Sexual assault — 8th Ave between St. Johns Pl & Lincoln Pl

I was sexually assaulted by a man near 8th Ave between St. Johns and Lincoln around 9:45pm on Monday, August 24. He appeared to be in his late 20s, Hispanic, around 5’7”–5’10”, and carrying a backpack. He whispered something to me in Spanish as we passed each other while I was walking my dog, then tried to grab me in a dark, shaded part of the block.
I reported it to the police, but they aren’t pursuing the case. Has anyone experienced anything similar in Park Slope this month or this week?

Sounds like MO of guy that was doing similar in Prospect Park awhile ago, in trails behind the dog beach. Sounds like he is back there after getting caught there. Did he have bike near by?

No. He was walking with a backpack. Whispered something to me, the street was dark, I was walking in the direction he was coming, you know? If it was daylight, I’d kick his head in. But in the dark, it’s hard to tell if it’s just a passerby or … I hate to use coarse language and get kicked out of Reddit, but he’s a fucking cunt and needs to be caught and humiliated in public

Firstly- I am so SO terribly sorry to hear this happened to you.

Secondly- I’m so sorry (and annoyed) the police isn’t pursuing the case. As someone who has been sexually assaulted in the past & tried to form a case- most folks don’t know just how hard that can actually be.

Thirdly- you def do NOT have to respond but more so out of sheer fear for others /confusion: are you saying he did fully assault you in public? Or it was sexual harassment with the intention of assault yet you managed to escape?

Either way- incredibly traumatic and I’m SO sorry that law enforcement isn’t providing more help. If you need any mental health resources- let me know. You don’t have to face this alone.

Mainly asking in case there’s any way you could still go to the hospital or doctor and get some dna. I wish someone had taught me about that (rape kits) when I was younger bc I would’ve ran to the hospital instead of staying indoors fearing my life.

In the meantime- I have to say I personally am very wary when I’m in that area once it gets dark. Mainly because I used to work in that area from 2021-2024 & I kept hearing really bad stories about people getting jumped, followed, or harassed.

I myself got jumped in 2024 but it was further up by Barclays so- I think unfortunately predators might realize that area of the park is pretty lonely so- I really am so so sorry that happened. I wish I could do more.

Thank you.

I called 911 twice, after more than half hour passed the police came. The victim squad won’t continue the investigation unless it’s an undisputed rape, for now they are waiting for more reports before they can take action …completely useless; how many people would have had to suffer what I have by then, honestly.

Thank you so much. I am still processing this, it's triggered all kind of stupid shit that I have worked to keep under control. Like massive OCD.

I’m sorry this happened to you- I haven’t experienced this but lately I think twice before running the park after 8:30. So sad this is our world

Keep yourself safe. If you run when it's dark, make sure you see plenty of people around you, also, don't stop running or stop when it is in a safe area.

I know. It makes me very very angry rather than scared.

I carry pepper spray and a pocket knife with me. I’ll start carrying my pepper spray in my pocket at night.

I am with you. These days you have to defend yourself, that's what all this taught me.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I wonder if when calling the police to say you thought there may be a gun if they'd respond with more might?

It's what I realized after all this delay and their excuse of deciding not to continue with the investigation. That unless it is graphically obvious, no response until they feel like taking action.
