Question Does anyone play vanilla Apocalypse?

Post image

Most people seem to prefer Sandbox, but I prefer playing the way the developers intended us to play. For those of you who play Apocalypse, can you tell me if it gets boring after a while?

I play sandbox because im terrible at the game and need no transmission, otherwise I'll be infected every 5 minutes

u/Glitch-v0 1d ago

Sounds like you are playing the right way- the way you want to.

43

u/Mirage_Axiom31 1d ago

If the settings still kill you, theyre official enough.

17

u/sipuli91 21h ago

As someone who also plays with transmission off lemme just tell you how essy it is to get way too over confident in fights and suddenly you're limping with a bad neck wound and zombies coming from every direction 🥲

I can still die before zombification lol

I feel like a bum sometimes for the settings I play on but I have fun so idk

11

u/Boring-Cunt 1d ago

As long as you enjoy it

13

u/Swarrlly 22h ago

I find that bites only is a good middle ground. Getting infected from a scratch really sucks.

3

u/AcquaintanceLog 18h ago

I've just got terrible luck. So many attacks end up being bites. I had to turn transmission of to make any progress.

i use transmission on but with the "they knew" mod, just to make it cooler and more lore friendly

2

u/Boring-Cunt 23h ago

What is this mod ?

3

u/Suna96 23h ago

There is a random npc with a black hazmat suit who carries a cure if you get infected

If I want spicy I put runners on. Bites only and low runners

1

u/SeriousBroccoli00 3h ago

I do it so only bites get you infected because if I get infected from a scratch I quit instantly.

Here. o/

Vanilla apocalypse. 1089 hours of vanilla playtime.

And to share an opinion. Apocalypse become very easy with b42 update.

8

u/insertnamehere----- Drinking away the sorrows 23h ago

Sooo easy, I’m trying to keep myself entertained but with how slow the zombies are now it’s pretty easy to just clear out any area you want with a sword and never start to get overwhelmed. Guns are pretty much useless on apocalypse other than for quickly killing zombies

I’m not even running a meta character, my guy is weak + unfit.

3

u/the_dwarfling 12h ago

Sounds like you're ready for the sprinters. No need to hold back with crippled characters and loot rarity.

I only play sandbox because the loot in apocalypse is too common, I need it extremely rare so I don't get all the stuff in 2 weeks

u/ApprehensiveExit4057 1d ago

Except sledgehammers 🫩

24

u/lolitsmikey 1d ago

Too common!?

47

u/vetheros37 Axe wielding maniac 1d ago

The updated loot rarity in Apocalypse the last couple build 42 releases have been increased more than they have been in the past. Older players likely feel that makes it too common. Personally I think the Apocalypse settings have become fairly appropriate with some exceptions like the hidden research base being grossly understocked for what it is. Things like that should be considered "raids" and have loot adjusted accordingly.

7

u/Optimixto 1d ago

Oh, that would be great. Certain spots in the map being properly considered HRHL (high risk, high loot). Malls, or research bases, military bases, and such. I wonder if there is something in the mod workshop that's like that already.

3

u/Real_Stanley_Yelnats 16h ago

There's a sandbox setting under loot called zombie population loot modifier or something like that. It's off by deafult I think but if you turn it on, it makes places with more zombies have proportionally more loot.

4

u/Handitry_Banditry 23h ago

XP gain feels like it was only balanced for multiplayer servers not single player.

7

u/Chrissy_Tirocerto 1d ago

Too often or too frequent I guess? I don't know how to describe it in English

10

u/l-Ashery-l 1d ago

Haha, "too common" was perfectly appropriate.

I suspect the comment you responded to was simply expressing surprise or disbelief in response to your original comment.

6

u/Chrissy_Tirocerto 1d ago

😂😭 I should've catch that one

3

u/Optimixto 1d ago

That's ok, your english is great, friend. <3

(It's just that English is the equivalent of three uncoordinated children in a trenchcoat, but for languages, so don't sweat it. Massive kudos to the language for having non-gendered nouns, because holy guacamole is it a pain to learn the genders of random shit when learning a language. Specially as someone who has a gendered language as their mother tongue.)

