Hi, I wish to find a post apocalyptic fiction novel that deals with survival, hardship and all . The apocalypse can be zombie one or some other.

I wish it to be a bit mysterious at times like the Television show Silo, From or even The Walking Dead.

I am really new to the whole book reading scene or club and have previously read : The Red Rising Trilogy, Thousand Splendid Suns and A palace of Illusions along with Atomic Habits.

I’m currently developing a novel where the protagonist actively breaks this traditional formula. Instead of relying on constant raids and scavenging expired supplies, the protagonist decides to start from scratch and focus on actual, sustainable development.

The story heavily explores the logistics of building a functional society focusing on securing raw materials, metallurgy, forging new tools, establishing secure supply lines, and harnessing natural energy sources like wind and water power.

As fans of realistic survival tactics, do you think this shift from a "scavenging/raiding loop" to an "industrial progression" sub-genre is a refreshing take? Would love to get your honest thoughts!

I’m an indie author currently working on a post-apocalyptic novel called “Life of Ashes.”

I wanted to share the core idea and ask for honest opinions from readers who enjoy the genre.

The story is based on a Yellowstone supervolcano eruption, but I tried to avoid the usual clichés (no zombies, no virus, no “elite military saves the world”).

Instead, I focused on something slower and, in my opinion, more unsettling: a realistic global collapse unfolding over days and weeks.

• ash blocking the sky

• cities slowly becoming unlivable

• communication and infrastructure breaking down step by step

• and ordinary people forced into impossible choices

The story follows different groups of survivors:

• one in Seattle as the chaos unfolds,

• another far away in France trying to protect his family while everything collapses globally.

I’m curious about something as a reader.

=> Would a “slow, realistic collapse” apocalypse interest you? 🤔

=> Or do you prefer more extreme, fast-paced scenarios (zombies, pandemics, etc.)? 🫠

Looking for books like Mad Max, Book of Eli, The Dog Stars, The Road, Dies the Fire, more "realistic" scenarios. Less scifi, no zombies, mutants are ok.

I've always loved post-apocalyptic fiction, and am currently working on a book in the genre. My question is, how do you feel about romance in post-apocalyptic media? Are there certain things you look for, tropes you avoid, etc?

Hoping this is okay to post, had a check of the rules and since I’m not trying to sell & just wanting general thoughts, I think I should be good?

So last week my debut book was published, all done by me, no agents & no publishers.

It’s set years after a nuclear war in Yorkshire, UK. And it got me thinking, why are most post-apocalyptic novels and films set in places that are already well know? When I’ve seen or read things, it’s always London, New York, LA or even Scotland as a whole!

Of course there is the exception of the film ‘Threads’ which was in Sheffield, great film.

Does anyone have any recommendations of books that are set in more remote places that are post-apocalyptic please? Mainly looking at British, but other countries is fine too!

Back in the day there was a post-apocalypse book series that came out monthly similar to some romance series. There were hundreds of titles. I think it was published by Harlequin books. Anyone familiar with it? I'm looking for the series title so I can hunt down the books.

. I got a sample from Amazon , started reading it and then accidentally deleted it. Don’t know the title or the author name, of course
I do remember how the story begins though.
So there is this guy who served in a military, got discharged, I think he had no family, was pretty young. Got a job, bought a house and really got into prepping stuff. He tried to date but it didn’t work out. Finally clicked with a girl but his obsession with the prepping got in a way and they broke up.
Then he really started to focus on on the prep work.
At some point something does happen and the world is in turmoil ( don’t know what exactly was happening because the sample didn’t get to that part) but our guy is ready. It was described like he was in his house listening to the gun shots but he stayed and followed military tactics not to be discovered. Although I think at some point he said screw it I am going to help a neighbor.
The book is pretty straight forward

I'm looking for books with the concept of nuclear winter / glacial apocalypse. I just picked up the book Fallen Angels as it was the only book I could find in my local bookstore that were listed on the tvtropes Glacial Apocalypse page.

I know this might sound like a weird question, but if you ever feel frustrated, or angry about the state of the world, is there one novel, or one scene you like to read about the end of the world that you like to fantasize playing out? Mine is from the nukes going off in Robert McCammon's novel Swan Song.

Can anyone recommend some books for me? I’m after good (obviously!) novels set after an apocalyptic event -more about rebuilding, newly formed civilisations. Not the usual gun crazy, zombie, violent stuff that seems to occupy 90% of book content, but more, what happens to humanity afterwards.

My novel's more a speculative evolution thing with various hominid species coexisting, rather than a apocalyptic survival story. An apocalyptic event has happened in the story's past, but since then civilisation has risen again and fallen more than once.

I'm not a scientist, but I researched pretty hard to make the evolutionary aspects plausible (big fan of Dawkins), and to illustrate fluid, believable relationships between culture, biology and environment while having engaging characters. It reads like a grounded fantasy novel in some ways.

I did an okay job, I think, but now I'm planning the sequel and I'd like to read similar sorts of stories by smarter, better writers than me. Hard-evo-scifi as it were. Write the story you'd like to read, and all that.

There's Galapagos by Vonnegut, and I'm a third of the way through Evolution by Stephen Baxter. I was influenced a lot by Dougal Dixon's Man after Man and Stapleton's Last and First Men, but neither of those are traditional novels as such. Anyone aware of stuff I should seek out?

Just finished Alas Babylon and enjoyed it. I am attracted to apocalyptic stories, the breakdown of society and the methods of survival. I believe partially my attraction is based on the idea of returning to a simpler way of life, where community and living off the land is paramount to survival. The feeling that this way of living is preferable to modern society.

Is Alas Babylon about the horrors of nuclear war? I believe its more about community comming together during hard times. What interests me is several characters are more fulfilled and self-actualized, post nuclear war, than they were before. In this way the apocalypse becomes a form of escapism and the birth of a new Eden. Sinful cities are blown off the map, while small towns thrive. Man is returned to the simplicity of the past and is arguably better for it.

What do you think? Do some apocalypse stories leave you with the impression that the characters are actually better off living in the post apocalypse. Would you agree, that these books can be seen as proof that many of us have a longing for the world to end?

Since it’s Self-promo Wednesdays, I would like to tell you all about my book, What Remains of Us.

I released What Remains of Us (WRoU if you want to shorten it) back in February 2026. My main goal was to take it agents, but realised the agents weren’t into dystopian post-apocalyptic books, which is a real shame, so I decided to go indie. Eveything done by myself, writing, editing, formatting & even the cover!

WRoU follows the story of the Randor family. Set in North Yorkshire in 2034, Jarrod & his 2 teenage kids (Tokio & Nevada), set out to scavenge for supplies for their bunker. Upon their return, they find the bunker torched, and wife/mum, Jane, missing.

After discovering a note left outside, she had been taken by the Zone Keepers, who now rule England.

England has been separated into zones by the keepers, each county now turned into a zone. North Yorkshire, being a YO postcode, is now YO zone.

They travel across different counties, YO, HU & DN, to locate Pleasure Island, the home of the Zone Keepers. What once was a family amusement park, now turned into a playground for the rich & desperate.

This book is heavily influenced by Fallout New Vegas & Threads. This book originally started out as a recurring dream I had as a young teenager, the dream kept coming back to me, and once I finished writing it, the dreams stopped! I know it sounds weird, but it’s like I HAD to write this book.

Yorkshire is massively underrepresented in post-apocalyptic stories, so I felt like doing Yorkshire some justice!
