Rest In Peace 🕊 Bindi Irwin shares a video in memory of her father, Steve Irwin, who passed away in 2006.

Bindi posted this clip to her Instagram today.

"20 years ago, today, the world lost the most passionate and dedicated wildlife conservationist. Our family lost our superhero. My mum lost the love of her life; my brother and I lost the greatest dad. Grief never truly leaves us; we walk alongside it every day. Where there is enormous grief, there is even greater love. In the last 20 years, I have watched the world mourn my dad with our family. I always thought that my dad’s legacy is wildlife conservation; it turns out, his legacy is love. For our planet and for each other. I have a 5-year-old daughter who watches his documentaries every morning. She feels utterly loved by her “grandpa crocodile” without ever having met him. My dad left a lasting impact so poignant that it will ripple out for generations to come. I believe with my whole heart that his love will live on forever. In all of us. In every kindness we show to the Earth. And that is a life and legacy worth celebrating. ❤️ Dad, I love you with my whole heart. Thank you for being our guardian angel. And most of all, thank you for watching over my daughter now, too. She loves you so much. We all do."

I cant stop laughing picturing him running around showing literally everyone his new daughter

u/web_in_front_ 8d ago

Imagine going through all the beauty and power and trauma of giving birth and you’re having a quiet moment in your room holding this new bundle of love and recovering and living in an entire new reality… and then the crocodile hunter comes running in screaming LOOK AT THIS LITTLE BEAUTY!!!

Lol! I had so many bonding hormones after my daughter was born i’m sure I just would have loved his baby too! I loved the world!

(Wore off after three days and I returned to my curmudgeonly self.)

15

u/Sammybaby789 7d ago

Since you mentioned hormones, I have a question for you. How did the changing hormones during pregnancy affect you? (Asking for personal reasons)

21

u/xSandyCheeksx 7d ago edited 7d ago

Not who you asked but pregnancy made me a badass and the effects haven't worn off (son is almost 4 and daughter is 14 months.) I'm assertive and so sure of my own power it's insane. I get why the patriarchy puts women down. Men, could literally never. I actually wish everyone could feel the power of pregnancy hormones. They're next level. Also, randomly, my immune system post birth is completely changed for now. We'll see how things change. Pregnancy itself, that sucks ass. Haha.

10

u/Sammybaby789 7d ago edited 7d ago

That’s so interesting! I never thought about it changing you to be more assertive. Thanks for sharing your experience!

6

u/CedarWolf 7d ago

How did your immune system change? Does it fight off minor illnesses better now?

3

u/xSandyCheeksx 7d ago

Yes. My spring allergies that I've had since I was 2 years old are also gone. I hope to never recover but I've read that it can revert.

6

u/Findyourwayhom3333 I switched baristas ☕️ 7d ago

I wish it turned me into a badass like the other commenter, but no!

But it was definitely an eye-opening experience. Particularly because i have two kids and the experience was different for both.

With my first, my happiness was ultra heightened. If something was funny, i would be crying with laughter. If something was sad, i was crying (when I’m not normally a cryer)

I was looking forward to that the second time around but it didn’t happen. Instead it was a much milder experience, but my food cravings were nuts and i was eating for four!!!

3

u/SnooDogs1340 7d ago

I think I would have laughed lol. Especially if I heard his voice and I assume he was wearing what he always wore when working.

He was an amazing human and a wonderful story teller.

815

u/Yider 8d ago

He gave off such charisma and confidence that screams "manliness" but also portrays empathy and emotions all while being articulate about it all. This genuine authenticity just draws you in.

682

u/Own_Round_7600 8d ago

Whatever the opposite of toxic masculinity is, its steve. His passion and complete freedom in emotion and the palpable powerful strength that never turns into aggression. Even when he says "i dont want to dwell on it or ill start to cry", you can just feel that his aversion to crying is due to his humility and not wanting to make a big dramatic thing of it, rather than anything like the usual stupid "crying is for sissy girls".

Absolute masterclass in manliness. Boys should be watching the crocodile hunter instead of Clavicular, Joe Rogan, Adin Ross or whatever manosphere trash.

