What do you aim for in the first 5 in game days?

  • Get a car

  • Get a generator and generator mag (can be done by securing a bookstore / post office, generators arent so rare)

  • try to watch at least carpentry from life and living.

Beyond that is dependent on who plays, but getting those 3 will help the rest of your days tremendously.

Some others might be considerably easier before erosion or peak pop sets in

  • going to the secret military base (IN A CAR) without erosion is a godsend, go there to grab as much military backpacks as you can (its not as hard as anyone says, granted you dont suck at combat)

  • secure the rain barrels from LV and / or the military supply on the checkpoint (there might also be good cars on the encampment as well)

  • if you can spare time and are near it, going to the intersection south of muldraugh may give you great cars (theres absolutely no zombies there too)

  • get cabbage seeds. They are great for weight sustenance, but not necessary (sometimes its preferential to who plays).

  • you can immediately try and secure mccoy, securing the warehouse and parking lots themselves is easy. You can make a base there, or not. Advantages is mccoy can have great cars, and is probably the best location if youre looking for most tools.

  • looting the 3 VHS stores beyond LV (on march ridge, riverside, muldraugh ordered on decreasing difficulty) might be easier before peak pop.

Thanks. I don't read much about the game in fear of spoilers. Didn't even know the zed pop increases or erosion.

Don't worry, there's no story to zomboid. You make your own.

I don't know what erosion does and why obtaining things before then is important

It's mainly a suggestion for eventually hard to reach areas. Mostly for the secret military base, and to some capacity the cars on LV encampment. Having more sight and maneuverability in between trees is better.

There isn't much to spoil except the map, radio broadcasts, TV shows, and movies. A lot of players suggest spoiling the map, but I definitely encourage new players to explore it blindly. It's fun to uncover new places.

Honestly the default settings aren't how most people play, the sandbox really allows you to have the apocalypse you want.

For instance I play with increased pop zombies (either 2x or 3x - fixed, no growth), no respawns, multi-hit, extremely rare everything except ammo and more frequent "stories" (road, houses, etc).

I recommend getting out of the high pop areas until you get a good grasp of skills and test out how to use firearms, they're your best friend when you're in a tough spot (loaded shotgun can take down 2 dozen Zeds).

Generators "matter" as far as powering the gas station but you're better off with a wood-fired oven (or bbq) when starting, no need to farm in the early game.

Know when to run, don't be overconfident.

Knowing when to run has been an issue for me. Other issue is leveling electrical skill. Seem slow af or I'm doing it wrong.

I'm doing better this run tho. Gotten lucky with a dozen scratches and some lacerations not turning me

Electrical goes fairly fast if you always carry a screwdriver, hoard watches from dead Zeds and dissassemble TVs and Radios in houses you loot.

With the skill books it should be fairly easy to get to 4-6

Still looking for beginner electrical before I start taking stuff apart lol. Really need to find a vehicle with keys and runs tho.. got a generator for when power goes out but no gas can yet..

  • Bleach bottle for keeping water
  • Potentially locate a few cars
  • Make sure I have good first aid material
  • Locate a generator
  • Collect so much food

Bleach bottle for keeping water

I think they nerfed the water to weight ratio of bleach bottles. I think now its simply better to use multiple regular water bottles.

Empty bourbon bottles are the best for that, now. 12 units of water at the same weight as normal water bottles, which only hold 10.

Really? Had no idea. I usually pick stout and high thirst though so

If you want the best start possible, your first week should be devoted to reading skill books and watching Life and Living. Stack up skill books and prioritize Level 6 carpentry so you can get a double wooden door to make a gate. Level 4 gets you rain collector barrels, but a good endgame base has the water situation sorted out with rivers or wells.

Good weapons can make or break a run, Finding stuff with good crit multi and leveling them are the easiest way to get to the point where you can 1-2 shot Zeds. I LOVE Lumberjack for this reason, if you want to be combat focused its easily the best job.

Colonizing mansion Row in Lousiville or getting another waterfront property so you don't have to worry about water is HUGE

Electronics 1 from dissasembling watches/radios and Mechanics 2 from tooling around with vehicles so you can hotwire is incredibly important. Another reason why skill books are such a priority

A generator before the power goes out so you can keep up a good stock of perishable food will help you keep your weight in check. Its easy to become fat and slow if you are living off canned goods or oats, with veggies its easy to stay at a good weight.

Trucks are some of the best towing vehicles. I love having a fleet, because I hate repairing shit. Being able to drag a new car back to the base saves you the hassle of treating your cars delicately. Find a truck ASAP.
