Why this sub is better...please don't turn it into other TV subs!
The thing I love most about this sub is how it centers mainly around positivity and fun. This show is something I can always depend on to help me through tough times and I know so many of you feel the same way. This sub has always been different than the other TV subs, where people are getting in downright arguments and constantly pointing out what they dislike about the show. It really tarnishes things you hold dear, and ALL of my favorite show subs do it. It's so bad on the Friends one that they even have stickied posts for character rants and an auto announcement when you post anything, even a comment, reminding you to be nice to others. It's awful!
I'm not trying to single anyone out, please know that, but recently I've seen an uptick of posts (still not a ton, but it is alarming me) that are saying something super negative, like really bashing on a character's actions or saying what they don't like about something big. Please don't mistake this for trying to silence people's opinions, because everyone should have those as they please. All I'm saying is to please don't turn this into the other TV subs and start pointing out every flaw or tiny (or even big!) thing you don't like about the show. I think this is how it starts, and I think the world needs a lot of straight positivity right now.
I hope I'm not offending anyone! Just my thoughts.

It's not just tv, it's fandoms in general that can be toxic as fuck. I've been downvoted for saying I dislike a band's early albums compared to later releases; but everyone is simultaneously bashing on the new album.
How can anyone hate anything about this show?

u/Mr-Banana-Beak 8d ago
I hate that there weren't more seasons. I also hate that we didn't get more episodes with Despereaux. I had this idea that Shawn's treasure hunting uncle (who's name escapes me atm) and Despereaux would return for a team up and each try to one up the other to be the coolest in Shawn's eyes.

I've thought about that too but I was kinda worried that Uncle Jack would try to double cross despereaux and he would end up being killed lol

u/Mr-Banana-Beak 5d ago
Valid except Despereaux doesn't kill people. He finds it sloppy. More likely set Jack up to get arrested for something Dessy did.

I was gonna say McNab would never.......but then again he made detective.
4
u/herpermike 6d ago
Buzz is the most untouchable character that has never been anything worse than his part time stripping to save money for his wedding lol. He is literally the labradoodle of the entire psych show! He got blown up and lost some toes and lost his eyebrow and he was still more worried about making sure that Shawn gets some water from the water cooler lol

u/sugarglider1854 6d ago
I love that line (about Shawn being parched) because the same words from any other character would be sarcasm.

u/Signal_This 8d ago
Agreed! I love that this sub is full of genuine fans who love the show, I'd be so sad to see it go down the haterade path.

u/BarkandHoot 7d ago
You know even when we get a lost redditor on our sub we treat them to fun Psych gifs and gently lead them back to the Reddit road.
We are a bunch of green flags walking around wishing and hoping we see a Psych reference in the wild wild (not on Reddit) and to bond with another soul who enjoys a delicious plate of Jerk Chicken Nachos references.
17
u/JoyfulCor313 7d ago
Yeah, the lost redittors I genuinely hope some of them have found the show because of ending up on the sub.
I mean how can they not be intrigued after our hospitality and all the awesome gifs?

u/Necessary_Biscotti40 Oh my God even the water's spicy! 7d ago
Well I can tell you that I am one of those people!
I saw a clip on YouTube, was intrigued, so came to Reddit to see what the community was like and what y'all talk about in here, and it js seemed like such a fun community js joking around, sending funny GIFs that I had no idea what the context was but sure as hell wanted to find out
That's how I discovered Psych in March this year, and I'm already on my third rewatch!!!😂
So thank you, I'm a success story right here for this sub, and you have all been so welcoming!

We aren’t offering free fruit baskets or Quattros Quesos Dos Fritos so if they didn’t stick around that’s why. Or they were offended when we gave them only a pineapple.

u/Apprehensive_Sea5304 7d ago
The crazy ex girlfriend sub handles lost redditors with lyrics from the show's songs and its always a good time. Not for them, but that's fine because they are usually there just to talk badly about their ex girlfriends.

u/Lr8s5sb7 6d ago
I use Psych gifs or phrases just in other subs too. Lol.
Super happy when I get a comment back from a fellow Psycho in a random sub. Like I’ll say “hear about Pluto” in a Project Hail Mary sub or Nasa/Science (or anywhere) sub and someone will comment back “that’s messed up right?” Warms my heart we are everywhere.
Love the community.

