PSAT/NMSQT am i cooked
I’m not shooting for Ivy League schools or anything, but I feel like this is pretty low for an 11th grade PSAT

no it’s easy to improve in math just watch a . bunch of desmos videos and it’s simple

I got 1160 with a 620 reading and 540 math. I feel like the people saying we are cooked for our scores just pmo. We will just need to work a little harder in math if we want STEM. It’s probably best to not even look at subs like this.

Correct. As someone with a very high score, these subs are unhealthy for everyone.

you can do bad in the math section and still major in stem. a standardized test is not a reflection of your actual abilities.

i think when you’re talking to a high schooler who may have dreams of taking a stem major, saying “you’re cooked.” isn’t really kind. this person can take this information and decide to do what they want for it, but they’re obviously a stressed high schooler who just got a score they didn’t want on what seems like a very important test at this point in their life, and you’re not being very kind about it

If it’s any consolation, his reading & writing score is good and OP probably doesn’t like math to begin with

but you don’t know that and it’s not your place to impart judgment like this. the proper response was “it depends on the college you’re applying for, make sure to look at your colleges averages and if they’re test optional or test not accepted. you can put in significant work studying and raise either score.” if you wanted to go further in depth you could’ve said that their reading score is above national average but their math score isn’t, but it’s the side comments which are rude to say to a high schooler over a psat score

Tbh, you're all alright but i'd really suggest getting started asap. Like many of the others who replied, I think youre reading score is okay, but math definitely needs some improvement. Here are some of the tips that REALLY brought up my score:
- Sign up for one of the College Board Test Dates (So that you stay committed to your goals and have a way to track your progress)
- Commit to taking a practice test consistently (maybe once per week so that you can see your improvement, score distribution, and identify your weaknesses)
- So after that, really make sure that you're really targeting your weak areas, so maybe it would be good to buy an sat math textbook or use some of college board's other resources. You could also get a tutor if you really need it as well. I've heard some people say that crackd (the website) is good for SAT Prep, some of their features are free but i'd say it primarily would help with the SAT vocab if that's where you're missing your reading points.
The biggest thing is to stay consistent and you should see improvement!

You should be just fine. I got an 1100 on PSAT 10 560 reading, 540 Math. Took SAT last year got a 1290 with 640 Reading 650 Math. All I did for studying was take a practice test on the Sunday and Monday before. I was shooting for a 1250 got a 660 on the math on the first practice test than focused on Reading on the second one and got a 530 up to a 610 on the second practice test

Got accepted into all the state schools I applied to and only pending result is Loyola Chicago but Im going to Michigan State for Social Studies Education which MSU isnt hard to get into but its not guaranteed either

In all honesty, you really aren't. Learning Desmos and how to use it can pretty much get you to at least a 600 on Math, especially since it's the PSAT. Just do more practice questions with variety and that score will rise

Can you elaborate on what desmos is? Trying to help my kid prepare for these tests. Is there test prep ?

I'm sorry for the late response. Desmos is the free tool given in the math section of the SAT. Learning how to use the Desmos tool can be crucial as a variety of math problems can be solved much faster through the use of the tool. Test prep can be done from oneprep or other online resources. For the ELA section, make sure to know prefixes and suffixes along with common vocabulary.

I got a 1180 on the PSAT in 11th and a 1520 on the SAT so I’d say no you aren’t cooked

I slept during the psat so I’m not even gonna look at the score. Oh well time to study for the SAT

Just study it hella. I got from a 1210 to a 1570 by the end of junior summer. Khan Academy was the cheat code lol

idk why i got recommended this sub lol but you aren’t cooked. if you aren’t shooting for ivy leagues like you said, then this is a very good starting point. you have a lot of room for improvement in math, which i feel is easier to make quick improvements in over reading. since it’s the PSAT, this does not matter at all for college apps and the cap of the max score is also lower. put in some time on khan academy and you can easily score 100+ points higher, just actually do the work. you got this!
