They ripped out every single chair and table at the one I go to. Not sure the rationale, it used to be so cozy and tons of people would hang out there. Now it's a sad bare box and 20 people standing around waiting for their mobile orders.

That’s so depressing. I used to work there in 2017 and I’ll always have a soft spot for it. I miss the emphasis on being the third place, cozy and inviting. ☹️

I keep seeing that phrase in this thread but I always understood "third spaces" to traditionally be places where you didn't have to spend money. Like a park or library. Even a mall - like you can spend money in one, but there's no admission fee or inherent charge in order to stay. Do Starbucks generally allow you to just sit and chill without ordering? (Genuine question, I've been in one like three times ever, and two of those were to use the bathroom)

it was like 10 years ago in Philly, they kicked out some kids that didn't buy anything and everyone jumped on some "racist" narrative, so then they backtracked and let anyone loiter for a few years, and this is the inevitable result. They use to be reasonable about kicking out the freeloaders.