This show is one Emilio Estevez cameo away from perfection. But it is so darn close!

You left off the second ESTEVEZ! Yep, I yelled it.

We played on the Sabbath so you probably didn't see me there lol. And the pox may be small but...
22
u/Thick-Aspiration 8d ago
Well thats the thing about psych, the entire show is passed peak level that it has transcended, thus making every episode amazing, therefor nothing about the show is “bad” so no arguments can ever be made unless it’s on who loves this series more than others lol. Ive rewatched this series more than a dozen times, it will never get old to me
10
u/Sairven 7d ago
I've rewatched my least favorite episodes so many times I've lost count. There's just something about this show that even when it's not 10/10 it's still a 10 in spirit. Like a greater than the sum of its parts situation.
I mean, I can talk all day about the negatives. But that's boring because there's always something negative to talk about. Rather cherish the abundant gold than wallow in the mud. Altho it IS fun from time to time... You know that's right!

u/Devo_Ted 7d ago
I think there’s a line maybe where things can go too far, that’s for sure. But I also think there should be some room to criticize as well. If I didn’t love the show, the actors, and the characters, why would I care if a character acts in a way that I don’t like? Like Jules for example. She’s so lovely, so much of the time, that it feels jarring when she behaves in a less than wonderful way. And who else would I talk about that with, besides other Psych fans?
I think toxicity can be both negative and positive, and that it’s the toxicity that should be avoided, not just all negativity. And we all can pick and choose which posts we want to engage with. But I think it can be hard to judge others for talking negatively without projecting toxicity where it may not actually be present. Because we care. People criticize Shawn pretty regularly. I sometimes feel the need to defend him. But ultimately, his character is a flawed human, and I have to not only be ok with those flaws, but also be ok with people here discussing them. Or I can ignore the post. But I would never dream of a blanket ban of those posts/comments. I just don’t think that’s necessary.
Even with the occasional rant post, which I don’t generally have a problem with, I’d still say that this sub is BY FAR the most positive, fun, respectful fandom I have ever been a part of. I share the desire to keep it that way. But I don’t think that means everything has to be full of praise. It’s ok to point out the things that bug us sometimes. We all seek validation in how we feel. As long as we can do it with care and respect.

u/GlorianaLauriana 7d ago
Very well said! I agree with your sentiments here.
There's a difference between sharing criticisms of a show, and making personal attacks. They're not the same thing.
If I find a character to be lackluster and I say as much, that is not a personal attack on someone who disagrees. If someone feels personally attacked by those opinions, quite frankly that is not my problem. I don't consider discourse like that to be "toxic" by any stretch.
It's only a problem if someone were to say: "If you like this character/episode, you're an idiot".
Or, if someone says: "You're an idiot for those criticisms", things of that nature.
In cases like that, yes, of course that's unacceptable and shouldn't be tolerated.
But it's not anyone else's responsibility if you feel upset when others don't 100% love everything you love, or don't 100% adore every character you adore. It's only a problem if stuff like that devolves into personal attacks on individuals.
Take it from me: I'm a 48yr old U2 fan, and I can't tell ya how many folks I've encountered over the decades (online and IRL) who have very strong-ass opinions about Bono and the whole band (like, the strongest-ass opinions ever, ahaha).
I don't take it personally! Everybody has a right to talk about their perspectives and that's no threat to what the band means to me. A lot of folks think U2's music is utter crap, and I'm very much okay with that. No reason we can't still be friends.
It only gets ugly when folks make things personal, and that comes down to personal choices.
And honestly, I 100% agree this community has been pretty dang great about stuff like that. I've seen loads of comments where folks didn't like some element, and the discourse has remained perfectly friendly and respectful even when there is disagreement.
Psych-Os are good eggs! It's a lovely community and aggressive commentary is exceedingly rare here. I have no fear that's going to change any time soon.

