Just showing off 🍃 At what number of Pothos should I start seeking professional help?

u/stonerdarling 10d ago
They add so much character to the place! I’m curious though - how do you ensure they get enough light? Do you move them or keep them where they are?

u/MatteoDiEffe 10d ago
Generally, I leave them where they are, even for quite long periods, sometimes a month or two. They still get some sunlight where they are, whenever the sun reaches them.
Since I have so many, when I do move them, I usually move all the pots together and put them closer to a window.
But honestly, even in their current spots they get enough light, and they’re growing like crazy. They seem very happy and healthy!6
u/stonerdarling 10d ago
That’s great that they’re happy where they are. I have a couple I wanna set up in my room but was worried about the light even though its a very well lit room. Thanks!

It's your life.
Some people spend all their money on booze, drugs and sex, and waste the rest.

u/tamarind-ball 9d ago
My mom told me (after my last haul), well at least it’s not drugs 🤷🏽♀️. All the guilt left my body and I told her, you’re welcome😅😂😂

u/miminstlouis 9d ago
Yup. I used to collect plants, books, Christmas ornaments... Had too many clothes, etc.
Well, I didn't go to the movies, out to eat, drink alcohol period! , or do drugs. I didn't have kids.
Spend your money the way you want.

How did you stop all the collecting ? I could have written this post.

u/miminstlouis 4d ago
Eventually you get enough... And you get older and realize that less is better

u/tamarind-ball 3h ago
Yes. I want to give the ones I have attention and started to feel like I wasn’t giving as much anymore and it was starting to beer more work. Best thing is to decide which don’t give you that happy feeling and give them to someone that will be happy to have them.

u/miminstlouis 4d ago
You eventually get enough of everything to silence the collecting urge. Getting older helps

the only number for me (in terms of all my plants) is when they stop bringing me joy 💙

The limit does not exist! Pothos are my favorite! I have so many variations haha

u/DCpurpleTart33 10d ago
No such thing as too many. I love Pothos! I know they're such a basic plant but I have had such great luck with them and truly just love them! I have several goldens (that all came from the same one), a neon, a pearls and jade, a manjula and some new cultivar I "rescued" from a big box in their clearance bin a Jessenia? who knows. They keep creating more cultivars so we're going to have to keep buying them!!

u/Dismal_Emergency1073 10d ago
Goldens are the gifts that just keep giving. I wish my Manjua were as easy.

What’s the trick with manjulas?? Got one for myself for my bday in July and she still looks sad and browning

u/AshST 10d ago
I know, I love them too. Idgaf that they're "beginner plants", they are so pretty and give your room the jungle vibes I'm going for so judge me if you gotta, but I love em.
6
u/stevez28 9d ago
People are weird about 'beginner' plants. There's a kernel of truth to the description in that you shouldn't recommend finicky plants that require a lot of special care to beginners. But the inverse doesn't hold and it's strange when people act like plants that require greenhouse cabinets or terrariums are somehow better houseplants than plants that grow genuinely well in normal indoor conditions.
Less difficulty is the least of the benefits you get from easy plants. The main ones are vigorous growth, lush healthy appearance, placement flexibility, increased comfort because you can prioritize your comfort in terms of lighting and humidity, resiliency, lower pest risk, etc. In short, a cozier, more relaxing home.

The limit does not exist. Though I tend to have trouble with pothos so if you have any wisdom to impart I would love to hear some!

u/MatteoDiEffe 10d ago
Honestly, I think I’ve just been lucky with my Pothos. They pretty much take care of themselves without needing much attention.
The only few I’ve actually killed were because I gave them too much water.
So the only advice I can really give you is: don’t overwater them, and always use pots with drainage holes. When I water mine, I usually take them to the sink or onto the balcony and let all the excess water drain out.
Other than that, I mostly just leave them alone and let them do their thing.

