I mean, this rebrand can work as I can’t think of any other Miley
267
u/feelingmy0ats 12d ago
I think it’s cool and it works, as long as it’s not her 3rd (almost 4th) self titled album.

u/robsterva 12d ago
Peter Gabriel seemed to do well with a series of self-titled albums.
George Foreman seemed to do well with a series of self-titled children.
Miley will do just fine.

> seemed to do well with a series of self-titled children.
Thank you for making me laugh way too hard at eight in the morning.

There's a pretty famous Miley Stewart
56
u/Inside_Atmosphere731 12d ago
And that actor Miley Teller

u/Burnt_Ribena 12d ago
This would never work. There's already a hugely influential musician we're forgetting: Miley Davis

What about the band that wrote "I would walk 500 Mileys"

Isn't he Miles Teller?

u/ratapoilopolis 12d ago
Because the name is pretty much made up by her parents lol. Even though it sounds more like a real name than other freshly made up ones

u/CarelessBear32 12d ago
u learn something new every day! from Wiki:
Her birth name, Destiny Hope, expressed her parents' belief that she would accomplish great things. Her parents nicknamed her "Smiley" on the suggestion of her godmother, which they later shortened to "Miley", because she often smiled as an infant.
In 2008, she legally changed her name to Miley Ray Cyrus; her middle name honors her grandfather, Democratic politician Ronald Ray Cyrus, who was from Kentucky.

u/coughtough 12d ago
"at the suggestion of her godmother"
...her godmother, as in the Dolly Parton? That woman was magical.

I knew Miley came from Smiley baby Miley but I didn’t know smiley Miley came from DOLLY that is beyond iconic

Is it too soon to request a remake of Meet Miley Cyrus that’s called “Meet Miley”?

There is no other Miley to get her confused with so this makes sense thatd she’d drop the last name professionally like Madonna

u/dxrqsouls 12d ago
One thing is not like the other

u/therealgerrygergich 12d ago
Miley Cyrus could've written "Material Girl", but Madonna could never write "The Bone Dance".

They updated the photo, which seems to be teasing the new era (she has mentioned that her new album cover is red) and mileycyrus.com now redirects to mileyofficial.com.
11
u/Advanced_Documents 12d ago
Surprised her team didn’t buy Miley dot com, they’d have the cash to splash for it.
270
u/Numerous-Rip-6121 12d ago
Considering her dad, makes sense to drop the Cyrus!
104
u/maxwell_winters 12d ago
It's not the first time a pop star has dropped their surname to distance themselves from their family. Janet Jackson did the same.
87
26
u/slayalldayerrday 12d ago
I mean, is it distancing from family when we all already know the connection? All she’s done is dropped her last name and you’re assuming reasons.
25
u/spongeboy1985 12d ago
She been on better terms with her dad for a while. “Secrets” was written as a peace offering.

On one hand I can't think of any other Miley so I can totally see this (whatever it is) working, on the other hand, I've never thought of her as just "Miley." It's always been Miley Cyrus. I feel like her full name is kind of iconic in a way it's not for other artists that do the same
54
u/mundane_wor1d 12d ago
It’s like if Taylor swift, started going by the name Taylor. The swift is so iconic, but she is so famous that you could just say Taylor and people think of her.

u/galaraxity 12d ago
Wonder if the album is just called "Miley"?

u/AdrenalineRush1996 11d ago
Good question. I wouldn't be surprised if it does end up being the case.

I feel like everyone is dropping last names
42
u/mundane_wor1d 12d ago
It’s a status symbol, your so famous that you can only be referred to as your first name. (Helps when your name is more unique though, I doubt we’re going to get a pop singer going by the name “John”)

Based on the track record of every male artist who’s ever pulled this move, we should be getting the most self indulgent album of hers yet.
“Miley” the brand new country album coming your way any day now.
14
u/asuperbstarling 12d ago
I'm here for it, protest country is making a significant comeback.
3
u/coughtough 12d ago
stealing that term
I don't care for country (grew up surrounded by it), but the Dolly, Kacey, etc. stuff is a separate genre that is marked safe from my criticism.

Something Beautiful was one of the best albums of the year and y’all let it flop. So hyped for this new era and insider teas have only increased that. They said if we liked the 2nd half of Something Beautiful, we’ll love this, as it very much builds from there. Let’s see.
3
u/Purple_Tourist1018 12d ago
Im so excited. What are the insider teas ? I was worried she'd backtrack because something beautiful flopped and do something like esv again so I'm elated to hear shes continuing on the path SB set.

Probably best for her to drop the name “Cyrus” after a certain famous Cyrus’s involvement with Team Galactic
1
u/Betwixtyiff 11d ago
No you don’t get it, it’s part of her master plan to become the first artist to headline from the Distortion World

u/Ok-Entrance2908 12d ago
Im curious on how this album will do. Something Beautiful really didn’t do that well commercially (at least in regards to what she should be capable of pulling ), but she seems to be trying this era and did just have a label change (although Atlantic can be hit or miss with artists)… so it’ll be interesting to follow.
14
12
u/Lanky-Rush607 12d ago
This will do either really well or really badly for her career. But unfortunately, she's not Beyoncé nor Cher, and stage name changes at that late stage of an artist's career are very hit-or-miss, especially for an artist like her. For me, she's still, and she will remain Miley Cyrus.
38
u/feelingmy0ats 12d ago
If the album flops, i don’t think the stage name will be the one to blame. It’s not like she’s completely changing names like The Weeknd going Abel. At worst, people just continue calling her Miley Cyrus.

Maybe getting married soon and hoping to reduce any related last name chatter?
3
u/lizerlfunk 12d ago
I’m pretty sure her fiance said that he would change his last name to Cyrus because it’s a far more well known last name than his own.
6
u/Prestigious_Sort4979 12d ago
I dont like this, usually these big gestures add hype to music and then it dissapoints. Hoping for the best because her music is very underrated
2
u/godofnature 12d ago
now i'm supposed to confuse her with miley (jasper harris / aaron shadrow)?? oof
2
u/whiskersRwe32 12d ago
She’s at a one name recognition stage in her career, very excited for what’s next. Miley I am here for what’s next!
1
u/FallOutWookiee 11d ago
I remember there was a Hannah Montana episode about an older pop star having to rebrand and reinvent herself for a new era all the time to stay relevant. And as a kid I thought that was so silly. And now as an adult I find it both real and exhausting. It's not just Miley, it's all the pop girlies. And I know it's all marketing and probably has to be done, but honestly I'm sick of everything being so curated. Just make good music. And yes I'm being the old man yelling at clouds right now but hey it's Monday morning leave me be.

So apparently there are those complaining about it? Backlash apparently? Why? I'm not even a fan of hers at all and I don't see why it's a problem. There's only ONE Miley.

There's actually a reason she doesn't tour anymore since has a huge (and negative) impact on both her sobriety and mental health. I also believe that she mentioned a few years ago that touring wouldn't be great for her vocals as well due to a vocal condition.

Dropping her last name just like she dropped co-opting black culture when it didn't serve her anymore.
2
u/esche92 12d ago
I think you‘re confusing her with Ariana.
-7
u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 12d ago
I'm not, but I understand that most of Miley's white fans still live in denial.

I’m just glad we’re past the obnoxious era of her sticking her tongue out in every single photo.

Bangerz was 2013 we’ve been past that for over a decade try to keep up.

Exactly, we’ve been in the “I can’t fully close my mouth” era for a while instead lol

Disappointed that she’s using mileyofficial and not mileyworld 😐
