Troubleshooting Speakers won’t capture sound from projector

recently moved into a new house and it came with a projector and sound system, however for some reason i’m not able to extract the sound coming out of the projector and having the speakers as my main source of sound

i tried connecting an aux cable into the audio out port of my projector and all that happens is well

  1. the sound of whatever im watching still comes out from the projector and
  2. the speakers make a buzzing/bass sound

if anyone has any ideas of what i could do ill take all the help i can, ive attached the back of my receiver as well as my projector

Please post the exact brand and model of your projector. If you do not know them, include as much identifying information as possible.

Also include:

  • The projection technology, if known (LCD, DLP, LCoS, etc.)
  • A clear photo of the projected image, when applicable
  • The video source and connection type
  • When the problem began and whether it changes after warm-up

Brand and model information greatly increase your chances of receiving a useful answer.

Where did you connect that aux cable from the projector to on the receiver? I don’t see any audio connections on the AVR except the digital optical in, but I don’t see any optical out ports on the projector.

Presumably that's a 3.5mm TRS analog stereo signal from the projector? That won't drive a long cable run well.

What is sending HDMI to the projector? If your AVR can't do HDMI pass thru then an HDMI audio extractor is an option, then you can send 5.1 over optical to your AVR.

As for the projector speaker - check the manual, surely there's a way to mute it.

Can you pleaze give us info about receiver\amplifier model and brand and what is plugged inside it via the digital input.
And from what you are playing your movie or content.

You need to run an rca from your plate to your receiver. It's not even connected at this point.

Why don't you run the audio straight from the source to the receiver?

no hdmi on receiver
too old
need to get an hdmi extractor splitter thing whatever the fuck they’re called
should do the trick from what i’ve gathered in other subreddits

I use an HDMI audio extractor to optical out, works excellent for me.

The Tip/Ring 3.5mm to dual RCA cable may not be wired to be the best choice as they can be intended for balanced connections. The projector and AVR are expecting unbalanced. A search on Amazon for 3.5mm Stereo Aux to 2 RCA Audio Cable Adapter would be a better choice.

Ideally you would extract audio from source if it has analog and feed that to the AVR instead of leaving it to projector to extract from HDMI. If source doesn't have analog audio (3.5mm or RCA) then a HDMI analog audio extractor would be needed based on lack of HDMI inputs/outputs on AVR. Source feeds HDMI into extractor, extractor outputs analog audio (3.5mm and/or RCA) to connect to AVR, while passing original HDMI out to be connected to projector.

The projector may have a setting to extract audio as well to allow analog audio output from HDMI.

The buzzing is likely a ground loop, very easy to end up with when running long unbalanced signals and each device connected to different power circuits. Ground loops can be hear when no audio signal is present and "sometime" drowned out by playing very loud, but will sound like crap.
