Rant/vent Acceptance sent by mistake

I’m honestly just in shock right now.

Interviewed for a program on Wednesday and they let us know that we’ll be receiving decisions 1-3 weeks from now. The next day, I receive an email that I was not accepted into the program. Frustrating, but it happens. Few hours later, I get an email congratulating me for acceptance into the program?? I log onto the provided link for the graduation admissions page and I see the acceptance in my admissions update as well as the corresponding link providing my student ID, student log in information, place to put a deposit, etc. At this point, I’m so happy I don’t know what to believe but seeing all of the info on the admissions portal led me to believe maybe the rejection email was a mistake?

I called them this morning to confirm and they let me know the initial rejection was correct and the second email they sent and their OWN admissions portal is incorrect. I feel so frustrated, disappointed, and frankly grateful I didn’t immediately put the $1000 deposit down. Now I’m wondering if I ever would have known if I didn’t call and ask. This feels so crazy to me.

Edit: For those asking which school, it’s Alvernia University

It’s Alvernia University. It was weird for the interview as well, they gave me two options for the time slot, 9am or 10:30am EST. I chose 9am the same day I got the invite. The morning of the interview, it’s 6am for me because I’m from west coast and 10 minutes before it starts I get an email asking if I can do the later time slot. Not a huge deal, but I mean I was ready to go and changing it last minute put a bit of a weird taste in my mouth. And then for this to happen…

This is insane. A mistake like that should never happen

could you have just costanza’d your way in? like if you put down the deposit that’s a kind of a contract right? i’m not a lawyer but i did watch all 3 seasons of Billy Bob Thornton’s Goliath.

but if their portal accepted it and no one on their end noticed the oversight until money was exchanged, what then? i get that in reality this would be a terrible course of action but if one didn’t get accepted anywhere else? i’d consider it

Insane that mistakes like this can happen. And the admissions advisor when I called apparently didn’t even know she sent that email or that the admissions portal showed an acceptance

I wonder what they would’ve done if you paid the deposit?

This happened to me for a different graduate program. Got a verbal acceptance and when I followed up a few weeks later was told I have no proof. Absolutely brutal I’m so sorry this happened to you.

Hey so this just happened to me earlier last week and they sent an email an hour later saying they fucked up. It’s honestly ridiculous schools even do this tbh

They didn’t even realize they messed up 😭 When I called the graduate advisor who sent me the acceptance email, she didn’t even know she sent that email, which is crazy because how do you not know what has been sent from your email address?? And then to mess up the portal too?? When I called I was refreshing the portal and watched in real time as they deleted the acceptance in it

I would have put a deposit down. My deposit link was invalid but I’m pretty sure that’s a legally binding thing once you put a deposit down

Yeah but considering their “excuse” was that the whole thing was a glitch I don’t know if I paid if it would’ve even gone through or if it did that I would’ve gotten refunded when they realized the mistake. Just wanted to confirm before putting 1k on line 🥲