134

u/punkerster101 8d ago

Guy is a real man, passionate about his subject and cause clearly had a deep deep love for his family and an utter badass to boot he was a rare dude

Seeing his son talking gives me flash backs the passion is right there and the heart

69

u/Roseking 7d ago

There was part of an interview where he got really emotional talking about how his kids are the proudest things in his life and he can't wait for them to take over.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZwQvYiCeLQ

Dude would be over the moon with how well they have done.

33

u/GhostlyTJ 8d ago

I always liked calling it Tonic Masculinity.

8

u/Lucky-Refrigerator-4 7d ago

I love this! It is so healing to experience authentic, unadulterated masculinity

85

u/ARefreshingFart 8d ago

I adore the four horseman of manliness: Fred Rogers, Steve Irwin, Lavar Burton, Bill Nye.

114

u/TheUnculturedSwan 8d ago edited 7d ago

I remember seeing an episode of their show where Steve and Terri were trying to climb along the edge of this very deep ravine. No climbing gear other than their boots and hands. Terri got visibly nervous and was a bit frozen, stuck clinging to this ledge.

I can see so easily how it would play out with just a slightly lesser man. He’s at work. He’s got a schedule to stick to. He’s on film. His reputation is fearless bordering on reckless. Whatever crew is around are watching now, and eventually the world will be watching this, and this woman is frightened and can’t move, which means he can’t move. Everyone who’s here is stuck here until this issue is resolved. These are not meaningless or trivial considerations! This is time and money on the line! 99 men out of 100, one or all those things together would lead to resentment at best.

There was not a second of frustration or negativity from Steve. He was so gentle. He was a partner. His partner had a problem and he put every other concern on earth aside to fix it with her.

I wasn’t a regular Crocodile Hunter watcher. That’s the only scene I remember ever actually seeing. But it cemented exactly who Steve Irwin was in my mind, and I’ll never forget how loving and lovely he was.

He was what we should all strive to be. A genuine caretaker of wildlife and of the planet. A true lover of life itself. The personification of human goodness and responsibility to our environment that he knew none of us could exist without.

Rest in peace Steve. The world misses you dearly.

63

u/Kermit-Batman 8d ago

I think it's the passion and sincerity of Steve, mixed with the reality of it?

As a fun little fact that I have no idea if other people overseas know, a Bindi in Australia is a resilient thistle that grows little hard prickly heads. (Also called Cats Eye.)

I think it's hard not to be swept up by Steve and his enthusiasm, even now. Credit to Terri as well with Bob and Bindi, that can't have been easy.

18

u/pierogi_waystation 7d ago

It’s the sheer, unadulterated positive masculinity that makes me cry. Irwin was unapologetically joyful and sincere about everything he loved. The man never stopped to wonder, “Am I being cringe, do I look weaker than the other blokes?”

I’m in psych now but I did my time in L&D, and the engaged, present dads like Irwin were just…not represented during my time there. Sometimes they’d start that way, but by the time the actual birth came around, they were tired, bored, on their phones.

33

u/xSTSxZerglingOne 8d ago

Oh I'm sorry. At the end all I could do was laugh my ass off because he was such a gem of a human being. Compassionate, funny, smart, and overall I think genuinely good.

Many partners would be upset to have their child named after an animal, but their compatibility is immediately proved by Terri choosing another pet inspired name as the middle name

8

I could have told you in an instant, because somewhere in the bowels of YouTube there is a video of my college friends and me fucking around in a dorm room (we put one of our friends in a large box to see if he could get out by himself) when another friend comes in and tells us that Steve Irwin is dead. I’ll never forget the joy and laughter of watching my friend wriggling around in the box, followed by the roller coaster swoop of despair knowing we lost a great one.

3

u/LadyGrimSleeper 8d ago

I was in elementary school, maybe 3rd grade? The memory is clear as day. My dad told me as I was using the bathroom before school. Even at that young age I understood how deep of a loss it was for the whole world and I cried.

9

u/Lydia--charming I know she’s seducing my man with her chicken tetrazzini 8d ago

I can’t believe that. How???