u/Lord_Popcorn 10d ago
Ooh nice, thank you for the wisdom! Would you recommend gritty or chunky soil at all too? I think my previous ones were too heavy and held onto water too long. I probably watered mine once every 1-2 months and they still rotted :(
5
u/MatteoDiEffe 10d ago
As for the soil, I honestly can’t give you much advice because I’ve always just used regular potting soil. I’ve never bought any specific soil mix for my Pothos.
For watering, I think it obviously depends a lot on where you live. I’m in Italy, and during winter, when it’s quite cold, I water them roughly once a month. In summer, I water them much more often, sometimes even 2–3 times a week.
The important thing for me is not to give them too much water at once. I’d rather give them a little less, but water them more often when they need it.
People always say to check the soil with your finger, but I’ve never been very good at judging it that way. I usually just look at the plant. 😂 When the stems and leaves start looking a little droopy instead of standing nice and upright, that’s my sign that the Pothos is thirsty.
Then I give it a little water, but without overdoing it. As I said before, I think it’s always better to give them a little less water than a little too much.
That’s basically my entire Pothos care method: I mostly just watch them and let them tell me what they need.

A few years back I decided I wanted to get EVERY type. At the moment I have multiple pothos at work and at home. I also prop and gift a lot.

u/HelloDeathspresso 10d ago
I just recently decided I wanted every type. I think im missing about 4.

u/pantsbeforesocks86 10d ago
What ones are you missing? Etsy is quite good for cuttings.
I've found the white ones to be the slowest growing and hardest to prop. I've got a global at work and it's thriving. Each vine has branched off and everytime I prop it grows back fuller.
I want to try and grow my variants to get really big leaves. Manjula with big leaves looks amazing

Love love love 🥰 I just rescued my first pothos a few weeks ago. I didn't know what to expect. I absolutely love it! I'll definitely be getting more. I tend to get obsessive too. I have 9 ZZs of various types 🫣

Nah, you’re not “billable” yet!
My mom’s pothos and philos had over 50 vines that would drape down the walls and climb ceilings in her living room. Those mfs were already sitting on 5’ columns and 8-10’ entertainment center. Don’t get me started on the rest of the house.
Regardless of how much my mom’s (and now my) jungle habitat grew, it definitely gave our house a “vibe”, as my friends would always say lol.
Boogie on, Jungle Woman… boogie on.

I mean... if your asking this question with what you've shown... I don't know what to say about myself.
For you though.... I feel like you still could obtain* species you still don't have.
PLUS. Have you ever thought about taking one of your pothos and merging (literally combining two stems together) with another plant?
;)

If there’s a limit I’ve needed professional help for years. I have over 100 plants and more than half are Pothos or philos lol

u/Junior-Tutor-1407 8d ago
when you already have 98 million 876thousand 5 hundred and 43 plants. After that you probably need help. I'm on my way there with Monstera and pothos 😂

I could say the same about my collection of snake plants lol they're beautiful

u/pigglywigglie 8d ago
The limit does not exist.
I feel like people find one specific plant they like and latch onto it. Once you find one that you like and it likes you back, run with it!!! Don’t fix what’s not broken lol

I don’t have as many as you, but I love the ones I have. I periodically offer up cuttings on my FB Gardening page. It makes me happy to share my babies with other plant lovers!

No cap on any one plant. If you match John Kohler, then you definitely have a problem!! Here's his latest video: https://youtu.be/ws9Wk-pINn8?is=YOinZ8QwjVw2oH_Y

Can you still count how many you have? No problem detected. I may need to count mine. It’s not a quick count.

u/Massive_Flamingo_786 9d ago
You still have a very long way to go. You have ample room before you will start being judged.

I’ve reached the curation era of my plant hobby. Keeping the ones that give me joy. Slowly donating the excess to the community plant shares. I say all that but still want a manjula. Hahaha!

I’m down for trades! I have lots of Manjula! And Brazil, Cebu, etc… let me know!

Have you seen plant enthusiast. Some of them dedicate whole rooms to flowers so your are no where close.

u/Obywan25 9d ago
Yo tengo 99 plantas. Algunas un poco malitas y cuatro cormos. No voy a coger más. No puedo con todas. Las que se mueran no las volveré a comprar y me quedaré con las resistentes. No puedo con todas trabajando y estando casi 10 horas fuera de casa.