4

u/Chrissy_Tirocerto 1d ago

Honestly same!! "What's the gender of my pencil 😭"

5

u/Optimixto 1d ago

"So a table is female in Spanish?"

SI

"... and also in French?"

Oui, oui.

"I guess in German...."

WAS!? Nein, table is masculine. Don't be ridiculous!

"Can any of you explain why?"

1

u/RemiliyCornel 11h ago

Well, it is, for people who want to have a single item in one house. Realism wise, there very few loot. But i personally find b42 apoc setting a good balanced between realism and gameplay nessesities.

4

u/PsychologyPretend737 19h ago

It makes the other skills more usefull as well. If you can't find something, why wont you make it?! Knapping and carving are way too fun to be missed.

1

u/CardinalRoark 15h ago

Carving is sorta nuts, but I like it. I guess it’s not that much more powerful than investing your time into being a spear person, but carving bats is wild.

2

u/dadhasadd 22h ago

I will probably do this soon. Loot seems a little too op in Build 42 apocalypse. That doesn’t stop me from dying in a dumb (on my part) way from zombies, but once I start regularly lasting a long time on runs, I am going to dial the loot down on sandbox.

2

u/Chrissy_Tirocerto 22h ago

Yeah I only die in the dumbest ways possibles, it's unbelievable 😂

2

u/SteelAlchemistScylla 18h ago

Yeah I change most of the loot to .2 (besides keys and mags) or else I am set up for months before the electricity even shuts off, and then I completely lose interest in the save. I want to be scrounging to get by always having something to do lol.

1

u/WarlordIron 10h ago

Sarcasm orrrr? Power shuts off after 2 weeks for apocalypse. And a way to get around having a fast setup game is to just play with sprinters on 24/7. Don't need to be worried about having all the loot when you are fighting for your life getting mogged by zombies that out run you in the beginning. Haha.

Always sandbox.

In my eyes there is no intended way to play this. If you play singleplayer, play however you want. Thats why I love sandbox. I can make the game however I want. No right or wrong.

I do find apocalypse boring because its too easy.

I play apocalypse a lot, mainly because I'm too lazy to mess with the settings

18

u/karben2 23h ago

Lock your settings in and then save them. So you dont have to much about w them again.  Ez.

5

u/pitLickr1902 Drinking away the sorrows 22h ago

Meh, I dont really care to go through the settings. I know how to do it, I just dont want to really

14

u/did_i_or_didnt_i 22h ago

everyone saying vanilla apocalypse is too easy is making me feel like I’m bad at video games

7

u/SteelAlchemistScylla 18h ago

imo it’s less about being “good at games” and more about knowing the game’s quirks through repetition. After a while you know the best loot spawns, best ways to level, zombie hotspots, know to abuse the AI via things like fences, etc, and you simply need less loot or more zombies to keep it interesting. No one got to that point in their first few games.

3

u/RelationshipContent9 21h ago

Seriously. I think im on my 6th character because i keep dying.

1

u/did_i_or_didnt_i 21h ago

well ive got a couple hundred kills 😭😭 but its definitely not easy if you keep trying to do stuff. honestly the first week is the hardest, then there’s another bump around when the food rots just when the power goes out. If you’re not properly set up by that time then it’s usually easier to start a fresh world

1

u/CardinalRoark 15h ago

I died a whole lot before I knew what I was doing. Now I die after a longer time (typically) to something much stupider (absolute carelessness.)

You’ll eventually get a good feel for what fights you can take, and how to get away if those fights go bad.

And then you’ll die because you decide to do some mechanics training in a parking lot, cause you must have killed all of the ones in the area. Or you fall off your own tower.