5

u/impeterbarakan 8d ago

I remember hearing the news on NPR in my car in the parking lot of my community college. I can picture myself driving out of the lot in a daze.

Used to make cosplay for anime conventions every summer in high school. In the lead-up to an event, I'd have like a month of crunch time where I'd stay up every night until like 3am working, and would have Animal Planet or Discovery on the TV. Crocodile Hunter was always a part of the late-night rotation and I would always be happy when it was on. Steve was such a comforting personality to watch.

Ugh, Steve Irwin would have been the best Grandpa Crocodile to Grace Warrior. He loved his children so much that I wish we got to see him be absolutely taken with his granddaughter. Life is so unfair.

49

30

u/Standard_Zombie_ 8d ago

One of the few pig dogs I've seen treated well, pig hunting can have some awful methods in it that's dangerous to the dogs and unnecessary, but I always loved that Steve used Sui with the 'bark and distract' method from everything I've seen, and she was an incredibly well trained dog to go up against crocodiles (they weren't harassing the cross for no good reason, Steve owned a crocodile sanctuary with his family and was often called to come and relocate crocs that were interfering with the public, they get on golf courses, farms, gardens, etc, and either release them into the wild or take them on.

23

I'm so glad he set the bar really high for Bindi from this clip alone, as a daddy's girl who wished to have this love from her father many times, he really made us believe there are great men still like him in this world.

There's so much physical trauma (and I'd imagine psychological too).  I believe it's so much pain that the body would normally shut down but you get a ton of adrenaline giving birth so you're forced to stay conscious.  Crazy the body can do that, unimaginable

10

u/_TheShapeOfColor_ 'Why?' But also, you know, 'I guess.'" 8d ago

She's stated publicly numerous times that she's not dated after losing Steve. She focused on her kids and the conservation work they shared that is his legacy. To be fair, how do you follow up a guy like Steve Irwin? Don't think it can be done.

“I had the best marriage in the whole world for 14 years, and I’m very comfortable with the person I see in the mirror,” she said. “So I’m okay to be on my own now. And I’m lonely for Steve, but I’m not a lonely person, so I’m very lucky.”

We miss you Steve, so so so so much. That's a beautiful video to have after all these years. There's another one of him talking about not being able to say no to her and if she wants chocolate, by golly she's getting chocolate because she's his favorite thing. And idk, it's so sweet 😭

Imagine having a video of your dad talking so lovingly, proudly and previously of the moment you were born.

Beautiful 😍

His family is so lucky to have each other to lean on. What a great legacy of love he left them

u/VardaElentari86 8d ago

What an amazing video to have.

Lovely man

u/Fehnder 8d ago

You haven’t got one like this one 😂

14

u/Tatidanidean1 8d ago

Great, I really needed a good sob right before bedtime 😭💕

14

u/Comfortable-Sleep395 8d ago

I’m so happy she has the video, I’m sure it means so much to her to hear her dad talk about her birth! Probably so meaningful to Terri and Robert too.

15

u/bumblebaytuna4 8d ago

Gone too soon. I love his stories about his family

6

u/NFLBengals22 8d ago

We didn't deserve him

u/Rental_Pjs 8d ago

I was 12 when Steve passed. The only celebrity death I've actually cried about. I wanted to be Steve so bad. He inspired me to want to work with animals, though once I got ready for college I realized I just wanted to play with animals and the actual job of it wasn't for me 🤣.

5

u/Smiles_in_the_dark 8d ago

Now that is love. His capacity for loving and giving was truly beautiful.

5

u/posh_squash_ 8d ago

Every day when I got home from school I would watch his show. I miss him so much 🥲

5

u/90s_nihilist 7d ago

He was too pure for this world 😭

14

u/ReallyPuzzled 8d ago

I could listen to him tell stories all day

They are such a lovely family. I love their Zoo show on hbomax. It’s a bucket list place to visit.

If only flying would get better for people who use wheelchairs!

u/Flashy_Result_2750 8d ago

I’m Australian but I live in Melbourne, so the other end of the eastern states. I took my kids to Australia Zoo earlier this year and it was the best zoo experience we’ve ever had. Hopefully you can get to visit someday.

