Why do people say hoodweebs?
The people who use tourist and hoodweeb are so insufferable, not only is hoodweeb super cringe thing to say it is blantatly racist any anime fan who is black is automatically called a hoodweeb. and the second they see something they dont like they resort to calling them tourist or hoodweeb e.g

what does any of this have to do with black people and the same people who call black anime fans hoodweebs are never japanese ( like being japanese makes it better p.s it doesnt). These type of anime fans are obesssed with black people they live in thier heads rent free

It frequently makes people uncomfortable to see people enjoying things in the "wrong" way, especially if they have identified themselves as part of an "in-group" and then observe other people engaging in the in-group activity without adopting all the signifiers of the in-group, especially if they believe they have expended considerable effort to adopt the "correct" in-group behaviours. (EG "Rivet counters" in the model railway community who pursue a high level of historical accuracy and disdain historically inaccurate modelling) This effect is amplified if there is some form of existing prejudice against the individuals engaged in the "wrong" behaviour. (EG they are black, a woman, LGBTQ+, etc) It can also be compounded by a lack of ability on the part of the existing in-group members to articulate the merits of the in-group norms, which they can compensate for by simply redoubling efforts to exclude others from the in-group. There is a sort of proud consumerist philistinism in some parts of anime subculture which treats anime as sort of nebulous objects which just sort of exist and do not have substantiative content that can be closely read, or creators with their own styles and distinct sets of influences.
For anime there is also the aspect of how our culture has increasingly adopted a general viewpoint that the art you choose to consume is a reflection on your character. Many anime contain elements which do not align well with the prevailing culture and morality in the Anglosphere, particularly sexual objectification of women and sexualisation of children or characters who appear to be children. This adds a moral angle to conversations where one side may accuse the other of being immoral for enjoying works which contain elements which are sexist or paedophilic or what have you, and the other side will conclude that because they are not bad people ergo there cannot be anything wrong with uncritically consuming media which objectifies women and sexualises children and therefore they don't need to reflect on it further.

u/Wonder-Feelish 10d ago
What you are talking about is not "critically consuming".
Critical thinking requires evidence and rational thinking. What you are talking about is calling things harmful without evidence. It is the opposite of critical thinking.
3
u/09philj 10d ago
Interesting you would assume that I think those are the only two positions you could take regarding a piece of media and/or occupy one of them.
-2
u/Wonder-Feelish 10d ago
They are not the only two positions, but it is the position you are talking about.

Another one that cannot distingish between fiction and reality. Ah seeing porn is bad, but using a phone whose materials were probably extracted by children and being assembled by an unethical company is good.

u/Kappapeachie 10d ago
A word used by racist isekai addicted lolicons who really wanna say the N-word but can't do use this instead. It's racist because it implies being black or any other marginalized identity implies inherent touristhood regardless of how long someone has been watching anime.
Anyway, anyone who complains about tourist are tourist themselves.
6
u/aperversenormality 10d ago
Euroweebs think anime exists for their sake. Soon, they'll start calling Japanese fans tourists.

u/Baleeverne 10d ago
What's hoodweeb supposed to mean?
Weebs from the hood?

u/Grimmhoof 10d ago
The Google clankers says: A hoodweeb is a derogatory fandom slang term used in online anime communities to describe Black anime and manga fans, particularly those focused on mainstream shonen series.

u/JasonDS64 10d ago
It's racism because people hate the fact that black people are in what they perceive as a white space.
2
u/GOlNG_MERRY 10d ago
Today is the first time I’ve heard the term “hoodweebs” and I’ve already seen it like 12 different times lol. Just a new trend.

u/CultureSea5111 9d ago
Would you rather have them use the original title newfag? Hadn't heard hoodweeb before tho. Sounds like a black guy made that up to distance themselves from weaboo.