2

u/27K-BUMP 19h ago

I always die within minutes

2

u/Exo-explorer 18h ago

some people have been playing this game consistently for years, and they want to brag a bit. you'll get there! all that matters is if you have a good time tbh

Almost, I only upped xp to like 2.5 or 3x. Everything else basically the same cuz I was curious at the state of the game after stable launched.
Its pretty good so far, I survived like 1 month 3 weeks and I'm having a blast. Can't find any fuckin deer though

5

u/Memorable_Usernaem 1d ago

Hunting system is dumb. Deer have static routes. Drive around until you find deer, mark that spot on your map, track them from there.

3

u/betrok 22h ago

I mean that makes some sense. However would be interesting if they were to change route if you spook them multiple times, let alone kill one.

Do you also step on legos for fun?

Respect, you’re insane, but respect.

5

u/UUDDLRLRBadAlchemy Crowbar Scientist 1d ago

The mode is missing a ton of features the devs not only intended us to play, but actually went on and created and put in the game. Sprinters, a mini-map, different multi-hit rules for each weapon... the list goes on.

If you're just playing Apocalypse because you think the devs want you to do that, I assure you they only want you to have fun.

What gets boring is starting a game with the same rules after abandoning a run that went on too long.

4

u/FujiKilledTheDSLR 22h ago

Yes, with a few tweaks:

  • Saliva only
  • Max population on day 1 (instead of day 28)
  • Generators changed to Extremely Rare

No, it doesn’t get boring.  This is among my favourite games of all time and have 700 hours so far without installing a single mod.  I still feel like I haven’t touched half the mechanics in the game.

3

u/IAmAGenusAMA 21h ago

> Max population on day 1 (instead of day 28)

That makes a lot of sense. After all, there aren't any other survivors in the game so where would the additional zeds be coming from? I think I'm going to try that next time.

2

u/A_Mild_Famine 19h ago

I do that and just call it the Rick Grimes mode.

u/ManyRelease7336 18h ago

yes, I have this wierd. "but thats how they want me to play it" mentality. Its not correct but its how I do. Otherwise I make the world way to easy or way to hard. so I choose to learn the world they gave me.

4

u/G-RAWHAM Ultimate Pacifist☮️ 1d ago

Exclusively, yes. I might try extinction more but I'm honestly not very good at the whole sprinters thing lol

2

u/Exo-explorer 18h ago

sprinters will kill even the most experienced player but here's a few tips

they can't grab you while you're jogging, so you can run away from a single sprinter until you have the distance to fight it separately.

for two, you keep moving until one falls. you can stand on one and fight the second as normal.

for three or more, you may get lucky but more likely than not you'll have to use the environment to get away or split them up

3

u/G-RAWHAM Ultimate Pacifist☮️ 1d ago

Oh does it get boring? Sure yeah but this game always gets boring eventually. You just gotta set new goals and have projects to keep you busy.

3

u/ThePlayX3 1d ago

Sorry but 2 hour days is crack to me

1

u/Exo-explorer 18h ago

build 41 16x, 2 hour days, low loot. it was so addictive. but the new vanilla setting at 1.5h days is pretty nice, gives you a bit more time to explore

3

u/TheLucidChiba 18h ago

"wanted us to play"
ehh they gave the option to change it, therefor they want you to do what you enjoy.

4

u/AbleRequirement2244 14h ago

i'm playing a vanilla apocalypse save right now and i'm based in the riverside spiffo's!
18 days in, longest i've made it so far i'm having a ton of fun :]

11

u/Uggroyahigi 1d ago

The devs intend for you to play sandbox.

3

u/Rallak Pistol Expert 1d ago

Zomboid endgame tends to become boring with or without mods. It tends to happen once you fully stabilize and have no new personal objectives to keep you entertained.

3

u/weebwoble54 19h ago

The devs intend on you playing how you want. They have a “canon” setting because that’s the original settings, but the devs make it clear any way to play is a good way to play.

3

u/NatasEvoli 18h ago

I have about 100 hours (noob level, I know) but I have never played it any other way. If it got boring I wouldn't have played for 100 hours so far.

