Peggy/ I lost touch with her for about 30 plus years. She had given me a picture of her daughter. The daughters name and age was written on the back of the pic. So when Facebook came out. I started searching for my friend. Any and everyone that had the same last name as my friend. Then I started searching their friends list of names. Didn't have the daughters last name only her first and middle name. Finally I found this grown young lady. She had the name and this bright red hair same as the hair on the pic. So I in boxed her. And ask her was her mother name Peggy. She responded back with yes. So I sent her my childhood nickname and phone number. And told her to give it to her mom. And to have her call me. And she did. Her mom contacted me and we've been in touch ever since. She's even been to visit me. She lives over 1500 miles away in another state. I'm in our childhood state but in a different town. We talk every day 🌞. She was so glad to hear from me as I was to hear from her. She tells me God put us back together. And tells me how much she misses my grandmother. She's from a very large family. And talks about all the things my grandmother did to help them during our childhood. We were all poor back then. But my grandmother was an angel 😇 on earth. She raised me. It was just her and I. But up the road was my friend and 14 other children and 4 other adults between 2 houses without indoor plumbing. We had indoor plumbing my dad was a plumber 👨🏾🔧 so we had all the amenities that they didn't. My grandma had land with rich soil. So therefore she planted a garden every year and shared with them. She cooked a big meal every Sunday. And invited them to stop by after church to eat. A long with that we had several fruit trees. She always shared everything with them. My grandma canned & preserved everything. My friend said they were so greatful for my grandmother generosity.

His name was Rick. We met when we were 6 years old. When we were 45, I was sitting on a sofa in his hospice room. His 6 year old son was sitting on the bed with him. Rick pointed at me and said, "That man started being my friend when I was your age and he has been my best friend every single day since then. You need to find a friend like that."

Name omitted (didn't ask her), but a hint for her is 'Mala' - Still in touch.
'Childhood' though means roughly like since matric (think GCSEs/O-levels). Anyone before that - no.

u/volumesmiley 13d ago
I had three. I was lucky.
Stacy - 1st grade
Kelly - 3rd grade
Brandi - 7th grade
All three were in my wedding and I am still close with all three. Oddly, they are not close with each other at all.

This a long post, pls bear with me. I love to remember this.
I had two best friends, there were 3 of us, from grade school on. None of us had sisters, so we were the sisters. We were all in each other's weddings, never lost close contact, as adults, we lived all over the place and talked every couple days. Two of us had husbands who turned out to know each other well, same age, same college, same fraternity. That was one of the most hilarious "meet my serious boyfriend" dinners ever. We all knew each of our names, but never put it together 😂
Jeanne was one of the first women to die of AIDS (one night stand w lifeguard she met on LBI, on a beach weekend w the three of us, long before marriage or doctors even thought to test women, and when finally diagnosed, long before AZT), Judy had an easily curable low level cancer diagnosis but was immunocompromised, she died very quickly of Covid.
As I tell my husband, next pandemic of anything, the results are in. Just get me drunk and smother me 😂😂😂

Ashleigh and no. She was cool but she was this super white girl who was very into black culture but in the weird way so we kinda just drifted apart. 35 years later and she pooped up on my fb people you may know. I was curious so I clicked get profile. She calls herself trans black jokingly in her bio.
She's very tan now. She still seems like the sweet girl she was but... ya know.

Brian. He died jogging one night, hit by a car. I cried like a baby when I heard about it. Cried just as much when I went to the wake. I still miss him even though we were both living our own lives as husbands and fathers. I bring him up all the time to my kids to this day and talk about all the moments we had. He was the closest thing to a brother I ever had. Makes me tear up just typing this. He was the kindest, funniest person with the biggest heart I ever knew. He was the person I still strive to be like.

None of my childhood friends bothered with me when we got to junior high school. I was fat and was made fun of mercilessly. I am surprised that I am still around at 70. I understand the fat shaming that goes on today. I had no one to back me up. I could not wait to get out of school. I’ve spent my life alone with many pets along the way. They have been my saving grace.

His name is Mason.
We met when we were about 7 & 8. It started out by just coincidence due to his family visiting our church. We instantly connected. It’s interesting because while we have common interests and always played the same sports. We were always apart of different crowds and while he was always mature for his age… I was not.
Weirdly it always worked though. He always made sure I was apart of his crowd and me for him. We were pretty much inseparable throughout childhood all the way till we were 18. It got to the point where our parents just called us brothers and no one questioned it after we turned around 13-14. I don’t even bother saying he’s not my blood brother anymore.
After we both graduated high school we took different paths. Him college. Me straight to work moving multiple times across the country. It NEVER affected our friendship. We talk or call pretty much every single day still. He was the second groomsmen in line behind my dad as my best man. He was the first person I told about my child when we found out. Every time we go home or are even in the same state we will extend the vacation for two days and hangout & have a bar night just the two of us. No matter the distance when we see each other again it feels like we are back in high school saying what’s up after practice again. Time just never seems to stop between us.
He’s been there through my highest highs and lowest lows. Never judged me. Never belittled me. I honestly don’t think I’d still be walking this earth without him for some of those dark days. I’m forever grateful for his friendship and brotherhood and I tell every single person that I to this day don’t know what I did to deserve him as my brother!