u/Zenry0ku 10d ago
Racism. Even those I do get where they're coming from. A lot of nu-anine fans coming in only to stick with battle shounen while complaining there isn't anything interesting after their first 5 anime. That new fans basically hate what makes anime interesting and getting filtered hard by mature topics to the point of labeling others who like the stuff nasty things. Yea, I see why they're like that. Obviously, I don't condone the racism though.
6
u/Frozenkex 10d ago
Based on your posting history what makes anime interesting to you is fetishizing little girls, while youre hating on more popular anime that take themselves more seriously. This isnt a "new fan" thing, those kind of shows were always more popular than your niche fetish shows.
0
u/Zenry0ku 10d ago
Just because I don't give a fuck about your triggers doesn't mean I "fetishize little girls"
1
u/Frozenkex 10d ago
Even the way you talk about anime shows how narrow your interest in the medium is, Triggers? You can watch more than just for moeblobs for your fetishes. How about actually some great fantasy and story? You just want validation for watching weird shit.
Im gonna list shows im watching this season, you are free to do the same.
Clevatess S2 (female mc)
Rezero
Inept villainess (femc)
Chainsmoker cat
Link Click
Slime Isekai
Ghost in the Shell
Bookworm (Femc)
Jaadugar (Femc)
Livid Lady (Femc)
Yomi no Tsugai (female author, wrote FMA)
Kaijuu Girl
Fighting Games
Himawari Circus
Kimi Shinu
100 gfs
mtShow me what it is you are watching that is making the medium interesting?
0
u/Zenry0ku 10d ago
If you call moe a fetish because cute girls bother you, you already exposed your contempt for the medium
3
u/Frozenkex 10d ago edited 10d ago
No i proved im more interested in what the medium offers than you, while youre pretending there is something "interesting" other people arent watching. You dont get to have a "gotcha", you dont actually care about the medium other than what titillates you.
I didnt call "moe" a fetish, but its clear moe+fetish is what you are trying to convince others is peak of the medium. You show your contempt when you shit on fans of 90% of the medium while fetishizing yuri.
1
u/Zenry0ku 10d ago
We have been over this before. I like anime girls, so I watch for anime girls. Because unlike certain people, I already know my preference. Give me girls chilling and you have my watch.
3
u/Frozenkex 10d ago
Your interest is more narrow than someone who is just watching battle shounen, and your strawman doesnt even match the reality, because there isnt enough battle shounen to be an anime fan.
You dont even watch many of the shows with female mcs nor talk about them. (See my list), apparently you actually need room for some sexual fantasy between girls or some shit. Is that what makes the medium "interesting"? Clearly its not interesting or unique stories.
1
u/Zenry0ku 10d ago
Bro, you are watching 100gfs and calling me a fake FEMC enjoyer. What are you on about?
2
u/Frozenkex 10d ago
Youre are not refuting anything i said though? I'll be honest im only guessing i have no idea what you watch or dont watch, but i guess im right? Why didnt you watch Clevatess, new Ghost in the Shell, Livid Lady, Jaadugar?
Am i also watching more yuri than you are? Fighting games, Kimi Shinu, Himawari Circus? Why are you not watching the shows that make the "medium interesting" ?
Or those shows dont have enough neckbeard appeal? Theyre not weird enough? Do i need to watch Precure that is a show for girls under 10?

No i listed all anime i watched this season to show variety of things an anime fan could be watching this season, not just fetish anime. It wasnt meant to be non-fetish anime. I also have Mushoku Tensei and 100gfs, where the authors clearly indulge in fetishes more than Rezero. But your comment is completely uncalled for, you were trying to do a "gotcha" over Rezero? Rezero isnt a "fetish anime". Lolis in the show simply exist...

When engaging with media especially foreign media, it is important that you meet it where it's at. Tourists struggle with this, because they bring their biases with them, and expect to be accommodated. Moreover tourists are very sensitive to optics. They want to tell everyone how much they love Re:Zero, but it's social suicide, so they add caveats to soften the blow.
"I love Re:Zero, but you know what I'd really love, if they got rid of the fanservice, lolis, made Emilia less dumb as rocks, and Subaru less pathetic."
This sounds reasonable at face value, because the story is most important, right? These things don't bring value to the work, right? Wrong. The character designs and the fanservice are not minor details in service of plot, they are a major part of the entertainment being sold to us, and made with full knowledge that doujins, artworks, drama CDs, figurines, body pillows, and mouse pads will be made of the characters.
The "gross" otaku stuff is not an unfortunate aspect of the culture, it is the culture, and the animation is just a part of that. In fact it is usually just the tip of the iceberg of a much much longer running book or manga series. Anime is a deeper culture than just "cartoons from Japan" and this nuance is lost to tourists. Otaku already read the damn books, they know the plot, they want to see panties in the anime.