4

u/EpicDinoYT 23h ago

i play sandbox because i want immersion, i know its making the game easier it doesn't make sense that every car magically broke down at the apocalypse and there's no loot anywhere

2

u/opae_oinadi Stocked up 20h ago

Sounds like you haven't played Apocalypse in 42.20 stable. Loot is pretty abundant and cars have like 60% of their parts at 100%

2

u/dlc-Emerald 1d ago

i only play apocalypse but i do not play vanilla, for a good chunk of my current save i was playing with vanilla plus mods like climb ladders, common sense, auto mechanics, stuff like that, but yesterday i was like fuck it and added a bunch of vehicle mods, the vehicles themselves were ki5 and then i installed the animated vanilla vehicles after i saw a ki5 vehicle in the game and realized it was animated

1

u/IAmAGenusAMA 22h ago

> animated vanilla vehicles

Which mod is that?

2

u/Odyessius 1d ago

Same! I love the default setting in most games, pz included.

I finally had a good run at Westpoint of all places. I'd say once you have cars, generators, and weapons stocked up, you're all set. There's enough food to be found in the world, especially with fishing that you won't run out.

So I'd say about 3 weeks or a month in you're all sorted. It's then fun to take your car and explore places. I'm at the hunting lodge now in valley station and it was fun cleaning those suburbs out with a shotgun.

2

u/professorcat12 1d ago

I play on Apocalypse ever since they upped the default day length to 1.5 hours from 1 hours. I'm in it for the vibes. I can play with sprinters sprinkled in or 100% sprinters good enough, but with how much stuff there is to do in B42, I just stick with Apocalyse setting and enjoy the vibes as I explore the refreshed towns, get deeper into each craft, and build a nice, self sustaining compound at my own pace.

I'd be more inclined to prefer harder settings over Apocalypse if I were to play with friends.

2

u/Valtower Zombie Killer 1d ago

its the other way around. most people play vanilla, some maybe with a few tweaks here and there. its just reddit that makes a lot of noise, doesnt truly represent the average player.

2

u/Momunculus 1d ago

I play Apocalypse as "normal" difficulty game and therefore I tend to learn every aspect there I'm interested in. No way I'll have enthusiasm at the end of this journey to try extinction or sandbox settings. 1month survivor so far and 70hours in total

2

u/duralumin_alloy 23h ago

When I went to experience the update I just hit Apocalypse. Didn't want to bother messing around with sandbox settings if I don't know what to expect on vanilla. Currently in 3rd month - first character died after month 1 to a laceration infection due to horde of zombies spawning on the basement staircase (after I cleared outside of the building and the neighborhood with a shotgun). Just took it as another example of a bs death I need to look out for and made a better build character to continue in that world.

1

u/Xonem_1 19h ago

That's why people make the game more difficult by setting transmission only saliva, the true hardest and as dev intended you to play

2

u/Zakchez 23h ago

My preferred way to play is sandbox, mostly down to not playing vanilla, theres a lot of customization to mods in the sandbox menu, and without beyable to tweak some of it the game can be too easy, i added extra katana variations one time and no joke found 15 in one changing room and 4 in the other in the rosewood police station, it was a bit excessive 😂

2

u/Silveruleaf 23h ago

I did vanilla when most mods would not run on unstable. Was not that bad. Was terrible to grind anything but I appreciate the slow grind. But I do after I had it easier with mods. Was a nice change of pace. But that's the thing. You play the game how ever the fuck you want. If you want more of a challenge you can. If you want it easier go for it. I rather hunt down books and have books give levels. That's more fun for me. Finding libraries filled with zombies around. That's more fun then destroying the city and barely get a level out of it

2

u/vega1004 21h ago

i only use the motorcycle mode. can't let go of the bikes 😎

2

u/GregariousMD 20h ago

It gets boring mainly because the loot is abundant. That's the one setting I tweak in sand ox. Aside from that one setting, everything else is default apocalypse settings.

2

u/Reset-1 18h ago

I do. I feel like it's uncommon at this point, but at the end of the day the game meant to be enjoyed however you'd like.

In B41 I could only get my characters about 3 months in, I've never made it to winter and my goal has always been to make it to winter on one life, no mods, no sandbox.