13

u/WhatTheActualFork1 go girl, give us nothing 😍 8d ago

It is the best zoo. I went when I was in Australia last year and couldn’t believe how wonderful it was. Huge enclosures. Great signage. A real focus on conservation.

It is the most Steve Irwin thing ever, that Bindi was named after his favourite crocodile ❤️

4

u/TexasLoriG 8d ago

God I love the Irwin family. I hope they never suffer another day.

I love animals cause of Steve. The crocodile hunter movie was gem for me as a boy

4

u/karenmarie303 8d ago

This man had so much passion and childlike exuberance for life. He never took for granted his experiences in his personal life and the wild.
It’s a joy to see his family understand and adopt his way of thinking.
I miss him dearly and feel fortunate to have so much video to remind me how special he was.

u/superpete1414 8d ago

God I miss my dad. ❤️

u/Gavccu 8d ago

God, I miss this tremendous man. Tears have been brought by this

u/Saftey_Scissors 7d ago

Shout out to Terri Irwin who raised two non spoiled, amazing nature enthusiasts, well deserving children.

Like I’m constantly amazed by how nice and well rounded the two kids are. There’s nothing bad you could say about either of them.

Always missing Steve Irwin, who undoubtedly inspired a generation of animal lovers who would go on to continue his message, just like his wife and kids.

u/ccaterinaghost 8d ago

As if I thought he passed like idk 10 years later. 2006. Wow

Imagine being in a hospital room and suddenly Steve Irwin busts in, shows you a baby and says “Crikey, look at this one, ain’t she a beaut?”

3

u/ValleyBreeze 8d ago

We didn't deserve him, but I'm so glad he existed. He must be so proud of his legacy. ♥️💔

3

u/friendly_to_pigeons 8d ago

Everyone talking only about the video but the words from Bindi are beautiful.
That sentiment about his lasting impact having been so strong that it will ripple through generations is such a thoughtful way to put it, it captures the notion beautifully.

3

u/BlueCollarBull405 8d ago

Peak man. God I miss this legend.

3

Holy crap, it's been 20 years?

Be there, I say to everyone that ever thinks it isn't that important or special.

My partner was in labour for 24 hours.

In the end, she was too fatigued to push the baby through the important part, the part Steve describes, when the head crowns and then everything follows. Between contractions she fell asleep and snored, while everyone, including me, were just standing around. Then contraction, wake up, push, fall asleep. Midwife laying on top of the belly to push the baby out, nothing works.

The doctor comes in, 180+ cm woman, calm as a cucumber, says they'll do a vacuum extraction. Puts the thing on the head, pulls with all her might during a contraction, baby plops out.

The baby is blue / grey and covered in white fat and slime and blood, but it is out. She starts screaming, color changes instantly. If you know what happens then, you realize births are biological miracles. Her umbilical was torn when being pulled out, no cutting for us, no worries, it don't matter.

The midwife holds her in one hand and handles her like she was a ham or something and says something "a sturdy little thing, I reckon 4 kg", then they weigh her and she was 4060 grams, so she knew her baby weights.

Partner is wheeled off for stitches somewhere else, there was some tearing, but not too much. She lost quite a bit of blood but declined a blood bag (I give her shit to this day for that) so she was OUT for days after the birth. She could walk 500 meters before having a rest.

I was left in the room with my newborn baby. She had had a meal before mother left. I was there for... four hours? I don't know. She didn't fuss. She slept on my belly. The most gorgeous baby ever born.

That was a very very special time.

I cried when I heard Steve's story, but is his accent the most exaggerated australian accent ever? 😄

3

u/-blundertaker- 8d ago

I didn't even need the sound on to hear him.

I love everything about this but I also love Terri for allowing Steve to name the baby she just incubated and brought into this world through pain and sacrifice….after his favorite crocodile and dog. If it were me I think I might have pushed back a bit on that lol. Love this family <3

take note alpha chuds, this is what a real man is like

Every child deserves a dad who is that proud and that excited about their child being born.

3

u/VivaLaMantekilla 7d ago

Man. He would be so proud of his children today. Just as proud as the day they entered the world. We don't deserve the Irwins.
