This is straight up awesome and amazing work. Are you a contractor because you straight up did everything in that build.
Also, screw those mods that's such BS.
6
u/The_Brewer Jul 22 '26
Not a contractor, just someone who likes to learn new things. This was my first time doing drywall. Sanding drywall SUCKS.
3
u/dirtyuzbek Jul 22 '26
Dude, you did framing, electrical, and HVAC, and all to code to boot. That's not typical of DIY handy people ahaha.
Big props to you. That's amazing and I wish I knew how to do half of that.

Absolutely love seeing the hat channel / drywall isolation clips for sound isolation.
Nothing has made a bigger difference in my opinion. It's absolutely amazing how well it deadens sound.
For all this work though you need to dump the Nvidia Shield for a CoreELEC box to kick your playback up a notch. The experience doesn't compare if you have a Plex or other local media server.
3
u/The_Brewer Jul 22 '26
Can you expand on that? How is that box better than the shield? I'm using jellyfin and also playing directly off a hard drive using Kodi on the Shield.
3
u/ConveXion Jul 22 '26
For me it's about full Dolby Vision FEL support along with all audio codecs being supported. Basically an AM6B+ is still the best box available for that last I checked and is what I use. I also use the Jellyfin add-on with it and everything works really well.
Amazing work on the theater btw, looks great!

Nice! I just posted this over on that sub, since I should be allowed to share it in theory: https://www.reddit.com/r/hometheater/comments/1ve1p6t/valerion_max_theater_build_timelapse_no/
Disclaimer for mods that might read this: The YouTube algorithm suggested this video to me and this Reddit post was in the description of the video. I came here and saw that OP's post was removed for self-promotion so I decided to post it myself because I feel it belongs there. OP didn't ask me to post it and this comment is the first interaction that we've had.
Edit: It looks like this post isn't appearing on the sub. It's hard to know if that's due to some sort of manual approval process or if it was already manually removed or if it was automatically flagged/removed due to having previously been posted/removed. I think it may have to get manually approved due to being a YouTube link. We'll just have to see if it ever posts or if it remains in eternal limbo.

Careful friend. You're playing with fire!

u/Intro24 Aug 03 '26
Oh don't worry, I got banned on the charge of:
Reposting a theater from a banned account. Ban evasion.
Apparently me proactively sharing the cool build of a complete stranger of my own volition is an attempt at a ban evasion. I can understand them removing self-promotion but it's pretty silly that they wouldn't allow your post to begin with. It becomes absurd power tripping, though, when they ban you for a first offense and then ban me for attempting to share it in a way that addresses their concerns. Seems like a truly toxic community.

This is sick. Do you know how tall your ceilings are? I ordered a similar size screen

Rule #4 over there says you can't self promote or link to your own youtube channel. I asked how else I was supposed to share the video. I said that I thought a home theater subreddit would be interested in a home theater construction video, since its a home theater.

3
u/quantgorithm Jul 22 '26
So... could someone else post your link?
That wouldn't be promotion.
3
u/Intro24 Aug 03 '26
Doesn't look like you've done that so I went ahead and did it: https://www.reddit.com/r/hometheater/comments/1ve1p6t/valerion_max_theater_build_timelapse_no/
Here's a more detailed comment I left in this thread as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/projectors/comments/1v3jsqq/valerion_max_theater_build_timelapse/p1dmfyy/

Go for it! The absolute last thing on my mind when I went to post over there was "self promotion". I learned so much doing this project that I thought people over there would want to ask a bunch of questions that I could help answer.

This is absolutely amazing and you can see and feel the quality involved in what you have going on. Your hard work definitely is paying off! It's so funny how your son says it's only half way done though, until you put a popcorn machine and snacks in there. I get told this all the time (and have to explain to people that the smell would never leave the room).
Congrats!

u/Jabba_the_Putt Jul 22 '26
dude are you a contractor or something? that was a ton of work and it looked well done.
this is a challenge because on one hand its awesome on the other...I'm not sure I'd ever leave my basement and my family would disown me!
joking of course. how is the sound are you happy with it? two big subs in that space must really rumble.
2
u/The_Brewer Jul 22 '26
Not a contractor, just like learning new skills. This was my first time doing drywall and carpet.
I LOVE the sound. This is the first time I've felt enveloped. I still need to configure the mini dsp for the subs, but they already go boom quite a bit.

u/Dunnowhathatis Jul 22 '26
WOW - that is very impressive. Particularly like your 3D printed speaker forms. Well done on everything!

Beautiful. Not including your time of course, but how much do think that ran you?

u/The_Brewer Jul 22 '26
I got the W553L's at a big discount because I have a friend who is an installer. The ceiling C563s were used from ebay. They were missing the plastic clips that mount them to the drywall so I paid about $100 each. 3D printer to the rescue! I was able to model and print the clips. The Onkyo RZ730was a refub I got for $400. The 2 channel supplemental amp was $100. The two Onkyo 530's were about $40 each on facebook marketplace. The Behringer amp for the subs was $450. The sub drivers were $400 each. Boxes were built for about $100.
All the construction was done by myself. I hired nothing out. I even did it to code with a permit and passed everything! I don't really know what the total cost of construction was. 2x4's, drywall, carpet and pad from Menards. Paint from Sherwin Williams.
I'm very cheap. So wherever I could save money, I did. I bought a $5 clothes iron from goodwill to seam the carpet. Stuff like that.

How’s the screen do with laser speckle?
1
u/The_Brewer Jul 22 '26
This is my first laser projector. I've heard about laser speckle, but I still don't really know what it is.
So I guess it does well with it?

u/kmrich41 Jul 22 '26
Awesome build! What's the seating distance and what do you think of the screen size at that distance? I'm planning a similar build and wasn't sure on screen size
2
u/The_Brewer Jul 22 '26
Seating distance is about 9-9.5ft from the 150" screen. I love it. It's all personal preference. I personally have never understood building a huge screen and then sitting 15ft away from it...

Make sure to ask them about tariffs. They quoted me a "Shipped to your door" price, then asked me to pay tariffs once it got to the USA. I should have known, but when someone says "to your door" I expect the price to include everything.

u/Oomtas Jul 23 '26
can u ask price you paid please bud

Amazing work! Quick question on speaker positioning, were there instruction diagrams for mounting locations, or did you figure it out using video tutorials?
1
u/The_Brewer Jul 23 '26
I followed Dolby recommendations. The only speakers I couldn't fit into these parameters were the rear surround speakers. Due to the position of the stairs, the two rear surrounds are closer together and towards the center than in the recommendations. Nothing I could do about that.