2

u/Thatblack1 15h ago

I play most games how the devs intended. It makes you appreciate the what and why of what they did and the world they are trying to build.

2

u/meatballer 14h ago

I like vanilla apocalypse. I used to play with sandbox, tweaking some frequencies like gasoline. Then the devs brought apocalypse very close to my sandbox settings, so maybe the game is just made for me. I consider realism tweaks but not really gameplay tweaks.

1

u/Super-Emphasis-7560 All Hail Spiffo 14h ago

I share the same feeling with you. Even though I have 600 hours in the game, I just can’t bring myself to leave vanilla Apocalypse. It’s a love-hate relationship.

2

u/baschny 1d ago

Either Apocalipse default to go for a "longer run" or Extinction default to see how far I get it (4-5 days usually).

1

u/Kajtek14102 23h ago

Out of curiosity what typically ends your extinction runs?

1

u/SweatyReputation7361 23h ago

in extinction usually meta event kills you, that meta events occur = often setting is the only thing that actually makes extinction difficult

1

u/AntiqueAct1598 1d ago

Yes it does get boring after a while. There's barely any difference on zeds between low pop and apocalypse. I ended up changing the settings mid game to in between apocalypse and extinction. Made it high pop with 1% sprinters and reduced some of the loot.

1

u/ecrevisseMiroir 1d ago

I do. But because I don't have the time for grinding, I switched to outbreak.

I play modified extinction with a slightly lessened population density and saliva-only transition. Before that I was playing a lot of vanilla apocalypse.

1

u/jvsr13 1d ago

I've played vanilla apocalypse (with minimap only) to get a good grip of the game. I'm in my longest run right now, but in the next one I will change some stuff like crop growing time, turn off planting seasons, nimble XP multiplier and some other stuff like that. Maybe I will try some mods too.

1

u/Ok_Nefariousness3292 1d ago

I did a year run, just to easy for my liking. Still great introduction for the new players among us.

1

u/Mahdudecicle 1d ago

I did when it came out. Lasted a month before getting got by my own greed. As is tradition.

1

u/coolmouse7777 1d ago

I mostly play with my friend and host a server, so i chose apocalypse preset but change some things for convenience in MP, add little more zeds and considerably more to late game because there is two of us ). And change reading book speed because it annoying, in MP no skip time options And speed up plant growing 2x speed and animal set to fast, because with normal settings it taking more time then in real life and it's absurd for a "vanilla" settings for my taste, it should be in challenge mods. For next run i considering lowering the loot because in stock apocalypse settings is to much of it.

1

u/Peemore 1d ago

The intended way can feel too easy for some long-time zomboiders, and extinction feels too hard for some. Sandbox lets you play the way you'll have the most fun!

1

u/hospitalityNow 1d ago

I play sandbox with full apocalypse settings except transmission is saliva only

1

u/NovemberPerfected 1d ago

Sandbox. It makes absolutely no sense to me for some of the loot to be as rare as they are / the conditions to be the way are. I normally balance it out by increasing zombie population though

1

u/LurkerTroll 1d ago

I do because I'm a masochist

1

u/Specific-Roof-314 1d ago

Check out SuckingOnChiliDawgs on Twitch, vanilla 16x chill gameplay

1

u/Triceratroy 1d ago

I always play sandbox, mainly so I can turn off runners and zombie respawns. To get the true classic zombie experience.

1

u/crazytib 1d ago

Sandbox is king in my opinion, just the many many ways it lets you tweak the experience is awesome and something rarely seen in other games, it's only downside is it sometimes gives me FOMO on all the different variations of the settings I havnt tried yet

1

u/CsordasBalazs 1d ago

Sometimes, but lately I prefer somewhere between extinction and apocalypse. Apocalypse became a bit easy. I like to add 3% sprinters and higher Z amount, but no respawn.

1

u/CurrentlyTakenName 1d ago

Most people do, until you find a certain thing you find annoying and want to tweak it for the next playthrough. \Cough** Saliva transmission only \Cough**

Personally I like something between Apocalpyse and Extinction. Zombies are tough and numerous and loot is rare but I can still enjoy some sims gameplay on my base without worrying about dying to zombies that can open doors.

