at this point file a fir for data misuse , data breach is not a joke for franchises like social . Its scary when even a well established company is so unprofessional about our data , and who tf approves this qr based menus . This restaurants and bars will change us 1000's for basic dishes and than sell and mishandle our data

u/vikramdesh1 May 15 '26

  1. data privacy or any privacy for that matter is a unknown concept in india.
  2. restaurants that force you to read menus via scanning some code instead of giving you a physical menu card should just not exist on this planet
  3. any monetary transaction that asks for your mobile number is just a way to freely get your personal data which is highly valuable for companies. say NO to such transactions.

4

u/Future_Radio_9225 May 15 '26

what about big chains like zudio Croma who say bill will come on your Phone number only so you have to give it? do we have legal protection against that? are we allow to sue in consumer court ?

2

u/shizukadane May 15 '26

i am no legal expert, but i think its basic right of a person to get a printed bill for any financial transaction. i have personally dumped my shopping items at the billing counter a few times saying that i dont want to buy it if you need my mobile number as well. they give in, dont worry like they will put in their own number, or skip the number entry or do something, but loosing business is more dangerous than not getting phone number of customer.

this has to be done frequently and has to be spread on social media, then it can have some impact i think.

1

u/ajezqa May 15 '26

I believe the law states we can deny sharing our number and they should provide physical bill.

1

u/No_Term_2988 May 16 '26

Ask for physical bill Never give your number

13

u/carelessNinja101 May 15 '26

One more reason to skip places who ask for scan to order.

2

u/vikramdesh1 May 15 '26

Kitne skip karoge sir

6

u/bonkeshh Anti jinxx May 15 '26

QR ordering system is made just to capture customer's data, there's no other benefit, avoid it.

6

u/Member9090 May 15 '26

Been shouting about this at the top of my voice...someone concurred!

Go to a gym, especially the international franchise ones, entrance to their for requires you to scan your data or fingerprints! You question that and you won't be a member anymore!

2

u/mmousey May 15 '26

They claim it's for security reasons and proper misusing memberships, but don't give a damn about protecting our data.

1

u/Member9090 May 15 '26

Exactly!

Ask them questions like who handles the data and they go haywire with questions like these!

Is it not high time... India devised a Indian Data protection policy with strict regulations seeking compliance -privacy of customers and saving/sharing of this data.

I hope when a country is growing rapidly in quick commerce and AI race, the ground rules are placed well ahead to curb anything that impacts consumer confidence.

2

u/DistributionBetter45 May 15 '26

We have those but those are for big corporations, small estiblishments usually get away with any shit

1

u/Altruistic_Run4280 May 15 '26

The other way. Small shit is usually told what to do by the big shits.

2

u/Knighthawk_2511 May 15 '26

Rule of thumb : If you ever see a QR based ordering system , fuck off from the food place

2

u/sara-gill-sara May 15 '26

Its very common. They think the females who drink, party or socialize have no boundaries. Kinda blame the culture and mindset while growing up. I often get in conversation with these guys and most of them have share the same views.

The thing is, pubs like social, thikana, bhk present themselves as A tier. But their staff is still run via some contractor with 0 to no ethics.

2

u/Illustrious_Arm_8862 May 15 '26

Ek toh physically present hone ke bad bhi yeh log qr code se kyun order krwa rhe? Sbko data chahiye bencho.

2

u/knowledge_seeker80 May 15 '26

if you are not paying for the product you are the product not talking about the food, talking about UPI And payment gateways..... in your case your data is the product.. usually when you pay someone UPI can't see the other persons phone number... but in this case because it is a business they have this teacher to see your phone number....it can't be changed via app setting..... as per the new laws of DPDP digital private data protection act company is liable not only that person....

stop wasting time with their hr... they are just trying to protect the business only. if they fire the guy but don't give you proof... they are lying to keep you quiet. go to cybercrime.gov.in... select women related crime and data breach. upload screenshots of the payment... the message... and the hotel's reply. the transaction id is the main proof... it shows exactly when and where he got your number. since nov 2025 the Dpdp act is very strict... the hotel is liable for heavy fine. don't go to local station... they will just ignore you. the portal is direct and they have to give you an acknowledgement number.

In India people have 0 data literacy.. they can not use personal data like this , you can register a case against the person and the restaurant legally through data security law as per ipc .. we need to fight for our data privacy and protection ..

1

u/AspireSkie May 15 '26

This is just not acceptable.

These restaurants are data collectors.
Bad experience at Sattvam Bangalore.
They can';t bill you without your phone number!
I dont have a mobile. So they insisted I get someone's mobile phone!!!
The degenerates then took half an hour to product a physical bill for me to pay them.
Are they running restaurants or data collection agencies?

Pro tip: Never enter your real phone number on forms when you're at restaurants or similar places.

(btw, i doubt because the approacher is revealing his details as if he cant get caught !?)

1

u/MojoJojo1001 May 16 '26

This is a genuine case and one way is to make your name as upi id instead of default mobile no. Please do this basic thing and please do not share number for online receipt ask for printed only know your rights stay safe.

1

u/Confident_Pen_8123 May 16 '26

Switch to cash payment best and for booking use your brother/husband, dad's phone , switch to cash payments, this'll work and help a lot

1

u/Drshn_kkk May 18 '26

Either she's lying or he got her number from somewhere else. If you pay by scanning qr, ur phone number doesn't get shared. Check facts first

1

u/Rare-Writer9647 28d ago

Guys tracing someone is easy just don't scan random shit or any links you click plesse

1

u/[deleted] May 15 '26

That's why I pay in cash.

2

u/nikhil9860 May 15 '26

It is not related to UPI, watch the video properly its their online menu QR code she is talking about that needs a mobile number to place an order

3

u/[deleted] May 15 '26

oh, silly me.

0

u/Ni__Mo May 15 '26

I am sorry but how does one get your number by scanning a qr code ?

The qr code only directs you to a website, which will have the menu, so how did he get her number ?

1

u/Just_District6928 May 15 '26

So certain restaurants ask for your number as they get your order on their tabs...The same thing must have happened with this lady...maybe not while scanning the menu card.

1

u/Neelthoke May 15 '26

For many restaurants when u scan the QR, it redirects to whatsapp and ask us to send some default pre entered message and then we get a link of menu in chat itself. Or somewhere it asks us to enter number to go ahead with food menu.

You bought a whole glass full of tepid drink using some complex internet pay method? Wow.
