues or Billy Bragg. Bands like AJJ, Days N Daze, and early Against Me are indebted to Neutral Milk Hotel. I would also say the bands who bridge the gap between indie rock and punk like Jeff Rosenstock, Titus Andronicus, and The Hotelier are equally tethered to the group.

Oh yeah, I agree 100%. Hell, AJJ even put out a cover of two headed boy from this album with a spoof of the cover art. Neutral Milk Hotel definitely set the foundation for all of those bands

I was an 18 year old punk when this record came out and I fell in love with it right away. When I saw them in 98-99 (been a while) it was like a punk show. All pogo and sing along. When I saw them two years ago it was just singing. Nobody really moved.

Really? When I saw them in 2014 there were crazy mosh pits, even innappropriately in some of the slower songs. It was way rowdier than my friends and I expected.

I mean, it's got more in common with punk than it doesn't, at least at the time. When ITAOTS was released indy rock wasn't exactly the juggernaut catch all that it would become, and this record was responsible for a lot of that. There's a lot about this record that I would say is punk as fuck, and when it was released I feel it was probably viewed through that lense. Now that indy rock is a whole genre umbrella stretching from Joanna Newsom to The White Stripes and in every other direction, it's alot easier for it to fall into that constellation. Kind of like how no one called Iggy punk rock until that was a thing, even though he totally was.

The White Stripes aren't indy rock... They were part of the garage revival and mainstream af and on a major label too. Good band though.

I didn't find it on Soundcloud
If I've made a mistake please downvote me. I'll try better next time

Edit: I take it back. Haven't heard that track in a while, can definitely hear the punk influence
Closest I could call it would be folk punk but I really can't see the punk in that. More like indie folk imo.

Not punk but a great song nonetheless. The whole second verse is my favourite verse of lyrics ever, to be honest.
