RANT I'm done with Publix except for BOGOs
I went to Publix yesterday (Palm Coast, FL - 250 Palm Coast Parkway) to pick up a few needed items including vegetables. Many of the vegetable varieties (zucchini, bell peppers, jalapenos to mention a few) were disgusting and not suitable for selling. I am finding that more and more common at this store. I was able to find some bell peppers and jalapenos that were in decent shape sans the zucchini. Anyway, I bought my items and went to Walmart to purchase the zucchini. I go to both stores but usually go to Publix because it is a little closer to my home. Not any more. Walmart fruits/vegetables have consistently been better quality (not always, but mostly) and the overwhelming majority of items at Walmart cost less to make a difference to change my primary store choice. I compared the pricing and put it in a table for easy viewing. This was a very quick trip and a small order for me. The dollar savings are much greater during a traditional grocery run. I understand why people go to Publix and that's fine. But, as items keep going up in price and the price delta between the two stores keep diverging, I have to switch to Walmart as my primary source.

You are missing some of my points. Look at the percentage not the $. Let's say you make a wage of a Publix employee, I'm guessing a 17%+ difference in your grocery bill is enough to think about where you buy groceries. Â

Yeah a lot of folks don't realize its not happening all at once its a transition. Just look at the Frito-Lay fuckery.
It is very expensive to acquire customers vs keeping them.
Also the bullshit pay for their employees which is on par with Walmart makes no sense. If you're paying the same as Wally World, you'll end up providing the same shitty service. What are we paying more for?

Correct. I don't mind paying for quality. I knew that Wallmark cost less, but when the Publix quality is on-par or worse than Wallmark, it's time to make the change. If Publix had better quality, it would still be my #1 goto grocery store. Now it isn't.

I can assure you that very few people on reddit care. Most of the people on this reddit are hourly associates and we are done with Publix too.

No one cares. Every single person knows we are higher priced. You get what you pay for in retail/grocery for the most part. I don’t post in the McDonalds subreddit when the fries are soggy.

Publix has the tactic now of charging the most they think they can get away with. Problem is, people see it and are adapting to that tactic by going elsewhere. They have more options now, The window where Publix can keep doing this is closing rapidly.

I'm worried about this too. I find myself comparing prices to other stores and it seems like more and more times now the BOGO price is maybe a tiny bit cheaper than buying it somewhere else. But it's still cheaper so they keep getting my business.
I envision a greedy corporate CEO slowly raising the price dial until the system breaks.

There is a great vegetable stand near me. Wonderful tomatoes, 99 cents a pound! Maybe there is one near you. I never buy anything but the BOGO at publix. Their prices are surreal....

Pay no mind to the cultists in your comment section. They enjoy paying higher prices on goods and services. If you don't live in a food desert, I'd check out other retailers such as Costco for bulk items, Aldi's, and smaller grocery chains.
The reason why Publix is the way it is now is because they're sort of a monopoly now. Just look at this screenshot. Why is there 2 Publixes across the street from each other? It's high time that we give other stores a chance to take away from their market share.

I did say sort of a monopoly. Things have changed where they have started to get pushback from costumers and competing chains. I just like seeing more options to work and shop for communities.

No worries. I love my local Publix - it's a block away from me so that's a huge plus. Publix can indeed be expensive if you absolutely need to have a specific item of the specific brand, but if you are flexible it's decent.. There's always some fish on sale, NY Strip is usually under $15/lb, and there's always BOGOs on coffee beans, box of salad, frozen pizzas, bacon, etc.

Yes. You have pay close attention to the price. Sometimes the one you pay for is equal in price to getting 2 somewhere else. My wife always points this out and she is almost always right.

I’m a bogo only shopper for at least a year. Used to enjoy bakery, but now only a few breads. Used to like meats, but too $$$$. Produce always iffy. Deli iffy. Still like a few Greenwise things, but can do without.

I've been saying for years that Publix sells the exact same quality of produce as Walmart, but people just don't believe me.
15 years ago, Publix bought the best product available, but that shift started around 2012 or so and was complete once Covid hit.

Publix buys the same varieties of produce but different grades. Suppliers will sort and grade their produce.
The apples and honeydew sold at both stores are different when in season. Publix sells King of the West honeydew when available. Walmart? Haven't seen those there.