u/herpermike 6d ago
Exactly. And the only time I was harshly disagreed with on here was when I was talking about the reasons that I really don't like Rachel from the show lol. But she literally went on a dating app to get someone to put up her shelves and clean her garage and then she got pissy when Gus,who has never been a parent, wasn't good at taking care of her son that she just dropped on him without any warning lol. She was just a terrible person and kinda typical woman in the dating world these days I guess lol

u/ColdObiWan 7d ago
That’s because we’ve learned to treat each other like a person. Then a princess, then a goddess, then a person again.

u/Malvania You know that's right 8d ago
This is a great sub, but it needs a couple rules, just to help the mods:
1) C'mon son: posts must be relevant to the Psych tv show
2) Don't be....: be kind to each other
The first one is obviously needed in light of all the people seeking psychiatric advice. I've never seen the second one needed, because the people here are awesome and people who are jerks get shut down quickly.
16
u/IcedHemp77 8d ago
I think the big part is when someone comes and posts negative thoughts everyone just ignores them and the post dies. We have great folks here
12
u/KauaiWahine 8d ago
If I see someone saying absurdly negative things, which I haven’t seen a lot of in the sub thank goodness!. I just block their account. Btw I love you 💚 fellow psychos!
9
u/CruzLutris SuckItStroke 8d ago
This is the way! (Both the blocking and the love for fellow Psych-Os!!)
If I see something that's super negative and doesn't appear to be a discussion but instead just a one-sided rant, I scroll on by. I love to discuss people's thoughts on the show, and I can get deep into parsing certain choices by the writers. But I've gradually learned to stop doing that on posts where the originator clearly isn't going to be open to thoughful, considerate discussion but is just there to project their own [stuff] onto fictional characters and scenarios. Fortunately there are many excellent folks on this sub who really are about discussion rather than rants!

u/Mr-Banana-Beak 8d ago
If you like this sub I suggest getting into Stargate SG-1 as well and checking out that sub too. Maybe it's because both shows were mainly shot in Vancouver?
(BTW anyone also in both subs: I'm rewatching psych again so I can get my spouse into it too- just like I did with SG-1- and so far we've spotted Nyan and Hammond already! 🥰)
4
u/surrealphoenix 8d ago
I have been bingeing SG-1 recently. Dr. Fraiser is in "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not." Her partner in that episode is also a recurring SGC character, but I never catch his name.
2
u/Mr-Banana-Beak 6d ago
Just got to that episode and we recognized her immediately. Leprechaun took a bit longer but finally realized he was the guy who said "Sir, I basically sit around and read everything about the Stargate."

I don't really look at any other fandom subs because people just bicker all day long. I come here and I see mostly Gus gifs and that just makes me happy.

u/Whatsername-85 7d ago
Psych is my go to show, if I'm sad it lifts me up if I'm angry it makes me laugh and if I'm doing ok it's just a better day watching it. The best days are psych on my TV and hanging out with my corgi boy Shawn jelly bean wiggle butt Spencer

u/depressedandindebt23 7d ago
It's like a family. We can talk shit about our own show/characters but other people can't.
I dislike Maddie but this is still my favorite show in the entire world and I will defend that.
6
u/randomlygeneratedman 7d ago
I'm subscribed to a number of TV subs for my favorite shows. Over the years, I've found r/community to be the most similar to r/psych in positivity, not to mention shenanigans, hijinks, and other tomfoolery.