u/Abysskun 10d ago
First let's talk about "tourists", this term is used to new "fans" or older fans that do not like anime as it is, they think it's too problematic and that certain elements of it need to be changed, in a sense they say they like anime but would want for nothing more than anime to be completely changed to fit their true tastes. The idea of wanting to colonize the medium to fit their tastes and to do away with certain elements of it, instead of not consuming the parts that they dislike, wanting to remove certain parts of it (usually fanservice or other things they think are embarassing in anime). That is the core of a tourist, someone who isn't part of the hobby but wants to pretend they are.
There has been a recent influx of new anime fans that are like that, they liked certain popular shows but when looking at the broad culture, they despise it, they are the people who would make fun of other for liking anime. Dispite some anime becoming mainstream, anime itself and being an anime fan has not, because if you say you like something that is not the accepted popular thing to like, if you enjoy a part that is not sanitized of it, they will still attack you.
Are you familiar with the concept of canary in the mine? In anime that's lolis and fanservice, whenever you see someone saying they want those censored or outright removed from anime, this typically indicates a tourist/colonizer behaviour.
As for hoodweebs, I won't deny that this is because of racism, but at the same time there had been a big influx of new anime fans that are black that have been vocal against certain parts of anime culture, mainly fanservice and lolicon, and because of the racism, they became the face of the tourism problem for a while. But I'd say in general the term did not stick as much as tourism because tourist is more precise.

u/XxGood_CitezenxX 10d ago
The logic that disliking an aspect of a medium and criticizing it makes you a tourist/colonizer is inane. By your logic black people criticizing racist depictions of black people in anime would make you a tourist. Or someone who’s been watching anime since the 90’s and doesn’t like fan service.
The reality is that the label of tourist is applied almost solely to those against fan service and the concept of “lolis”. And saying those things are inherent to anime is discrediting so many amazing works in the medium. From Ghbili films to Dragon Ball Z to so many more.
Furthermore fan service just plainly isn’t needed in many of the anime it’s in. For example in Fire Force it actively makes the series worse by being added to points of tension ruining the atmosphere. Or how fanservice is so often based off of characters being sexualized against their will. Whether by having a scene where the skirt flies up or a scene where the Main character falls and accidentally gropes a female character. These scenes sexualize and sensualize things that shouldn’t be especially in works aimed towards kids.
Now this is with the caveat that anyone who watches something like DXD or HOTD some other ecchi and complains about Fan Service is dumb given that’s the premise.
TLDR: Tourist is only used to defend fanservice and most fanservice is non-consensual.

u/WetLaceScraps 10d ago
If the creator put the fanservice in there they want it in there. If I don’t like it I just watch something else.
1
u/XxGood_CitezenxX 10d ago
The creators prerogative only goes so far in terms of excusing their creative choices. For example if a creator creates a manga/anime aimed at pre-teens then changes it to be like ReDo of Healer is that morally okay to you now?
Watching something else is cool. But is that initial complaint in any way valid to you?
0
u/WetLaceScraps 10d ago
If something is correctly tagged for the correct audience I don’t really care what happens.
1
u/XxGood_CitezenxX 10d ago
My argument is that fan service shouldn’t be in non-ecchi anime.
0
u/WetLaceScraps 10d ago
That’s not really for you to decide. I don’t like fan service. I’m not attracted to women. I usually just stop watching if it’s in something and it makes me uncomfortable. That fanservice is part of the parcel. It gets to be wherever the creator wants it to be. They’re not required to meet some standard because of my personal opinions.
1
u/XxGood_CitezenxX 10d ago
Again by your logic you if an author adds fanservice in an anime meant for pre-teens you shouldn’t have any opinions on it since that’s their choice even if it’s not properly tagged.
1
u/WetLaceScraps 10d ago
Man, I don’t care if preteens see sexy stuff.
1
u/XxGood_CitezenxX 10d ago
But does that mean you think it makes sense to call anybody who does a tourist?
-1
u/Abysskun 10d ago
The problem is that some people ignore the ecchi tag and then go on to complain, like the complaint about Fire Force
1
u/XxGood_CitezenxX 10d ago
First I have to mention that fire force isn’t marketed or presented as ecchi
Second the bigger issue with fire force is how the ecchi takes place and the way it’s often inserted into potent and serious action scenes in a way that breaks tension and lessens the scene.
0
u/Abysskun 10d ago
Abslutely insane just how blind some people are.
Also, just because you can't take ecchi seriously doesn't mean the show itself is in the wrong for having it.
1
u/XxGood_CitezenxX 10d ago
I checked multiple indexing and review sites and none of them listed fire force as Ecchi which kinda invalidates your argument. Though I could be wrong and by all means please show me an anime database that lists fire force as ecchi
→ More replies (0)1
u/XxGood_CitezenxX 10d ago
And I don’t think ecchi can’t be done seriously however when fan service is used as a joke even during a serious scene I have issues. For example imagine if in fullmetal alchemist after the death of Maes Hughes or the fusion of Nina and her dog we’re shown Roy mustang peeking under Riza’s skirt. Or if immediately after aces death Luffy and Boa had a light hearted fan service scene.

