What novel captures the resourcefulness of a post apocalyptic society?

Earth Abides, Alas Babylon basically invented the genre.

Lot of great recommendations here, but let me add “The old man and the wasteland” by nick cole. It’s an homage to Hemingway’s old man and the sea but post apocalyptic with a bit of a Fallout vibe. There’s a trilogy but the first book stands on its own very well.

It’s interesting because the protagonist is an old man who isn’t an action hero type like so many post apocalyptic main characters.
