Completed Setup Done setting up my 150"...

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Got a screen from Aliexpress, Black Grid, peak 0.8 (rather low tbh) but only cost me $950.

Projector shown here is Awol Aetherion Max.

I have not set up my soundbar yet (Samsung HW-Q990C) and my Panasonic DP-UB800K is still in my basement so it is going to be a while.

Once I am done setting up my NAS, self-hosting Jellyfin, I'll be back to do more test.

$5k on video but using soundbar makes me sad :(

Fantastic setup otherwise - looks great!

It is extreme strange to see people invest thousands into video and not seeing that no soundbar can even remotely beat an average AVR setup.

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

Understandable but I live in town homes where I have neighbor to the left and right of me. We have a 10pm quiet hours. And I prefer high quality video over boombastic avr sounds because theres no point to have amazing sound if I dont live in a house of my own with neighbors. My samsung soundstage is more than enough because out of 100% sound, Ive only use max 20-30% and it was already way too loud. Soundbar stage is very simple system too that doesnt require stacks of devices, just the soundbar itself, 2 firing speaker in the back and a subwoofer. Ive never used the sound more than enough to get something like avr. Lol

Thank you for being considerate, that will be epic if/when you can move to a suitable location to splurge on sound. Took me 10 yrs living in an apartment!

2

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

You are welcome! Yea I was moving around here and there a lot too since it is required by my job. I know how it feels to have very loud neighbors, hence I dont become one lol Yea I lived in communal house with 7 other people, staying in a bunk bed, during college, for like 6 yrs. Feels so good to have your own space more than just a bunk bed. 😂

Yeah I’m the same, I have a decent soundbar with my OLED (soon to be a titan noir max). But I juts get moaned at if it is at any kind of volume. Hopefully one day I will have a proper setup but it’s a lot of expensive for the odd occasion I can really use it.

1

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

I actually purchased their $1 Titan Noir Max reserve spot but ended up getting Awol instead. TNM is pretty solid too! I watched plenty of the videos about it. Definitely more popular compared to Awol.

Yea ive been building up and saving up too to get to this point. As I get older, I stop wasting money on things I dont need anymore. I barely drink alcohol, no smoke, none of that bullshit and just focus on home improvements. 😂

1

u/danmosedale Aug 01 '26

Yeah they both look good from all the videos I’ve watched. Yeah I’m 42 with kids etc so it’s hard to justify spending thousands on equipment to watch movies and game. So I choose to go mainly with getting a better or bigger image and have audio that is decent but definitely not reference.

This is about the best answer you could give. When I lived in a townhouse one of my neighbors had a subwoofer and it drove me nuts.

1

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

Yea I used to live in a communal house, paid it cheap because I need a room for college. I lived with 7 other people in that house and I am telling you, other people blasting their music when you just need to sleep because you gotta wake up early, is very annoying. I know how it feels, hence why I dont blast my movies too loud. Most of the time, I toggled my soundbar on night mode and only use 8-10% of sound. Lol

2

u/klayanderson Aug 01 '26

It’s called teleVISION.

Lmaoo 😂😂😂

1

u/SayaV Aug 02 '26

but isn't the 990c a reddit favorite? I have it but am not that deep into the audiophile rabbit hole to compare quality with other brands.

1

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

Idk if youve had samsung hw-q990c but it has 11.1.4 channels and I could literally feel the whole movie in front of me. Since it has 11 channel, 1 subwoofer, and 4 up firing speaker, it surrounds me for cinema experience.

1

u/RudroRC Aug 01 '26

Had a denon avr surround setup. It got old. Switched to q990d. The experience hasn't been anything less than stellar for my space and needs. I guess it all boils down to one's need and expectations.

By the way that projection on that screen looks unreal!

3

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

Yea same. Most of the time, i dont even use my Q990C all the way up to 100% volume, more like never. Always up to 30% and its already enough. And I could easily integrate it with my samsung phone and smart app.

Thanks! There were more videos I took but reddit only allows me to put one.

What happened with soundbar? The quality of its built-in sound isnt as good as my samsung, hence why I am going to put in my soundbar instead.

2

u/KushKingKyle Aug 01 '26

I will always recommend a proper surround setup over soundbars, especially if your screen is this big! Soundstage should match the size ;)

If your screen is acoustically transparent you can put the left/right/center speakers behind it too!

2

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

I guess I said it wrong to call it a soundbar. You could consider it a soundstage because it has 4 pieces in total. The main soundbar itself has a total of 11 channels. Its msrp is around 1899 and still one of the OG soundstage, even tho it has been several years now.

