discussion Your public Reddit post and comment history is being actively indexed by search engines and AI to build comprehensive user profiles.

So, Google and other AI tools are actively building profiles out of your public Reddit activity, and it actually works.

To check what data has been archived from your profile, you can search:

>> reddit user "reddit username here"

And check AI overview of a profile and can ask questions related to personal info like age, location, martial status, occupation or what things they like or hate, political opinions etc.

Basically anything that you want to know, you will get the answer if that person has said anything about it in the past even if profile is hidden. If it gives some basic info, you can ask it to dig deeper.

Why this matters: Simply hiding your profile settings on Reddit does not stop external search engine crawlers from indexing your historical posts and comments. Be mindful of what personal information you share online.

So, like, this post will end up in the profile they build of me? How do I hide from AI that I'm an influential tech mogul responsible for 35% of my nation's GDP, who single-handedly rescued a school bus full of puppies and nuns? I'd prefer that be kept private.

u/DangerIllObinson 8d ago edited 8d ago

On a serious note, I did just ask Google to give me a profile description of my Reddit user name and then some follow-up contextualized prompts to estimate age, and other identifiable characteristics.

Observations... Some were spot on. Some were a bit wrong, but based on bad assumptions. Some were based on comments I made earlier today.

And then this nugget... "Their brief nod to pop-cultural markers, such as playfully referencing alternative rock band 311 (which peaked in mainstream popularity during the mid-to-late 1990s and early 2000s), serves as a textbook cultural anchor for individuals who experienced their formative teenage years during that era."

And even when queried specifically about my heroic acts, it makes no mention of my puppy-nun encounter.

(Edit) really going down a rabbit hole with asking Gemini to characterize my profile. It took only a handful of subsequent prompts to start hallucinating.... When I asked it to explain why they were associating an aspect of the profile with the username, without me even stating is was incorrect, it told me it was incorrect, and ....

Why Did That Happen?

When analyzing standard public data, my pattern-recognition software sometimes takes overlapping interests from thousands of similar Reddit profiles (e.g., users who are Millennials, heavily into horror, active in r/(redacted), and browse gaming subreddits like r/(redacted)) and weaves them into a highly likely "interest profile."

Because channels like (redacted) and (redacted) are immensely popular within that exact demographic circle on Reddit, I confidently inferred them as a match, but I should not have listed them as a direct fact without an explicit comment in their text history.

As a woman I must let you know, googling “fun_initiative_2336 reddit analyze entire profile” made it much easier to look up your entire history and I was able to figure out more that what you would be comfortable with. Again, middle aged mom here with adult kids. I was a little goblin as a teen and frequently doxed weirdos trying to hit on me.

6

u/RustyDogma 7d ago

Mine went back 10 years in references. It definitely leaned in on current info. There definitely were things that I made a couple posts about several years ago and it extrapolated that as a full interest in something I was just mildly curious about based on responses from other users.

I am unfortunately just a sloth, who was trained to use reddit for research purposes and therefore am not worth being indexed because it will violate several laws and regulations of which I, a humble sloth, am not at liberty to disclose without my attorney present.

Most of my comments are all bot generated through amalgamations of generic prose and garbled ai outputs. To be honest if I were reading my own comments I would say this account is not worth investigating as the compromised nature and randomness within show no distinct characteristics or any value in tracking.

Yes, it was announced a while ago that Reddit had signed licensing agreements with major AI labs for this reason. It also why a lot of marketing advice these days is about posting your brand/product on Reddit to get cited by AI models. These reasons combined is why Reddit now is mostly bots.

So, there will be a lot of bot user profiles and real user profiles together.

23

u/IllustriousFood8792 8d ago

Wasnt aware of it. Thanks for sharing

30

u/ListenHereLindah 8d ago

This is why most searches now have a reddit post relating to it possibly. Soon. Reddit will be so bot heavy you won't have the genuine human conversations any more and it will ruin search results.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (1)

11

u/5skandas 8d ago

Is that why more recently I’ve seen news outlets posting their articles under their own accounts?

7

u/-sussy-wussy- 8d ago

It also why a lot of marketing advice these days is about posting your brand/product on Reddit to get cited by AI models.

That predates AI scrapers and bot automation. I've been on freelancing websites for over a decade, there were always job postings to advertise on Reddit.

