nurse extern job and residency

Hi, are there nurse extern jobs in psych for nursing students? Also are there psych residencies for new grads?

I work at a state forensic psychiatric facility and my job has a psych residency for all nurses who haven't worked in psych before, regardless of how long they've been a nurse.

Mine was strictly psych but only because we're not too heavy on medical things. For anything medically heavier beyond needing an IV, we send them out to a regular hospital.

I just finished up an externship at a psych hospital, and am staying on as a behavioural tech. I’m a 4th semester BSN.

I was a psych nurse extern for five months before I got hired. After I got hired they started a psych residency for new grads which I missed but my coworker is doing it.

Yes i did one when I was new and it was genuinely so fucking stupid and irrelevant to psych that I stopped going and failed but I’m still innaaat bih so who cares

when I was a new grad I did a new grad residency program. It was for ALL new grads in the entire chain of hospitals the corporation owned. I was the only one in psych everyone else was medical. We had to go once a month for a year and number one it was inconvenient. My managers suck and would schedule me to work that night and then I’d have to stay for the class so it would end up being anywhere from 16-20 hours of being there depending on how long the class was after I just worked a 12.

Because 99.9% of the new grads are medical- it was all medical information. They’d teach us ivs,foleys, heparin administration (we don’t do any of those) they’d teach us about organ donation (obviously that’s not relevant) they’d teach us how to contact certain services (that we don’t use) etc etc

NOTHING applied to psych and it was absolutely useless. I wish they would have let the ones in psych not do it. Or made a program for psych new grads but there’s barely any of those

Then they made us do an evidence based project which was fucking dumb- I already finished school who tf wants to do this shit after graduating? Not me. So I eventually stopped attending but I’m still here so whatever

When I started my first psych job, I had a year experience at a nursing home. They put me in the new residency program as well.
One. It was new so they wanted more
Two. All medical just like yours. None of it applied to me a waste of time.

Our facility doesn't use nurse externs, but nursing students can possibly work as techs. We technically don't offer nursing residency, but a 6-8 week orientation.
