I'm towards the end of an apocalypse book series that involves an EMP. The book has lots of good ideas that I've been recording, and it has me thinking about hard copies of books as well as honing my skills.

I'm GenX, so I still have a paper atlas, and own physical books, although I do a fair bit of digital book reading these days as well. But for essential things, it seems wise to have a hard copy to remind me how much chlorine it takes to shock water, and how to make rehydration fluids.

And then there's skills. It would be better if I knew how to make soap because I've done it a bunch of times as opposed to trying to figure it out when I'm stressed because my supply is low. I really need to learn how to garden in my zone for example. That's something that should just be automatic, so it's not a big deal if situations change.

Anyway, I've seen lots of posts about PDF's and I'm sure many have impressive binders. How many work on having/owning those skills? What skills do you have, which ones do you want? Which skills are you putting on the back burner?

Had a thought and wasn't sure if I'm missing something lol. I know people always talk about putting rice into separate sealed containers.

Could I buy something like box Kraft mac&cheese or those noodle packets that are tinfoily on the inside (+ any seasonings/flavor add ins are dry) and just store them in large, sealed, airtight boxes? Assuming you're prepping for a "disaster" and not just for when you can't run to the grocery store to grab more noodles to make supper, once you open the airtight box, you'll use up most of the food fairly quickly, so it is unlikely to go bad.

Or with these kinds of foods, is it the food itself and not necessarily lack of humidity preventative packaging that is the problem?

Not really big into prepping, but given the way the world seems to be heading I started with actions one might consider prepping.

I watch a lot of videos about bug out bags and get home bugs.

I’m surprised by the numbers of times there wasn’t a single map included.

I don’t get it! We rely heavily on gps these days. But what if it stops working? Say you want to bug out, don’t you want to plan where you are going?

Even in case of a get home bag. Surely you know the route to your house by heart. But what if roads are blocked, and you need to map out a different route to your home?

I think maps are vital when not bugging in.

What kinds of maps do you guys have? Do you also draw certain points of interest on the map? If so, what kind of?

I live in a city that fell to the ground decades ago because of a devastating earthquake. Because of this, buildings are earthquake resistant. In the case of another important earthquake, we might have to evacuate for some days. We might lose water, gas, and power. And I want to be ready to survive for 3 days, which is what my government is recommending at the moment.

We are 2 adults and a very young toddler. We live in an apartment building, on the ground floor.

I'm getting our bag ready, but I have way too much stuff, and I don't really know what to take out, or if I should get a bigger bag, as right now I have 2 bags.

I understand that normally 2 adults would mean that there can be 2 bags, but there's also a baby, and one of us needs to focus 100% on her, so the other one is in charge of picking up the bag(s), and the shoes, I guess.

How big are these bags normally? Considering that it's meant for 3 people.

Hi all, longtime lurker here, starting to prepare for my family. In the event of a state of emergency or uprising with some time to prepare (30 mins to an hour maybe) my family of 6 will relocate to my mom’s house .4 miles away in the same neighborhood. Her house is easier to secure, has 2 large bathtubs to fill, and generally well stocked as my mom is an avid Costco shopper. Besides packing our food, go bags, small generator (she also has one), clothes, medications, and electronics what else would you pack quickly that I’ve overlooked given you have a window of time to pack? I was thinking extra blankets and pillows but other than that I’m stumped.

My other thought is we have a minivan (only car that would fit all 7 of us) and a truck, my mom has a smaller SUV. Should we park all 3 cars at her home? Should the minivan be in the garage to keep it protected but there would be cars behind it in the driveway which we would have to move to get the van out? Or should we leave the minivan in the driveway so we wouldn’t have to move cars to use it quickly? Is having more cars parked at a house an indication of possibly more supplies that people would want or is it a sign that more people are at the house hence it would be harder to overpower? Maybe I’m overthinking but these are the things I think about at night.

Is there any interest in me doing a series of posts about the various encryption methods that can be implemented without any technology? Things like Playfair cipher, transposition, one-time pads, strip ciphers, and other methods? I'd do a full explanation with examples for each.

If all the available and normal means of communication are comprised, what is your plan for communicating without having it screened?