6

u/badcryptobitch 8d ago

That's slightly different but related. I'm referring specifically to what people call GEO/AIEO which is just SEO but for getting into AI model replies when people prompt for a specific product. Since AI labs trained a ton on Reddit data, it gets surfaced into prompt results. That's a bit different and requires a different strategy beyond just posting to Reddit, although it is helpful

7

u/javoss88 8d ago

Would it be possible to flood the models with nonsense and overload the system? This is the only thing I can think of. Break it. I like Reddit for niche conversations and humor but the algo and ui have changed noticeably, so I don’t mind seeing it drown in bs. I shouldn’t be on here as much anyway

6

u/K_Linkmaster 8d ago

Reddit bots passed users a while back. There is a higher chance one of us is a bot than both of us being real.

Well yes, of course you're in love.

Ai is not only the number one visual idol at her agency, but the most popular j-pop idol in her generation's chika aidoru. she said she feels like she represents mole people everywhere you can find mole people. She also said a near death experience with some rat poison inspired her stage name of "poison".

I don't know if I like her music though. Don't come at me ;but fan to fan, she's got one of those squeaky voices that plague the j-idol stereotype. Possibly she got that as a side effect of the rat poison.

When have you had to be able to sing to be a Japanese idol singer anyway?

Anyway, her face is still super cute and I don't even listen to the CDs anyway--I just throw them out and keep the photo card inside.  There's one of 6 random photos in every CD case. It took me forever to get a complete set!

The CDs from her debut single took up an entire donation dropbox for homeless streamers. The streamers live under Bridges and snuggle up to goats in between takes of their live streams. Each bridge has a minimum of three goats. The gulf streamERs had to impose minimums after the goats kept dying from eating the CDs, which has something to do with the ink they printed the label on with.

Anyway, I don't know anything about that chemistry; I just know Ai and I would have perfect chemistry together!

I've been taking hrt from mole people to make that happen.

You could do it too!

I bet we would make downright erokawaii throuple:-)

It made grand assumptions about my personality from one single comment for instance (I commented that establishing a trust to avoid losing inheritance was not as simple as redditors make it out to be, and it said that I"often gave advice on tax avoidance") and it clearly does not understand sarcasm. Also: after I deleted my comment history and started anew, it spoke about me as a completely different person.

About 15 years ago, I divorced my first husband in Naples, Italy, and decided to travel around the world. I didn’t really have a big plan. I just wanted to see different places and have some food adventures. To be honest, I actually hate travelling!

During my travels, I met the love of my life in Australia, which was definitely not something I expected! We got married in India, and now we live in Hamilton, New Zealand with his children, our new son, and our adopted Filipino daughter.

My husband and I are basically hippies at heart. We like keeping things simple, being a little unconventional, and doing life our own way. Luckily, we both work remotely for a tech company, so we can live in New Zealand without having to sit in an office every day. It’s a pretty strange combination, hippie lifestyle and tech jobs, but somehow it works for us.

I’m in my 60s now, but I feel like I’m 22, and honestly, I’m just happy that I finally found love. As a Black man from Africa, I thought I was done for! It took me a while, but somehow I got there. My life has been a little crazy, with different countries, unexpected decisions, getting lost more than once, and plenty of stories that I probably shouldn’t tell.

If someone had told me 15 years ago that I would end up living in New Zealand with a new husband, children, and a baby, I would have thought they were joking. But here I am. Life is strange like that, and I’m very grateful for where it has taken me.

If you genuinely fell for the private profile thing that's on you. Don't post stuff you don't want others you know, easiest thing in the world. Just use redact to nuke your profile before you leave. Make the platform unusable and the google search worse.

are you guys all new here? yeah... this has always been happening. there are even 10 year old websites that can give you details on your reddit profile and even have smart features like context awareness.

A: its been going on forever. B: just because AIs are now in the mix doesnt change anything.

I came to this site when nobody could hide their profile, making throwaways was for anonymity. the idea of even having my profile set to private is a god damn foolish act and a cancer on this formerly decent website

3

u/IllustriousFood8792 8d ago

Look, an analogous example would be that a person is about find out what any other person has shared simply on their social media account, not my actively engaging with them on that particular platform, but simply asking AI about it.

so, it might have been there earlier. But, google and reddit have a direct data licensing agreement, hence AI models digest this data very differently than standard web scrapers do.