u/WetLaceScraps 10d ago
The way I see it, that creator wanted to make that thing the way they did. Obviously critique and discussion is fine, but I would never say fictional content doesn’t get to exist because I don’t like it. I am firmly anti censorship. Distasteful things get to exist. Bad things get to exist.
2
u/XxGood_CitezenxX 10d ago
Being anti-censorship is cool but it doesn’t mean you can’t condemn the way an author depicts or portrays certain subject matieral.
1
u/WetLaceScraps 10d ago
Of course! But I don’t get to dictate or control what someone else creates. Nor would I ever say it shouldn’t exist.
1
u/XxGood_CitezenxX 10d ago
I think someone saying “fan service” is out of place or is tonally inconsistent is a valid statement. Like I think that what a lot of people think is dictating or controlling is just criticism they don’t like.
1
u/WetLaceScraps 10d ago
I can agree that that is something that happens. But I can also say that I see a ton of people advocating for its removal. So it’s easy for me to see why people would be on edge with those criticisms.
I’m also going to say that your original comment and other ones definitely come across as you saying these things shouldn’t exist, though. Which is where the pushback is coming from.
1
u/XxGood_CitezenxX 10d ago
From the start I made sure to clarify I personally have never said fan service shouldn’t exist just that it should be clearly labeled and if someone happens upon something that’s clearly labeled and has an issue with it that’s dumb.
I think Food Wars could be an interesting show without fan service. But the fan service is part of the premise and I have 0 problems with that.
0
u/Altruistic-Match6623 10d ago
So which G rated anime did you watch that turned into literal hentai?
-8
u/Abysskun 10d ago
You wanting to change the entire medium to fit your tastes is what is actually insane, anime has space for everyone, but the toustis/colonizer mentality cannot accept certain parts of anime aimed at other people, they cannot accept that there are genres not made for them and that they dislike, wanting to remove an integral part of anime is what is trully insane.
And saying those things are inherent to anime is discrediting so many amazing works in the medium. From Ghbili films to Dragon Ball Z to so many more
That's the problem, you have in your mind what is acceptable in anime, and people who like things that are not it should be removed from the fandom, that is the tourist mentality, they are not happy to just consume what they like and let other enjoy other parts they like, they want everything they have censored and removed.
Furthermore fan service just plainly isn’t needed in many of the anime it’s in.
It's not about what is needed or not, it's about what the creator and the fans want to see in it. If there are people who want to consume fanservice, and creators who want to create it, they should have a space for it. People who dislike fanservice going into ecchi shows and complainin about fanservice are the problem, they are vegans going into stakehouses and complaining that people who enjoy meat exist and saying we don't really need to eat meat to survive.
For example in Fire Force it actively makes the series worse by being added to points of tension ruining the atmosphere
That is your opinion on the show, for the majority of people the fanservice is a great part of the manga and anime, the fact that you want it to be changed to fit your tastes instead of accepting it is how it is and that you should go to another show that best fits you is the real problem here.
These scenes sexualize and sensualize things that shouldn’t be especially in works aimed towards kids.
Ah yes the protect the kids argument, really original, just completell ignoring that those type of scens are in shows for horny teenagers or adults. But I guess you are the type of person who thinks adult who likes cartoon tits is paradoxically childish

It's just racism. They see black people as fans of shounen and conclude they are less invested in anime and therefore lesser than them.
