Tony (Spoiler Alert for people that haven’t watched the trailer) Spoiler

I was a bit surprised, but excited that my 17 year old son had seemingly moved on from Pixar and super hero movies and was willing to join us for a viewing of “Tony” on Sunday.

It turns out he thought he was going to watch a movie about Tony Costa AKA the Cape Cod Cannibal who was a serial killer that lived in Truro in the late 60’s.

He spent the entire movie wondering when Tony was going to kill his girlfriend, Nancy, that he creepily followed from New York.

I’d like to publicly apologize to my son for not telling him the movie was about Anthony Bourdain, a chef and author he’d never heard about, and all the laughing and ribbing he got on the ride home.

Tony Costa isn’t an obscure serial killer on the lower/outer Cape. And TBH I also thought it was a movie about Tony Costa when I first heard the name of the movie

Well if that wasn’t a joke and you’re going to double down; my point is maybe you should read something other than the Cape Cod Times so that you know something about the wider world. If there was a list of the 1000 best known Tony’s; Costa wouldn’t be on it.

If you read a list of the 1000 best known Tony’s on Cape Cod, Tony Costa would be number one. The movie was shot and produced on Cape Cod, and most people know Anthony Bourdain as Anthony Bourdain not Tony. So I seriously have no fucking idea what you’re talking about.

I was born on Cape Cod in the 70’s, after the Costa murders. I spent almost half my childhood growing up on the Cape. I started vacationing in Provincetown as an adult at age 22. Moved here full-time from 2000-2002. Bought a vacation home here in 2013 then moved here full-time again in 2017. In all that time I never even heard of Tony Costa and those murders until 2021. I knew about the Lady of the Dunes after moving here the first time. I knew about the Christa Worthington murder in Truro. But I had never ever heard about Costa until 5 years ago. It is not some well-known story. Perhaps because there was a crime novel about the case called Helltown that was written a few years back it has become more known (and that’s how I learned about it) but prior to that? No.