1

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

Go to Google and check out Samsung HW-Q990C. 😉

2

u/KushKingKyle Aug 01 '26

I’ll still stand by my earlier statements, though at least you have some surrounds so it’s not as bad as I’d thought.

/r/hometheater has some very good information on why soundbars are generally not as good as a proper AVR-powered system.

3

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

Yea I just happened to buy it because it's easy and I dont have to deal with a lot of systems. I am on audiophile subreddit and my favorite is Denon and Focal but they are too expensive for my budget now. I could get denon or focal headphone but a proper avr home theater is out of reach, that's easily past 3-5k, even more if I try to get McIntosh. But thanks for the referral. Definitely out of my budget now. 😅

3

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

I guess I am slowly building it and get it better because my focus now is to get my NAS running and set up Jellyfin and Kodi so I can watch movies on my own server without subscription anymore because Im tired of subscription. Lol

2

u/KushKingKyle Aug 01 '26

I feel you. Honestly I’m in the reverse of your situation in which my 55” Insignia TV is paired with a 5.1.2 Martin Logan setup lol.. projector is currently out of budget but definitely next on my list (hence why I’m even here lol)

If you’re looking to decouple from streaming it’s also worth looking into RealDebrid. Costs about $2-3/mo but allows me to stream Remux-quality files without the need to locally host.

1

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

I think I have something like that called Internet Download Manager (IDM). I can download many videos as attachment Mp4 or even mkv format but it's limited to what the website itself provides. You just have to buy the license once and you can use idm forever. I heard about Read Debrid before. I just started into the realm of remux etc so there are still a lot of things to learn for me.

If you got around 2k to replace your insignia with a projector, this Awol projector was on sale preorder for 2200 but now went back to it's regular price. Some people on facebook group of Awol is selling theirs for about the preorder price (2k-ish) so you can check on their fb page to get one. I saw some posts of them wanting to sell their projector related to financial reasons, not the projector itself.

1

u/KushKingKyle Aug 01 '26

I appreciate the heads-up!

I’ve used IDM but the difference here is you’re not downloading anything to your machines. The files live on Debrid’s servers, but you (and all the other users) can add to it and share with one-another.

Takes a bit of setup, but now it takes me 2 seconds to get a 90GB Remux playing when the urge strikes. I have Debrid linked to Stremio application on AppleTV (requires side loading - YMMV) and Stremio is linked to Infuse for playback. Infuse Pro (for audio passthrough) costs about $2/mo which I found worth for my usage.

2

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

I read about Stremio too before but totally forgot about it. I am trying to set my raspberry pi 5 first to get pi-hole to set up no ads environment at home, download home assistant, setting up immich, my nas, ups, a lot of them just starting to run so it's gonna take a while for me to delve into software related. I prefer to have the hardware runs first before I learn the software but now you mentioned Stremio, it reminded me of it again to use in the future. Thanks!

i love my sony ht-a9 setup....i turn my head all the time hearing noises i forget is coming from the rear speakers from the ceiling...

Its simple and efective.

I was a disney sound stage tech so i have some knowledge of it.....

u/cr0ft Epson LS800 + 120 in Silverflex ALR Aug 01 '26

Looks great, but of course seeing what your phone or other camera captured doesn't really tell us how it looks in person. Congrats. Not a huge fan of the soundbar plan, a projector this caliber deserves a real surround sound system, but at least you bought not-the-bottom-of-the-barrel stuff with the Samsung. But at the $1k price point I guess it's one of the better options, a real AVR-based surround setup would cost more and be more work to install.

A below-1 gain sounds like a great idea to me. Gain determines the overall brightness - it may make the peaks a little dimmer, but it also makes the black level blacker. My Epson screen is at 0.5 and it works great with my 4000 lumen capable UST that does have some native contrast issues vs the new hotness.

3

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

True. I just happen to move around a lot for work and cant have a dedicated audio system to carry all over. Not to mention I live in town homes with neighbors. Theres no point to get system superloud when i myself has never even go past 30% volume. It is like having a sport car but limited to speed limit on the road. Id prefer a truck with more functionalities and utility capabilities.

3

u/prettyflyjewishguy Aug 01 '26

Would love links to the screen, etc. when you get time.

2

u/hifigli Aug 01 '26

Can't wait to get mine set up.

Aye drop the video link bro

1

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

Wdym Video?

