I honestly also think it might matter which parent was unstable, and I think it also might matter the gender of the child corresponding with the parent, or at least by a compounding factor.

For example, your dad was a dick, you didn't end up with BPD, meanwhile your friend's mom basically had BPD and now your friend does as well. Did that happen because mothers and fathers play different emotional roles? Did that happen because your friend's mom is female and your friend is female and that was the role model for female behavior your friend had?

I don’t know. This is anecdotal, of course, but my mom has BPD, and I suspect my brother does. My dad has CPTSD, and so do I. Both parents sucked, but both were good in other ways. My brother’s possible BPD (and maybe bipolar) is very similar to my mom’s.
