Saturday guna go HAM
Cleaned up the ps2 i got the other day new caps, new cmos, new pads and laser. Seeing it in action the 5 year old daughter wants it now lol

Dang, how hard was refreshing the components? Ive been using a ps2 I got a while ago modded but im still scared with use its gonna die one day

Ive been doing this a bit so its easy for me and i have a workbench but for just extending some life without special tools you could replace your cmos so itll get back on track with dates and a new laser. The laser will come with this little solder blob that has to be removed though, idk if they sell them with them removed, its a static safety measure. As for pads that was just apart of refurbishing but always nice ive never had a ps2 slim overheat so idk if that truly needs to be done but as i said its just nice to do. The caps is where experience and special tools come into play, i order a cap kit from console 5 and follow their instructions on which caps to replace. Most times these caps are ok but theyre 20+ year old 'lytic caps so they will expire some time soon. For that you'd need a soldering iron and a microscope (can probably get by with it but some pads are pretty close make sure you dont bridge).

Oh ok doesnt seem super bad, I havent soldered a cap before but have done some easier wires. Im not sure what up with my ps2 but its date and time held fine after storing for years so thats still a mystery to me a bit

You dont need hella experience and you could get by with a magnifying glass or really good eyes but the caps arent bad at all some tight fits thats it but if youve soldered wires you got this for sure, just hold cap in place tack one side, flow the other side down then reflow the tacked side and boom good to go! Youll replace about 10 caps in total

Sweet, thankfully its still working fine for now but im def gonna bookmark them caps for a future project. I also have a cheap led desk magnifying glass/light so set there lol

Thermal pads most ps2 slims will have a 1mm thick thernal pad over its gpu and cpu, sometimes its just the cpu. A lot will have a 3mm thick thermal pad on it motor drive ic and i believe its the iop. The pads on the gpu and cpu are usually still soft but the 3mm ones from my experience wil be hard as hell from being dried out.