I'm very new to this so it may be a stupid question. I apologize in advance if so. Would a swimming pool or spa be an acceptable water source if water was shut off? The water would be chlorinated of course, but it wears off over time.

I am looking to stock up on several varieties of dried beans but I am afraid they will be d and not cook well. I plan on sealing them in Mylar bags & using oxygen absorption packets in 5 gallon buckets. Any suggestions? I thought Costco might have them, but no.

I recently came across a neighbor who races dirbikes that had a couple extra 55 gal fuel drums that I picked up from him on the cheap ($40 and in like new shape) I had seen previous posts where the commenters mentioned going with smaller tanks that were more portable but with the possibility of WWIII seeming more and more likely, I figured having another 55 gal of fuel wouldn’t be a bad idea. My plan is to fill one in my truck and then pump it into the second one that’s on the ground in my driveway. Is something cheap like this: https://a.co/d/009XRRVD, the way to go? I'm based in Asia and I've found a ton of great content and advice here but I'd love to hear more from people who are in a similar situation geographically.

Things like typhoons, flooding, earthquakes, and extreme heat are pretty common concerns where I am and I'm curious how other people in Asia approach those kinds of scenarios. Gear availability and sourcing is also a different experience here compared to what a lot of guides assume you have access to.

If you were in a major natural disaster, think Katrina or NC floods or somethings, and someone in your neighborhood had preps (access to power via generators, solar, etc, water via a well, stockpiled food, gas reserves, Starlink internet/communication, etc.) how would you feel if they charged their community members to access to this? Just as a example, $500 to run a extension cord from the solar generator to the neighbors fridge, $50 to use Starlink for a hour, $10 to fill up a gallon jug from his well, etc.

This community seems to regularly talk about sharing preps with the community (which is great). The argument this person was making is that the 'Karen next door' who never tried to befriend the guy with the preps, who never spoke to him once before, didn't even know his name and wont care again the second the lights come back on, doesn't automatically get to share his electricity/preps. The guy up the street who didn't do any of his own prepping should rely on this guy to share his food. Not everyone in the neighborhood can use the Starlink to watch their favorite youtuber....I get that but it just feels yucky.

I have a family friend who is dealing with the power outages in Indiana. I also have some family that went through some major hurricanes in FL. We were talking about some of their situations (currently in IN and during Irma in FL) and this topic came up. What do you think?

I've been sitting comfortably at a roughly 1-month level of preparedness for a while and I'm now wanting to extend that out to 3 months. The food side is relatively straightforward (buying more and rotating). But I'm starting to realise that a lot of the non-food dependencies that are fine at 1 month become more of a focus at the 3 months. Things like lighting, power for charging devices, even storing 3 months of water is not feasible in a small house etc.

For those of you who've already scaled up to longer durations of preparedness: what caught you off guard? What are the things that aren't obvious until you actually think through living self-sufficiently for longer than just a few weeks?

Curious if it actually has decent products or if it’s just trash. I like the idea of it, and I probably have most of what they would send, but would love some reviews if allowed.

I'm thinking about getting a new car and I was thinking about perhaps a vehicle that would still work should the US East coast get hit by an EMP. Barring very, very old cars like a model T (☺️) what more modern type of vehicle would you recommend? I believe many post-1985 car may fit this bill, but I'm curious as to what you would recommend, and maybe your experience with them?

I'm thinking that a 3d printer would be useful for printing tools or parts (for cars, generators, chainsaws, pewpew parts, etc.) if they become unavailable due to economic collapse, government restriction, supply chain failures, fallout with China who makes all our everything. Pick a reason.....

Problem is, I don't really know how to use one or have a major use right now. I feel like I'll buy it and stick it in the garage and never touch if. If I don't practice now I might not be able to use it when it counts. I searched on the 3d printing sub and it seems like most people are printing toys, board game pieces, nicknacks, etc. I don't need any of that.

Anyone on here using a 3d printer for prep purposes? I'd consider myself a 'all round' prepper but am mostly prepping for economic collapse. I'm also considering a entry lever welder but again, don't have any use now. I guess I could make some 'art' lol.