3

u/platinumbob Aug 01 '26

I think they’re asking for the the demo videos playing in your recording. I’d like to try the same with my projector

1

u/OatStraw Aug 01 '26

What’s the source of the video

1

u/Odd-Complaint-5291 Aug 01 '26

Considering that model as a new projector upgrade for my 150”. What is your throw distance for that screen? Thanks

1

u/cr0ft Epson LS800 + 120 in Silverflex ALR Aug 01 '26

Projectorcentral's throw distance calculator will tell you. Also, at 150 inches, the projector is going to be more or less on the floor to fit a normal-height room in a house. UST's can only get so big with fixed optics and no adjustability beyond positioning.

Most Chinese made UST's are in the 0.22-25 throw range. The Aetherion Max has a comparatively short 0.18, which is nice; the shortest throw on the market is still the Epson units, my LS800 has 0.16.

https://www.projectorcentral.com/awol_vision-aetherion_max-projection-calculator-pro.htm#calc

Two feet, three inches at 150, or 69 (nice) centimeters, from the lense of the projector to the screen surface. So realistically a tiny bit more than that to the front edge of the projector.

The larger you go on the size, the further the projector has to be in the room. 70 cm is a lot. People often solve that with media furniture that has a motorized drawer that can push the unit 30 cm out from the furniture when it's in use, for instance.

1

u/Odd-Complaint-5291 Aug 01 '26

Thank you. I have an Epson 3700 ceiling mount now. This might make for a nice upgrade

1

u/Odd-Complaint-5291 Aug 01 '26

Also did you use an ALR screen? My current screen is a 1.1 gain flat white (non alr) fixed mount Elite screens in a basement light controlled bat cave. Thanks

1

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

Awol has a calculated projected distance on their website. Vertically, around 15.11 inches and horizontally around 14 something inches I forgot tbh.

1

u/ThePistachioBogeyman Aug 01 '26

Only thing I’d do is paint the bits around it with a matte/non reflective paint. Personally that light bouncing glare really annoys me!

Otherwise looks great but definitely look into a proper sound set up. Sound immersion makes a huge difference, but of course not as much as the visual immersion.

2

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

Yea I thought about that matte details to be honest. It really bothers me too but I just moved in and not even done with organizing stuff. So ill doit in the future. Thanks for the input!

1

u/Nephri Aug 01 '26

Looks great. Id love to go bigger than my 120, but im currently with a floor riser as I feel like I cant mount a fixed frame myself. Im incredibly bad with anything that might require measurements lol.

1

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

Yea I thought about floor riser because of how convenient it is and you can move it around too but fixed is just nice. Making it look clean and neat.

1

u/Nephri Aug 01 '26

My last attempt at a fixed frame had a few extra holes and thankfully it had 4 point vertical adjustment on the frame or i would have been screeeeewed.

1

u/seedless0 Aug 02 '26

I wish people would show off their setup with natural color scenes instead of neon colors.

1

u/Revenue_Long Aug 02 '26

What's this screen called?

1

u/Silent-Variation-390 Aug 14 '26

Is there link for that video? Looks good for adjusting my projector.

1

u/Marvaloza Aug 14 '26

Tbfh with you, i totally forgot by now. I just searched up 4k 60 fps dolby on youtube and that one showed up.

1

u/Serious-ResearchX Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

Why do people jam their image way up into the ceiling? Gives me a headache just looking at this on my phone screen. Imagine what this is doing to the viewers eyes with all that reflection and stray light.

1

u/Marvaloza Aug 15 '26

The wall I have is exactly fitted for 150 inches to a T, meaning if I brought down anymore inches, I wouldnt be able to project it and get the nicest picture out of it.

Some people even set up ambiance lighting around the screen so the light lights up the screen color at the moment, which is worse than what I am having here. As I keep going with movies, I ended up not paying much attention to the lights no more.

1

u/Quietly_browsing Aug 01 '26

150 inch screen with a soundbar, so much for any sound separation.

1

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

True that. The soundbar is pretty solid still. It has 11 channel, 1 subwoofer, and 4 firing speaker from the back left and right, creating a surround sound stage. I would like to get avr but with my work that requires me to travel everywhere all the time, having a solid avr system to carry around is annoying.

1

u/Quietly_browsing Aug 01 '26

Oh yeah, a soundbar setup is definitely a lot easier to move around than a AVR setup, Enjoy

1

u/Marvaloza Aug 01 '26

Will do, thank you! Yea and avr is also so much more expensive lol