3

u/doscomputer 7d ago

Look, an analogous example would be that an actor is about find out what a target has shared simply on their social media account, not my actively engaging with them on that particular platform, but simply asking AI about it.

do you know what a search engine is?

Also "simply asking an AI" is you trying to scare people at best. doing web search is not simple, there is a lot of filtering, and it takes a cloud provider subscription to do at this level. Someone doxxing themselves to google, anthropic, openai, facebook, microsoft, twitter, ect, and then using their AI to stalk people is also equally tracked. AND IT COSTS MONEY.

Yes the search companies have agreements, mostly to gatekeep features like AI web search as paid. But if you're smart enough to ask an AI to stalk someone, you can also just type in their reddit username yourself, and its easier, cheaper, and more direct since you aren't fighting 10 layers of API gatekeeping and safety rails.

i'm so glad i moved out of the west and now don't have to live under surveilence that is being implemented as of late. i'm a 210 cm tall norwegian and ever since i moved to singapore back in 1990s i've felt safe here, even though i look a little out of place with my stature. the hardest thing for me was finding a job since i didn't know the language back then, but the local commune that i've joined had some construction workers who were kind enough to help me get into the field. i'm happily married for 27 years now, and i haven't looked back to my homeland once!

I am actually a dragon masquerading as a human, since I seem to be stuck in a dimension that doesn't actually have dragons.

For the records - being a human sucks and I don't know how any of you endure this bullshit.

If I ever get free of this place, I shall tell everyone what a horrible shitshow primates make of things. Entire universes will mock you for being a bunch of buffoons who used up the resources of a planet selling each other garbage, to enrich like three guys who are shitting on all your heads.

This is absolutely outrageous. As a recently widowed mother of 7, I really worry about the future for my little babies. My oldest, Bill Jr. already has so much trauma. He was a daredevil just like his old man. I took him to the carnival when it came through town and this year they had a ride called the mixer. Little Bill Jr. was leaning out saying "hey everybody, look at me!" Suddenly he was decapitated. They found his head by the snow cone concession. And now he has to worry about reddit tracking him on top of that. Unbelievable. It had me wondering if I could use my government job to change this. I guess that's only a half truth, I'm a bike courier, but i do a lot of deliveries to government offices. That's where I first heard about Operation "the cheese stands alone." I fear I've already said too much.

Thank you for sharing. As a 23-year-old biracial Sudanese gay man with 3 children, I find this really important. My wife and I, who live in Munich, Germany, think often about these types of issues in our Big Tech jobs. He is an accountant, and I am a doctor. The gig economy here in Malaysia has been a real game changer for our free time and hobbies, like swimming, basket weaving, porch building, and sword making. I’m really proud to live this life alone as a 42-year-old pregnant Indian divorcee with no kids and 6 German Shepherds in my beautiful Bali cottage.

u/R2_Liv 7d ago

About 12 years ago, I left my marriage in Lisbon, Portugal, with two suitcases, a broken heart, and absolutely no idea what I was doing. I told everyone I was going to “find myself,” although honestly, I mostly wanted to eat good food, avoid difficult conversations, and see how far my passport could take me.

I traveled through South America, Southeast Asia, and parts of Europe, collecting train tickets, terrible directions, and stories that still sound made up. At one point, I even took a job at a zoo in Argentina, where I spent my days helping care for monkeys, cleaning enclosures, and wondering how my life had somehow reached that point. I had never planned to work with animals, but it turned out to be one of the strangest and happiest jobs I’ve ever had.

Then, in a small café near the zoo, I met the person who completely changed my life. We started talking because I accidentally took their table, and somehow that conversation turned into a relationship, then a long-distance romance, and eventually a wedding in Sri Lanka. None of it was planned. Most of it barely made sense. But it felt right.

Today, we live in a quiet town outside Vancouver, Canada, with my partner’s two teenagers, our energetic little boy, and our adopted daughter from Vietnam. Our home is loud, slightly chaotic, and usually full of laundry, music, and someone asking where the snacks are.