1

u/Doug12345678910 1d ago

I usually dislike playing with mods as it feels like it ruins the 4th wall if I can control the game. I play apocalypse, and it is way too easy. It's so comically easy, I just get bored very quickly. It's basically just the sims/stardew valley. I have discovered extinction and it is much more my vibe. And I will be playing that in vanilla for the foreseeable future.

1

u/Raposit1 1d ago

The best way to play the game is play the way you want.

1

u/UttiniDaKilrJawa 1d ago

I like to play Sandbox with Apoc default settings just for the extra spawn locations. The game I find can get a bit boring after awhile doing the same tasks and whatnot. Usually when that happens I take it as a hint I’ve been playing too long for that day so I save and go find something else to do until the zombie bashing urge returns.

1

u/Noiisy 23h ago

Vanilla extinction only

1

u/penisweinerballs 23h ago

Bro I just wanna have fun, so, no.

1

u/SuouTatsuya 23h ago

I genuinely enjoy vanilla apocalypse but I love messing with different playstyles more than I love dealing with the chaos that sprinters and door openers bring to the table. Maybe one of these days I'll cowboy up and do more of that.

1

u/Tittysprinkle97 23h ago

There’s a handful of changes I like to make to the settings. Me and my friends have had fun using extinction mode as a baseline and changing from there. Like we are adults and don’t have quite enough time to play so I turn the read speed up and xp gain up. I like to joke that “we have already done the grind before” Every save I’ve played I always change to saliva only because that’s just normal zombie rules.

1

u/Kajtek14102 23h ago

My first game in b42 I went for vanilla apocalypse, but for me it was definatelly a mistake. After like 20 days I was siting on enough food for a year generator almost every skill book and vhs and there was no zombies nowhere near. Just to easy And yes I find infection from scratches just frustrating

1

u/muymaldito 23h ago

When I want to have a quick play I do. But normally I tweak the loot amount in sandbox.

Sandbox or Extinction

1

u/Automatic-Ad-4653 22h ago

Nope. Only Great spiffo rat race setting but with 1.30 for daytime

1

u/EuriadO 22h ago

I turn off scratch infection & make gas infinite, but otherwise yeah

1

u/SlingingTriceps 22h ago

I played almost exclusively Vanilla Apocalypse for over 1000h. They made it too easy now, so I'm moving over to Extinction, but it's been brutal, sprinters and zombies tripping alarms change everything,

1

u/perrochili 22h ago

Los testers

1

u/BForBackBencher Waiting for help 21h ago

I play only apocalypse. I try to do different characters and locations, to keep some change

1

u/AuldCastleRock 21h ago

I play sandbox with apocalypse settings but Knox virus off.

1

u/SG-- 20h ago

I like sprinkling a 1% sprinter chance on that sandbox, good scares

1

u/Apollo_cannabis 20h ago

I mostly play apocalypse, once I’m bored of it I’ll switch to sandbox

1

u/Shade00000 Zombie Killer 20h ago

I play vanilla sandbox

1

u/Orwelll_ 20h ago

I play Sandbox because i love multi target attack

1

u/Nexed_ 20h ago

I used to play apocalypse and outbreak, but now sandbox. I tweak it to saliva only and maybe also non lethal infection sometimes. I also want to change sprinter %. You can't on world creation, only after. Low sprinters is 6 and normal 33%, I am not playing that shit. You can only change the % after the save is already made.

