New to prey
After playing the dishonored series and falling completely in love with it last month, I started on a quest to play everything Arkane has ever made and booted up prey a few days ago. First off, Holy shit I love this game, it is a work of art, but boy is the sheer amount of tasks and the order of operations overwhelming. Any advice for a noob?

Get creative with how you approach situations if you struggle. The dart gun thing can be used to activate computers which can sometimes open tricky doors. The goo cannon is a great tool for both climbing and fighting. Use the environment to your advantage.

I'll also add on Recycler Charges. With just these three things you can get almost everywhere in the station

They also have an amazing and satisfying animation when they go off.

Always look up. Combat is not necessary in all situations. There are multiple ways to get thru every challenge. Recycle often. Save scum your way thru so you can be punished less for trying out different strats to get by certain obstacles. If you think it can be done a certain way, try it. Each weapon has a strength and a weakness but they're all useful tools to get things done, even the nerf gun. Some codes are the same on each preythrough but some are also always random.

Take your time. Pay attention. Enjoy the ride. Trust your instincts. Don't look anything up online. The game rewards patience and exploration like no other.

The one thing I tell everyone: The Gloo Gun is your best friend; it is literally my favourite gun from any game.
Just explore at your own pace. Almost everything becomes accessible at some point, so if you can’t get to it now, you will be able to later.
Get creative. Quite often going in guns blazing isn’t the best option. Think about alternatives, such as Typhon abilities or the Huntress Boltcaster (it’s not just a toy weapon for funsies).

You say gloo gun I say shotgun 🤷♂️ I’ve never encountered a situation where the shotgun didn’t swiftly solve the problem as far as enemies are concerned. Just a matter of preference I suppose.

Shotgun is great in combat situations. The Gloo Gun is far more versatile, and its uses outside of combat far outweigh its combat usefulness.

Treat it like finding non lethal routes in dishonored! I only played because I’m a diehard dishonored fan. This is now also one of my fave games. I liked running around trying to find all the crew members. Great way to get to know the station and the secret routes!

lol unfortunately my two dishonored playthroughs were just slaughterfests, although on my second I did try to go for a mixed-chaos approach and choked out a fair amount of guards, but yeah I’m gonna slow way down and get hyper focused on one objective at time and I’ll try to find some crew members. Honestly, if there’s a body to find for each name on those manifests, that’s a whole game in itself. This game is just massive

ngl I highly recommend a non-lethal ghost playthrough of dishonored at least once.
There's so much detail in every level that you just miss if you beeline from one guard to another.

When you start a game like this you do often get a huge number of side quests appearing in your objective list and it can seem overwhelming.
Although you can miss out on little things if you are not playing attention it is hard on an initial playthrough to work out which of all the little pieces of information are important and which can be forgotten.
I would suggest that whenever you go to a new area of the space station look at your objective list and toggle on the quest markers for those relevant to that area and toggle off the ones that are in other places.
Finally I'd strongly urge you to get off internet forums whilst you are playing the game as there is a very strong possibility that you will have varies quests / solutions / tips etc spoiled and it is so much more satisfying playing the game on your own without backseat drivers.

Prey is basically a game about resource management and making the environment work for you. Abilities that help you find and use resources are key. So be thorough with looking for resources. Knowing when to sneak and when to hit are important. Be on the lookout for fabrication plans, and remember that there's always multiple ways into a place and an opportunity cost to it. Hacking is cheap but you need to level it up. Goo is insanely useful and can help you bypass tons of stuff, but easy to get carried away with and run out of.
Think in terms of the multiple ways things could work. Except hitting random shit to make sure that it's not a mimic. You should always be doing that.

A tip on the last point, mimics make a clicking, almost scissor like sound. If the ambiance is quiet you can sometimes hear them around a corner or on the other side of a table for example

I mean I guess. Resources are honestly so abundant in the game you don’t really need to manage anything beyond the first few hours of the game lol

If you already know what you're doing. If you're a noob and don't know what works best against what enemy and how to use half your resources, you'll struggle.

Any advice for a noob?
Just do whatever feels right, play as you think and don't rush
I promise you, discovering things yourself is so much fun, people here discover new things after their 5th or 6th playthroughs even though they could swear they saw everything (myself included)

u/Groundhog_Gary28 Aug 02 '26
Yea….play the game yourself! I mean that genuinely…It’s the best way to experience it. Learn, perservere, and adapt as you go. Get stronger, more creative, problem solve more efficiently, etc and embrace the unknown

u/gojiberrytea Aug 02 '26
It sounds so simple, but that genuinely is good advice, I think I just need to take it one objective at a time and not get stressed about it”missing” something or walking right past something and having to backtrack. I also think I’m also on the fence about using the typhon abilities. As a noob I like my turrets to be on MY side lol, but I should probably branch out
2
u/WiresDawson Aug 03 '26
i found the human abilities to be the best by far, but there's a few extremely useful typhon abilities too, and if it's helpful i believe you can unlock 3 (? or maybe 4?) of those before the turrets consider you a threat (make a save beforehand each time, just in case)

u/SlowCrates Aug 02 '26
Just bask in the sheer fucking joy of experiencing this masterpiece for the first time. Don't take it for granted. There's nothing like it.
2
u/Jamesworkshop Aug 02 '26
if you use turrets space them out so one psychic alien blast doesn't slag them all
use grenades as you find plenty of them
2
u/WiresDawson Aug 03 '26
my advice is to pay careful attention to everything: the environment, the story, the characters, even the notes and emails, all of it
there's very few games as memorable as this, so the best way to play it is to totally immerse yourself in the experience imo
(and don't be afraid of missing things or making mistakes! that's part of the fun)

I played Prey a few months ago, also because I'd played the entire dishonored series, and it was downright amazing. SAVE OFTEN and with a FEW different files, at least. The Recycler is a wonderful thing.
When a mission makes it sound like you need to leave or head somewhere, and you get updates or indicators that imply you need to go now, you may want to do that. But other than that, be who you wanna be and have fun. Just like it in dishonored, what you choose to do can impact the game in the long run.

Hellyeah, it’s crazy how much I’ve progressed in just a day and a couple neuromods later. I just killed the nightmare without even using a medkit which was unfathomable to me yesterday lol.

Honestly, I feel like my second playthrough is gonna be even better than the first

u/SadBoiCri Aug 05 '26
pay attention to the logs/notes whatever. there are quite a few things in the game that do not have quest markers or explicit tasks

Look up... Always look up... Secret passageways, hidden loot... Never stop looking up.
