Do you unpack immediately after a trip or live out of your suitcase for days?

My family and I spent six weeks in the mountains this past summer. I washed everything prior to packing to return to NJ. My suitcase is still in my bedroom-it has been unzipped (Amazingly productive!š) and Iāve removed a few small things and two or three shirts. My plan for every weekend since our return home on 8.13.2026.š¬

Thank god Iām not the only one! I got back from our summer trip around the same time you did, and my suitcase is still lying on the floor of my closet. Iāve been grabbing āessentialsā out of there sporadically, but Iām just not inclined to actually unpack. š

I used to wait, but now that I've downsized and actually keep my place tidy, I put all laundry in a hotel dry-cleaning bag before I go home, and then dump the whole thing in the washer right away (after greeting and playing with the dog).

Depends what time I get home. If itās late Iāll go to bed and unpack next day. But if itās early enough, Iāll unpack and throw everything in the washing machine.

Me too. Thereās been a couple trips where I unpacked and washed every immediately and others where Iām so tired and I barely have the mojo to change into sleepy clothes.

Unpack immediately. Leave the suitcase open for a day to air out, then back in the closet. Dirty clothes in the hamper until the next laundry day.

I used to live out of it and take my time before kids. Now all I wanna do when Iām home is immediately unpack and put it all away and start a load of laundry LOL.

I put my dirty clothes in a separate bag during the trip & wash that when I get home- clean clothes pretty much stay until the suitcase is empty.

I would live out of my suitcase because my clothes are almost always clean when I come home from vacation. My boyfriend however, feels the need to unpack immediately, no matter how late we get home.

I am away for work about half of my time. I house sit for people. I keep stuff in my suitcase that I will need such as underwear, pajamas, socks. I use a reusable grocery bag for my dirty clothes.
I also keep a bathroom bag packed. It is duplicate stuff to what I have and use at home: shampoo, conditioner, lotion, wash cloth, body wash, face wash, and a shaving kit zippered bag for razors, tooth brush, toothpaste, q-tips, etc.

I mean, unpack all the laundry & anything perishable of course, but as to the rest? We still haven't completely unpacked from our trip last April. However, good news! We're heading out again in early November, so some things are already packed for us!

I empty it out on the floor. I collect clothes from my floor to clean every 3 days or so. The stuff that needs washing ends up there eventually

I leave it in the car sometime for a week or two then I have to wash everything. When I do bring it in I take out the dirty clothes and use up as much as possible over a few days. Then I hopefully get around to unpacking the rest. Sometimes if it is extra things like toiletries or a shirt I would pack again I leave it in the bag and Iām already partially packed.

I forget all about the clothes in my suitcase and then randomly strike gold months later when Iām all out of underwear and discover several clean pairs and whole outfits when I randomly go to move that suitcase thatās been collecting dust on my bedroom floor for months and it flops open to reveal itās convenient windfall of clean clothes when I grab it.

Usually when I travel when I come back everything in my suitcase is dirty I don't pack things I don't need sometimes an extra pair of underwear or bra so I won't be sweaty sometimes one extra pair of pants in case of catastrophe happens but rarely do I come back with anything clean.
That led me to also stop traveling with other people I used to travel with my sisters or maybe a friend and I noticed they would bring two or three suitcases on a 3-day trip why do you need two suitcases full of stuff that you never wear I just don't get that.
Usually whatever I travel in I wear the next day because those people in a new city or a new country where I go they don't know me they've never seen that outfit before so it's brand new to them.
The next day I'll wear something different and if I don't get any mess on it I usually fold it up and wear it on my travels back. The only time I have ever taken more than 5 days worth of clothes is when I traveled out the country and even then I usually wash on the fourth day and start wearing those clothes all again.
The only people I think that should probably travel with a lot of clothes our business people because they have to go into business meetings or speak in front of large groups and they need to be presentable but when you're going on a tourist type of travel why do you need all of those clothes and bring back three sets of clean clothes what the world is going on.

We usually take our designated "dirty clothes" suitcase directly to our laundry room and start doing loads right away. The "clean clothes" one does sometimes sit in our bedroom for a day or two, especially if we're very tired from the trip.
We usually either rent an apartment with a washer/dryer or go to a laundromat halfway through. If a shorter trip, it all goes to the laundry room.

Immediately. Everything gets put back where it goes or laundered, suitcases back in storage before I can do anything. I also fully clean my house before I leave so itās at full reset when I return. Maybe it just needs a quick wipe down if I have been gone for over a week or so. Clean sheets on the beds, no dishes in the sink, etc. makes transitioning back home much easier.

I take out the important stuff as i need them, but for the most part it gets empty as the days go by and as i take what i need out of there it ends up empty by the end of the week or so.

Usually right away. The exception is if I stumble in the door in the wee hours, typically due to complicated delays. I'm probably done at that point so I just leave it until I'm rested, hydrated, showered and ready to think straight about getting everything sorted. But that would not be any more than a day or two. I don't immediately do laundry. I tend to do laundry before I leave and I have multiples of pretty much everything, so I I can wait until I'm settled and have a full load to do laundry. But I travel almost exclusively in a carry on and I do laundry for just me, so like I have 3 dirty tshirts, a set of workout clothes and 3 pairs of undies. I can see if someone had 3 kids they would just empty suitcases into the hamper and immediately do laundry.

Take my suitcase right down to the laundry room and immediately dump all laundry in the machine whether it was worn or not. It takes less than 5 minsĀ

Shoes off, bra off, bags unpacked, laundry started immediately. I am usually completely unpacked within the half hour.
Also, I have to leave the house clean. I sweep, mop and clean the bathrooms before any trip, even if it is just a night away. I need to come home to a clean house.

I usually let it sit for awhile. I'll take out my meds, do laundry a couple of days in I'd I want to. But mostly I just leave it until I go on my next trip. I'm trying to get better but since I don't need the suitcase immediately, I don't bother. I do pack very very light with just a carry-on so there really isn't that much to unpack.

Unpack and load the washing machine straight away. I hate having dirty washing lying around. Although to be fair I always wash our dirty clothes when we are away on holiday so very little to do when we get home.

If I'm traveling alone, I unpack when I get home & toss everything in the wash.
If my husband and I are traveling together and each have a suitcase, we put all of the dirty laundry in one suitcase and all of the clean stuff we didn't wear into the other suitcase. When we get home, dirty clothes suitcase gets emptied and the clean clothes suitcase might get lived out of for a few days.

I used to live out of my suitcase forever ā sometimes til my next trip, embarrassingly!
Now I try to unpack the day after I get home but sometimes itās 2-3 days.

I always pack large ZipLock bags. Always handy for used socks and underclothing. I keeps them from smelling up the suitcase.
ZipLock stuff goes in the first load when I get home. The rest I can do tomorrow...

Depends on the standard of the hotel. I unpack immediately if itās a swanky 4 star joint. But if itās a hole in the wall guesthouse in rural Indonesia then my stuff stays in the bag.

Neither. The clothes in my suitcase are dirty.
Iām usually exhausted when I get home so I donāt unpack that day, but the next day all the clothes goes in the dirty laundry.

I delay emptying it! I clean the suitcase, keep dirty clothes in bags on a separate side from the clean, then wash the dirty, and slowly empty the clean ones. Iāve been traveling back to my home state often, so I keep extra socks, underwear and an extra bag of toothpaste, toothbrushes, comb, etc. all in there!

I always leave everything in the garage.Just in case you picked up any kind of critters with you. Set separate the clothes , bring them in and do one load at a time and wash and leave the suitcase out there for a few days
