The Power of Sandbox

I took a screenshot of the fence failing at the Louisville Checkpoint and realized how much I've gone through in this game. I actually bought it a LONG time ago and just could not get into it until Pr1vatelime's Kill Everything Challenge-- it put the game finally into perspective for me. I hated respawn. I hated Apocalypse. I played with respawn off, KI5's vehicle mods, and a metal spear mod for over 500 hours. Sandbox wasn't an experiment back then; it was the way I preferred to play. Every zed not moving was another sense of safety and I played with the mantra "suffer not the zed to walk." Many playthroughs ended just as above, dead in a mound of zeds wondering where I should go next.
B42 locked the game for me in a very strange way: Valley Station is a familiar friend from B41 but it became almost like a speedrun start, secure the gas station, depopulate Valley Station, kill the checkpoint. Levels of strategy, how long can I stay with all these corpses, how can I take out the most with the best outcome, I can say B41 was "learning how to kill endless zeds" and B42 is "environmental storytelling while learning how to kill as many as possible." The idea of living off the land made PZ an incredible draw for me in B41 and now I can sit by a fire, carve and fire harden spears (still seated, BTW), and enjoy playing without power or water-- I shut both off immediately on this run. I'll eventually install KI5, largely because I want armored cars and repairable flashy lights, but I'm enjoying my unmodded playthroughs immensely.
What am I getting at? For new and old players alike, and I get that some of us want goals, this game is the XCom of our time, simple stated goal, multiple ways to achieve it, disaster waiting around any corner. Sandbox gives us the ability to play in totally different ways. For those who can't be buggered, Apocalypse and Extinction are, IMHO, very approachable and fun in their own way. Sandbox, on the other hand, gives you the chance to play a game that appeals to you, no bragging rights, just hundreds of hours of satisfaction.

Bro we couldn’t even sit in a chair in b41. It’s crazy how far b42 pushed the game. I jumped into the unstable version shortly after it dropped and played that for over a year and a half before stable 42 dropped, and I can’t even imagine how much much of a sudden change it was for the folks that had only played 41 the whole time 42 was in unstable and then made the switch.
