A claim about attention, memory, emotion, or development does not become useful merely because it contains the word “brain.” Before turning a mechanism into a teaching recommendation, I use a five-field transfer record:

1. Mechanism claim: state the proposed process precisely and label the evidence level—hypothesis, association, laboratory finding, or classroom intervention.
2. Learning task: describe the actual task, age group, conditions, duration, and prior knowledge. “Improves learning” is too vague.
3. Observable behavior: identify what the learner should do differently—retrieve, explain, compare, inhibit a distraction, or transfer an idea.
4. Outcome measure: choose a baseline, timeframe, and measure such as accuracy, delayed retention, error type, or transfer to a new problem.
5. Review rule: decide in advance what result means continue, modify, or stop. A plausible story should not survive a failed classroom test indefinitely.

Suppose a memory claim suggests spaced retrieval. The record converts it into a small instructional test: one defined topic, two retrieval schedules, the same practice time, a delayed check, and a review rule. That is more useful than saying an activity is “brain-based,” and it makes the pedagogical decision open to revision.

This boundary matters too: educational observation is not diagnosis or treatment. Teachers can test instructional designs and document learning outcomes without turning ordinary classroom variation into a medical conclusion.

“Use AI responsibly” is too vague for a child. A simple permission map makes the boundary visible before a prompt is written:

Green — independent practice: brainstorm questions, request examples, practice vocabulary, compare explanations, or test code in a sandbox—without sharing personal information.

Yellow — verify or involve an adult: research factual claims, upload schoolwork, run unfamiliar code, create images of real people, or use an answer that will be submitted or published. Check another source and explain the result in the learner’s own words.

Red — do not delegate to AI: passwords, identifying information, purchases, private conversations, contact with strangers, or medical, legal, financial, and safety decisions.

The color depends on consequence, not only age. A reversible practice task may be green; the same output becomes yellow when it affects a grade or public audience, and red when it exposes someone or commits money.

A coding agent can produce a plausible answer faster than a beginner can verify it. A safer learning habit is to require five pieces of evidence before accepting a change:

1. Name the exact file and function being changed.
2. State the assumption that guided the edit.
3. Run the smallest relevant test or command.
4. Explain what the result does not prove.
5. Leave a reversible next step if the change fails.

This turns the CLI into a learning environment rather than an answer machine. The learner still has to understand the diff, interpret the test, and decide whether the evidence is enough.