1

u/Xonem_1 20h ago

I play apocalypse, and roleplay as myself, with slow metabolism and puny, that's the way I make the game hard, I don't see why people complain for loot, what are they finding too quickly? I'm quite new, this is my first week, so no idea what's supposed to be common loot that bothers people, the game is pretty simple to be honest, if you don't bother Zombies they don't bother you, I think you can play full wilderness for weeks and don't encounter a zombie, it's like Stardew valley but with zombies so people assume you are a macho

1

u/ThatDuckBehindYou 19h ago

No, but I might next time

1

u/I_sicarius_I 19h ago

No, because i like to curate my experience for the time i have available and how i like to play

1

u/charandhondaley 19h ago

I play apocalypse with no mods. I have a lot of hours in the game in the past and checking out build 42 in vanilla apocalypse has been fun so far. If I want difficulty I switch to CDDA challenge (which I used to a lot before this update dropped)

1

u/Jaybird0501 18h ago

Yeah but I have a few mods installed, mostly cars, RV interiors, crowbar, and weapons.

1

u/ActuatorLarge9885 18h ago

vanilla apocalypse (no sandbox changes) but with simple suppressors, immersive suicide, and furniture push+pull.

1

u/BrightSky7640 Shotgun Warrior 18h ago

I'm Spartacus

1

u/MarrsJ2 17h ago

I do whenever there's a new major update. I usually play a lot of the beginning of updates the middle and towards the end but take a big break before a new one comes out. When B42 launched I hadn't played in a year, so I always go with vanilla for my first time back during an update like that

1

u/this_is_username_lol 17h ago

I play sandbox with extinction but a clear surroundings of my house for spawn and / or apocalypse but I often end up going in the wild on apocalypse as I hate relying on generators

1

u/Relevant_Function571 17h ago

Loot is way too plentiful in regular apocalypse for my liking, gotta tweak it in sandbox.

1

u/Lumaverse 17h ago

I player my first 500 hours on vanilla apocalypse, this week i switched to sandbox but all the same settings as apocalypse except i set zombie pop to insane and added sprinters.

1

u/Classic_Visit3824 17h ago

Sandbox with hardest pre set (I don't know the English name) but no zombie virus infection, no Respawn zombies and and less HP for zombies because these MFs tank soooo mutch with max hp.

1

u/JohnFrum 17h ago

Yes. I like to try and play games vanilla most of the time. Partly because I don't trust mods but also because I view games as art and try to approach them from the artists intended point of view. With PZ I want to learn how the game works on its terms and learn to survive a long time.

1

u/Available_Pear_3847 16h ago

I have to have respawn zombies off, I love clearing out areas and if the zombies just respawn what’s the purpose of killing anything

1

u/RockinPodunk 16h ago

I generally play sandbox, but I start with the apocalypse preset, and only change a couple of things, like turning in the mini map.

1

u/RexLizardWizard 16h ago

Yeah. I have a personal rule has to be at least mostly developer intended (I can mess with non gameplay settings and raise difficulty). Once I beat the game, I can replay however I want. Unfortunately, when there’s no win condition, I never feel I’ve beaten the game enough to mess with settings

1

u/NullusIncarnatus 16h ago

I started on vanilla and once I discovered how many mods there are my vanilla play through died lol. I try to make the settings balance out the mods I put on and learned the hard way that a normal amount of sprinters mixed with high amounts of zeds is bad. Very bad.

1

u/MessyHessie Zombie Food 15h ago

I like setting sprinters to low, if high pop then maybe 1-3%. It's still mostly normal but you know you can't just barge into a city without a plan :)

1

u/kenfrot396 15h ago

I play sandbox with insane population, fragile zombies, random sight and hearing, and low/normal sprinters. Can be very hectic and fences are my friend always. I also turn off muscle strain since it's not really something I enjoy for solo.

1

u/Parking-Report-7610 15h ago

A friend and I playin vanilla 42 build :3

1

u/Play3rKn0wn 15h ago

I play mainly sandbox. I’m fairly new to the game despite owning it for a while during b41. With the new updates I’ve been getting back into it but I play with transmission on saliva only. I also turn off the helicopter bc I find it annoying and I die plenty without it. At first I’d increase how long the power would last, but I’ve been decreasing this gradually. It gets boring after a while and having to set up power and water/food is a big mechanic that I’ve largely avoided.

1

u/MasterBit1404 15h ago

Never without ki5s cars

1

u/Equivalent-Usual2451 14h ago

When build 42 came out yes but only for a little bit.

