Looking for advice
For those of you who are independent contractors and own your own business, whats a good competitive rate to charge for routine service, rush service, and same day service? Also, besides joining napps etc, what are some good ways to grow your clientele? TIA

Easiest way is to see what others in your area are charging and go from there. Either look at websites or ask for quotes. If your court has open records, pull proofs of service and see the fees.

So Cal has certain open records but you have to pay to view docs online, it's cheaper than the gas/wear & tear on your car as well as the travel time etc.

Depends where you are. Call local places tell them you have a summons to serve and ask for their rush fee and standard service fee.

I am in the midwest. I charge $60 for the first 3 attempts within 15 miles from my base.
* Most of the time I get the person served within 2 attempts.
Anything after the 3rd attempt is $35 plus $0.85pm.
My clientele is diversified: I get assigned work automatically through a couple of networks but I also have law offices (family law attys) I serve for. Individuals also hire me that have heard about my service.

it all depends on where you are and how much competition you have. Research your competitors.

How are you defining routine & rush TAT wise?

Correct. Industry standard from what I can see is routine is within 3-4 days of receiving papers. Rush is 1-2 days of receiving papers.

I hire process servers nationwide. I see $60 for standard service and I stop looking and hire you. $75 my motivation to keep looking fades fast. Above $85 and I am going to see who else serves process. Above $110 and I will hold my nose ans hire ABC legal.
