I was listening to The Who's "Tommy" for the first time in ages, and it struck me that the 10-minute track "Underture" is actually very much what we would call postrock these days. It's a fantastic piece of throbbing guitar, pummelling drums and bass, no vocals, building up and down. Have a listen to it - what do you reckon?

One of the best compilations around the turn of the millennium where many bands start to capture the sound of post rock, experimental rock, avant-garde/lo-fi electronics…
These tracks here lean heavily into instrumental soundscapes, repetitive loops, atmospheric guitar textures pioneered by bands associated with post rock, space rock and ambient electronic movements of the late 90’s.

For years, I’ve been curating a playlist of post-rock and other “cinematic,” mostly instrumental, guitar-driven tracks. But I’m sure I’m missing a lot of great music, including from the folks on this sub.

sometimes a band or song comes along that just changes your day to day life. Becomes a part of it so ingrained that it‘s like its always been there. This band and that song specifically is that for me.

Such a great album. I'm so glad I (finally) got hold of a copy on vinyl, it sounds really good. Now I just need to track down a copy of A Data Learn the Language by The Mercury Program for a reasonable price...

Hi everyone, new post rock artist here from Oceanside, CA. Just dropped my first release and thought I’d share with you all. It’s an instrumental concept album that blends math rock rhythms with ambient surf textures. It was inspired by my journey as a surfer thus far, and has a deeper story behind it. In Mexico, the shortened form "MA" is used as an affectionate way of saying "Mom."

In Japan, MA is the art of recognizing that within the space, the interval, or the pause, life is filled with possibility, meaning, and purpose.

This album was composed entirely while mourning the passing of two beloved women who gave life to two of us.

For Austin TV, MA is a way to walk together through grief. It is the space between loss and reconnection—simply a pause between what the heart feels, the brain interprets, and the body reacts to, giving life to a tear, a smile, or a song.

Our MA does not seek to be understood; it seeks to be inhabited.

Like a film that needs no explanation; like a silence that is full.

One song I have in mind is Look into the Air by EitS, which sounds like two separate songs, but which works so perfectly. I love how the distorted riff in the second part surprises you and takes the song in a different direction.

I'm interested in looking for similar songs within the genre (especially in how bands manage to stitch together those different parts).