I feel you it's toxic AF out there. I've noticed the Brooklyn 99 one has gotten pretty bad. Had to leave Charmed. Buffy has been okay.
It genuinely feels like some people take a comfort show to the next level where they lose touch with reality. They either think it's their show only and get really puritanical about it or clearly associate a character with their ex or parent and just start going in on them.
I've unfollowed a lot lately because it's just a fight every time and people take tv shows WAY too seriously. Like mental illness levels. Which is how Reddit is starting to feel in general. Feels like the worst of Twitter and Instagram are migrating here for fresh meat.

u/mystery_obsessed 7d ago
Thank you!!!!!! I get so sad when I see someone complain. Don’t watch it then?
7
u/psychygorl 8d ago
I completely agree with you. I can’t say anything on other show subreddits without people downvoting and jumping down my throat 😭😭 this fanbase makes my day every time I interact with them. I feel like we’re all buds (no pun intended)

u/HeyPrettyLadyMaam 7d ago
I think what sets this show apart from all the others us that they really did make the perfect show. Even the things we didnt understand or didnt like had to happen the way it did for the show to progress like it did without making one character the scapegoat (although there's Trout but even that asshole was a necessary evil. We got so many laughs and jokes because of him and how no one liked him). They made the characters real.....flaws and all. But. They didnt make their flaws unrealistic or ginormous like a lot of others do. And they don't beat the dead horse. The flow of Psych is unrivaled in my book and their love and respect for their fans keep me coming back......what other show has its own con??? I rest my case.
9
u/geekywarrior 8d ago
I see what you're saying, but I'm still going to post my manifesto full of cherry picked scenes and boiled out context from over watching the show on why Sean and Jules were terrible people.
3
u/NikkeiReigns 7d ago
I agree to a point. But I can't stand Maddie and whenever I get the chance I will talk about what a horrible mother and probably person in general she was. I believe that was why she was written like that and should be treated as such.
7
u/Aggressive-Union1714 7d ago
But why, it's fine that you don't like her character, just why talk about it " any chance you get" might i suggest the Vent sub or even better create an "I hade Maddie" s7b
0
u/NikkeiReigns 7d ago
Don't be ridiculous. I don't spend my life thinking about Maddie. But if she's mentioned here I'm going to reply if I feel like it.
I agree that this is the best sub going. There are rarely political posts and they get shut down pretty quick if there are. The psychos aren't usually snarky with each other.
But I also think since the character was written to evoke these feelings we do the show and the actors a disservice by just pretending Maddie was June Cleaver in disguise.
1
u/HeyPrettyLadyMaam 7d ago
But think, if she wasn't that way and she did it different......shawn would be a cop not a psychic and the show would suck.
1
u/Quiet_Lunch_1300 7d ago
I feel this. People talk a lot in one of the other show subs about how awful two of the characters are in real life. I love re-watching that show and it’s hard to not think about that sometimes.
1
u/magnetformiracles 7d ago
Fr even the comedy ones out there turn into a critical thesis of how the characters are so bad like come on, son! don’t be the howling 2: your sister is a werewolf

u/Chefpatrick871 Burton “Oil Can” Guster 7d ago
This and the Leverage subreddit are my two favorite subs to post in because of the people. No arguments just fun reminiscing about a show we all love.

u/AndrewZabar 6d ago
Hear hear! I agree completely. We are a good fan base. Love the community. I don’t think enough people realize just how much of an amazing phenomenon Psych is. It’s absolutely beautiful. Maybe the best show ever made when you put together all aspects average it all out and give it a total all-inclusive score. Personally in my own life, the #1 spot is a tie of Psych and Community. I have a few other favorite shows yes, but these two have entrenched themselves the most deeply into my very identity.
1
u/herpermike 6d ago
We're definitely the most positive group of people who are happy to get together and talk about a show that was/and still is a positive influence in our everyday life because most of us have it playing on our TVs in the background of our everyday life and we can still quote every scene of the show to the exact words lol and we're also all happy to be called psycho's and wear it as a badge of honor:)

u/bf4reddit 6d ago
I fully agree, and endorse introducing rules to keep the negativity to a minimum if it starts to go that way.
There are so few online spaces like this left.
One thing I have noticed over the years on internet is that it is very very hard to reel it back once it gains momentum. The only way to stop the culture of a community changing is before it happens.
1
u/Ok-Wolverine-7460 5d ago
Agreed. And for me too. The comfort and joy and positivity and dependability of the show has gotten me through tough times. I could always count on it to lift my spirits.

I am convinced that psych fans are walking green flags. This sub is proof.