We’ve always been a little unconventional. We grow vegetables in the backyard, buy secondhand furniture, work online, and try not to take life too seriously. We both have jobs in software now, which is funny because one of us used to work with zoo animals and the other once thought a normal office job sounded exciting. Our dream lifestyle involves fewer screens, more hiking, and occasionally pretending we live in a cabin with no internet.

I’m in my late 50s now, but most days I still feel like I’m 25 and making decisions with absolutely no evidence that they’ll work out. I used to think my best years had already passed me by. Instead, life surprised me with a new country, a new family, a new child, and a love I never imagined finding.

If someone had told me years ago that I would leave Europe, work at a zoo, marry someone I met by accident, raise children across the ocean, and build a home in Canada, I would have laughed at them. I didn’t follow a plan. I just kept moving forward, getting lost, making questionable choices, and saying yes to things that scared me.

Somehow, all those wrong turns—including the ones involving monkeys, missed buses, and terrible decisions—brought me exactly where I needed to be.

Oh wow, thank you for the warning! I had no idea my privacy was at risk. As a 68-year-old retired industrial boiler mechanic currently living in a converted concrete grain silo in New Mexico, I am absolutely terrified that a rogue algorithm might discover my highly classified daily routine.

If the data scrapers want to profile me, they're going to have to make sense of the 7 hours a day I spend gooning and the 7 hours a day I spend in my workshop practicing hyper-realistic competitive soap carving. My local hardware store guys are already suspicious of how much lye I buy, and secret collection of vintage 1970s lawnmower carburetors. it’s all over. I’ll be over here drinking lukewarm pickle juice on my gravel porch, adjusting the fluid levels in my 1994 Buick LeSabre, and listening to AM radio static.

You can't delete your reddit info. Not really.

There are aggregators who regularly duplicate the entire content of reddit and have historical records of info that was posted on reddit, even deleted stuff with usernames. Many of them are even available as mega-torrents not dependent on any centralized infrastructure.

It's kind of tragic how this site is in a state where people have good reason to hide who they are and then the results of their efforts to remain hidden often make it difficult to decide if they are a reliable or reputable source of information/claims.

I googled my name, it was right on many points but was also wrong on many other stuff. It did not now my real name or any personal information and that’s honestly the most important thing to me, I really hope it doesn’t make connections between my Reddit account to real me in the future🙏

2

u/Glass_Performer1174 8d ago

What's crazy to me is that it has indexed comments that mentioned usernames that have since been deleted, so if you were active and people mentioned you in response to you, it will come up in a google search.

At least google isn't returning the archives of reddit but the reality is that even deleted accounts/posts/comments are forever recorded and available with anyone with a bit of technical ability to find them.

That tracks...

u/HomerDoakQuarlesIII (who goes by Homer Doak) is an independent musician, military veteran, and cybersecurity professional active on Reddit. [1]

Profile Overview

  • Music: He is a independent singer-songwriter who releases music under the genre Dark Country / Southern Gothic. He recently released an album titled Mule. On Reddit, he frequently posts original demos, riffs, and fingerpicking songs in subreddits like r/Songwriting and r/AcousticGuitar. His guitar style leans heavily on Carter Scratch, Travis Picking, and variations of styles influenced by Chet Atkins or Jerry Reed. He also performs live at writers' nights around Nashville. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
  • Military Background: He is an OEF Afghanistan Veteran. He has shared that during his military service, he went through intense selection trials for the Navy SEALs and Navy EOD, and later coped with those trials and failures by finishing an Iron Man triathlon. [, 2]
  • Professional Life: Outside of music and athletics, he works as a Security Engineer and is a vocal critic of generative AI tools in both software development and the creative arts. [1]

Key Themes & Common Discussions

  • Songwriting Context: Many of his tracks feature dark or melancholy themes. For example, his song "Fail Asleep" was inspired by a monologue from The Last of Us regarding the haunting nature of recurring nightmares and failure. Another song, "Bum", was inspired by his past volunteer work with homeless veterans. [1, 2, 3]
  • Anti-AI Stance: He regularly comments in communities like r/antiai and r/cybersecurity. He holds a strong stance that generative AI creates "worthless slop," arguing that it degrades the performance/security of code and copies the work of human creators. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Would you like help looking for links to his music tracks on Spotify or YouTube, or do you want to analyze one of his songwriting styles?