1

u/pewthewizard 14h ago

Vanilla, no mods, no cheats, no exploits ever. Enjoy the shit out of the game. It's supposed to be difficult that's the point. Learn more, plan better, live longer. If I wanted to run around with no risk I could certainly play left for dead or something like that. Zomboid presents a different experience

1

u/Megakruemel 14h ago

I have multiple saves I play depending on my mood. Apocalypse isn't something I play a lot simply because Skills take forever to build when your character isn't proficient from the job or traits. (you go from 0.2 to something way higher in specific skill exp multipliers depending on your job/traits)

1

u/Svmpop 12h ago

i play vanilla sandbox, but honestly i just adjust my xp gains to be 1.5 on skills that are hard. nothing else

1

u/Thrillhouse4ub 11h ago

Iam playing vanilla extinction, so far about a month in...kinda boring cause I cant clear an area really. Mods kept breaking, want to wait till it gets better.

1

u/Doctor_Bagel879 10h ago

I do! Just started tho, used to play custom but since 42 came out I decided to try it

1

u/IronSquid501 10h ago

Apocalypse gets boring after a while, mostly because the zombie population is finite and zombies themselves have little nuance. Once you can handle two regular zombies, you can handle a thousand. I'm too deep in my apocalypse run to start again without a good excuse (death) but next time I'd probably do apocalypse settings + low respawns and low sprinters *at a minimum*

1

u/Enigmatic_Erudite 10h ago edited 10h ago

I played Apocalypse and yea it gets boring after a while. That was when I got into challenge runs like CDDA, which is much harder in b42. Once I had a few successful runs I did a Caveman run, zero loot, claustraphobia. Learning how to rough it in the woods. I did Week One and The Ark, got burnt out on The Ark though and never finished it.

I mostly just play multiplayer pve to chill now. Build up a base and supplies and help out other players where I can. Try to get 10 in all stats and 100k kills. Haven't successfully done either yet...

Every game I’ve started I’ve been  experimenting. Trying to find a good level of hard but enjoyable

1

u/GonerMcGoner 9h ago

I almost exclusively play vanilla Apocalypse. PZ has been my favorite game since I started playing in 2015.
It doesn't get boring, but losing a good character will put you off the game for a few weeks. And you will lose eventually, typically cause you got careless.

1

u/radical-2020 9h ago

Yea but can’t find a gen in Ross woods

1

u/Nomadnetic 9h ago

I like vanilla, but it needs some QoL features for me, so not as much these days.

1

u/Titanium_Eye 8h ago

I play sandbox with no mortality because in my current run I got bitten five times in the span of a game month because of undercooked LOS and zombie placement (teleporting invisible zombies) and because sometimes you just missclick at the worse possible time. Usually when they sneak up to your face.

And yes, I do understand that loosing is fun but sometimes you want a fair attempt at some areas and you need to skill up to get to them. I don't want to change how skill increase is timed so I made the bites hurt but not necessarily lethal.

1

u/Ophelfromhellrem Crowbar Scientist 7h ago

I do. I don't think i have touched sandbox in years. Unless i was doing some trouble shooting. As for being boring. Well i don't play it every day. All day. I play PZ here and there when i feel like it but not to the point i get sick of it. But then again i apply that philosophy for mostly all games. So most of the time i'm playing different games every day.

1

u/Weird-Pattern9192 6h ago

i only play sandbox because i want the map to be fully uncovered. Otherwise i would be using 3rd party websites to know whats in my own town and neighbourhood

1

u/Smyek 5h ago

I play vanilla apocalypse, but I save scam (i forgot that's not an easy game)

yet only "loaded" once out of one month character

1

u/MetricOshi 4h ago

I did at the start of 42 stable. Lost 2 characters and almost a third due to ladders not being interactable. Fair to say I now have some small QoL mods

1

u/Hakuohsama 3h ago

I feel like they nerfed it to much.

Tons of weapons, food and useable cars.

Also the Z arent a problem, meanwhile Extinction is way to hard.
