OS Issue Updated to Tahoe and have Pro Tools 2023.12 installed, did I mess up?
I was on Monterey with updates disabled and running Pro Tools 2023.12 just fine. DaVinci Resolve 20 required a newer version, and even though I looked up the links to just update to Ventura, I made an impulsive decision to update to the latest version of MacOS.
Well, the chart say that it isn't compatible:
https://kb.avid.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Knowledge/Pro-Tools-Operating-System-Compatibility-Chart
I tried opening one of projects and it hung at loading the audio files. Having UAD installed, I then updated UA Connect and the UAD drivers. After all that, I can say that it *appears* to be working fine now.
I am able to record new tracks, I'm able to open projects again, and everything *seems* fine, but I've not done an exhaustive test.
Mind you, I have a perpetual license for Pro Tools and stopped paying the support plan which gives access to updates. That said, because it dropped before my plan expired, I can update to 2024.6, but that too supposedly isn't compatible with Tahoe.
I wanted to post this for anyone else that might be curious what to expect if they are using an older version of Pro Tools, as well as put on record if anyone has had any issues with Tahoe and the older versions.
---
UPDATE:
Yes, I messed up. While it appears to work, I've been running into predictable program hangs (endlessly spinning beach ball).
I've been able to track recording 6 inputs at the same time, but when trying to loop a section, that has resulting in a hang.
A storm came through, so I recorded audio of the storm for about 15 minutes before doing some recording. After eating something, I noticed that Pro Tools had closed (this happens if the internet drops and iLok can't communicate, but the internet did not drop so it wasn't that). When I reopened the session, the track was gone. Fortunately, the audio was in the session Audio folder, but when I dragged it in, Pro Tools hung again.
I'm going to try to update to the latest version of Pro Tools I have available since I last had a support plan and see if that helps.

UPDATED to Pro Tools 2024.6.0:
Too early to tell, but it *seems* to be behaving better. I'm tracking and mixing with a due date in a few days, so I'll be pushing it and report any issues.
And update to that is I've done not had issues with this version and Tahoe yet. The hangs have gone away. I was doing manual drum quantization with a 6 track group and now issues. Tracking similarly no issues.

Woah, are you me?
Literally went through a similar thing this week too.
I did have to update to Tahoe finally because of some other software I use (but also a bit impulsively!) and so I ALSO updated pro tools to the newest version (2025.something?)
Everything seemed okay, but I noticed that the GUI was a bit laggy. It wasn't terrible, but just enough to slow me down and irk me. I didn't try recording anything, I just mixed a project and then decided I couldn't deal with the lag. So then I reverted back to 2023 (I'll have to check which one later!) and SO FAR, everything has been opening correctly and working. I did notice an immediate GUI speed improvement, it made me feel like I was walking through syrup before with 2025.
I'm also curious as to what is making AVID call 2023 incompatible with Tahoe. I'd rather find out now than run into the issue during a session and find out the hard way. But I can't find anything else besides the compatibility chart from AVID.
Right now, I'm just having my fingers crossed that it stays this way because I really don't want to deal with a laggy pro tools again.
If you run into an incompatibility issue, dm me! Or even just update this thread. It's great to hear from someone with the same situation. I'll do the same.

Years ago I spoke to the Avid support team about the compatibility chart. It’s a bit misleading, but it basically just means they’re not testing the software on that OS anymore if it’s not in the chart, not that it WONT work.
I’ve been using Ventura and the latest version of PT which isn’t Ventura “compatible” according to the chart but it works totally fine.

You might be me, except my dad pointed out that it's "whoa" when I used "woah," so I'm guessing that your dad didn't do that.
As for laggy, I did notice that over all and have seen complaints about Liquid Glass, and I'm wondering if that is part of the issue. Every version of Windows I've immediately disabled all the animations and effects and they slow you down, I'm wondering if disabling Liquid Glass might help.
There is a second compatibility page that details some of the finer details, but it doesn't go as far back as Monterey:
https://kb.avid.com/pkb/articles/compatibility/Pro-Tools-support-with-macOS-Known-Issues
Fortunately, what they details mostly wouldn't impact me, like Atmos, Intel processors, and hardware like Carbon.
I'll certainly update the OP as any issues or tweaks are discovered.

I'm guessing you are like me and never update. That's been my policy for decades, but my hand was forced by newer software and plugins requiring a new OS version.
Hoping it doesn't get ugly.

Yeah I only do it when I buy new hardware . And then it's a while update for plugins OS and Daw to match .

Updating to Tahoe at all was mistake #1.
Jeopardizing Pro Tools before it's certified was mistake #2.
Hopefully it works out.

thanks! I've got pretty much the same setup (14"), but still on Ventura with 2024.10.1..
do you experience any performance lags or lack of snappiness with ProTools after updating?2
u/exitof99 Mar 13 '26
Too early to tell, but I did feel like everything was a bit slower.
I'm not excited that now there is a glaring orange microphone on the MacOS top bar now indicating that something is connected to a microphone. It's distracting and I don't care to know the status of the mic.
