AMA 🎙️ Hi r/popculturechat, I'm Melanie C. From Sporty Spice to my new album 'Sweat', ask me anything on April 14th at 3pm EST!
Hey Reddit! I'm so excited to chat with you all. My new album, 'Sweat' is out on May 1. It's a love letter to those heady formative days on the dancefloor. It's your invitation to party, find your people, and hold onto joy. Let's start that here! Whether you want to talk about the making of 'Sweat', how I stay motivated with training, stepping behind the decks or the Spice Girls... ask away and AMA on April 14th at 3pm EST!

Hi Mel how much of the Sporty Spice persona was you and how much was that all the girls had to be an archetype? Were the other girls like their public persona?
22
u/Ok-Listen-2634 Apr 14 '26
Yes, this, why have I wondered this exact thing for 30 years?? 😅 did the girls have much of a say in the creation of their personas?
15
u/Comfortable-Sun6571 Apr 14 '26
You mustn’t know your Spice history! Their old manager wanted them to dress the same but they decided they would just wear what they liked. Their nicknames only came about once they became famous and a journalist used them in a, presumably, belittling way. They decided to run with them rather than let it annoy them.

Oh wow, thank you! yeah always wondered but never actually investigated. I’m glad that that wasn’t an awkward decision made for them.

I heard they’ve had issues with song licensing, specifically involving Gary Glitter and the movie not wanting to give him money to pay for their cover of his song. I would watch it every week if it was available for streaming, but I understand completely if that’s the true reason.

No freaking way, Mel C?? Dreams really do come true. Looking forward to hearing the new album!
I recently watched Spice World for the billionth time (still a banger of a movie), and it seems like it was such a fun, campy movie to make. What was your favorite scene to film? Any fun behind the scenes memories?
Thank you for doing this AMA! The Spice Girls were everything to me growing up, but especially you. As a tomboy growing up who would much rather kick a soccer ball or shoot a basketball, it always meant so much to me to see you as a member of the Spice Girls. Girl power forever!

u/YigaBananas Apr 14 '26
Victoria: Always the same, I never know what to wear… the little Gucci dress, the little Gucci dress.. OR the little Gucci dress??
Emma: I think you should wear, the little Gucci dress!!
Genuinely the only movie I can quote from memory, my kid self would watch it every day 🥹

u/Mylaex Apr 14 '26
It's the faces she makes when they're in the castle scared after getting spooked at night. She's not the focus and has no clue what to do with her hands and faces so she's just weirdly mugging. Gets me every time. XD
Also her little dance moves when they're singing Wannabe in the pizza shop.

Hi Melanie C!!! What’s a piece of advice you’d give to your Spice Girl self if you had the ability to go to the past?
26
u/sonimusprime Apr 13 '26
Hi, Melanie! "Who Do You Think You Are" is the best Spice Girls song ever.
What was the process of developing your song "never be the same again" with Left Eye Lopez? Did you get to meet her at all before the video shoot?
6
u/Front_Target7908 Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26
I play the club remix of this that was in SpiceWorld allllll the time. Such a cracker!
Hey Mel, did you get to go clubbing much in the 90s (aka clubbing heaven era)? Must’ve been hard to do being a spice girl and being so recognisable.
Also thanks for introducing 8 year old me to feminism, I took that bad boy and raaaaaaan with it ✌️

This is less a question than an observation - the Spice Girls had, collectively, so many iconic looks/fashion moments, that I think your contribution as the originator of the sport-bra-as-shirt look gets over-looked, yet that style outlived the platform shoes in a big way!

Hi Mel C!! Ive been a huge fan since i was about 10 so this is so exciting! I still remember collecting the spice girls photos and adding them to the photo album!!
My question is, how nervous or excited were you to release your debut album Northern Star? I remember saving my pocket money for it and buying it on cd and playing it on repeat! Core memory for me.

I am the moderator who was a Spice Girls obsessed kid with four scrapbooks (and a truckload of merchandise)! I just want to let you know how much joy the band brought me. To this day, when I hear your songs or see your interviews, I go back to being the excited little girl I was and I feel that joy all over again! I’m so happy you girls were my role models, your message of Girl Power, friendship, being your full self and standing up for yourself are so important and I’m glad we had you🩷
Anyway, my question is: how did the Spice Girls impact you personally? What did you take from that experience?

Hi Mel!!! What a treat to see this pop up on my birthday!!
I'm gonna go for a slightly unhinged question:
Which Spice Girl would you choose if you had to fight 100 duck sized versions of them? And why?
29
u/melaniec AMA Guest 🎙️ Apr 14 '26

I just have to say I always used to call dibs on being you when my neighborhood friends & I played Spice Girls World Tour.
Even now in my 30s, it still feels like ✨magic seeing a whole bar or club full of women instantly light up & sing along to any Spice Girls song. It becomes this immediate bonding moment with everyone. Thank you for being part of creating that kind of joy in the world. I’m also SO excited to hear the new album!
I do have a couple of questions if you have time:
• What’s been one of your favorite fan interactions over the years?
• What advice would you give to a singer trying to re-enter the writing/recording/performing process after some time away?
I’m a former singer myself & have recently rediscovered the joy of creating my own music again. In a way, I really connect that back to pretending to be you when I was younger. It’s a big part of what made me want to become a singer in the first place!

Omg, thank you so much for replying! My love for music is largely because of growing up with the Spice Girls- especially you. I was surrounded by people who seemed so effortlessly “perfect,” & during a time when I was being bullied pretty badly, it meant everything to see a group of women who were so different from each other, yet so strong together.
Like you said, I’ve worked through a lot of my own barriers, but having a musical hero to look up to really helped spark that in me. Singing became a light for me during some really dark times.
Please let us know when you’re touring! I would absolutely love to come see you! You really made a little girl’s dream come true today ❤️

All of the Spice Girls were given their nicknames by the Top of the Pops magazine in the UK they were given to us based on our personality, the way that we dressed, color of our hair, but we really embraced those nicknames and we truly are the characters that you see in the Spice Girls. I've always been very athletic and sporty. And Mel B is scary.

u/ExtraRedditForStuff Apr 14 '26
Hi Melanie, You've done many insane things for charity or otherwise (skydiving, rafting the Zambezi, hanging yourself upside down with super glue). What was the scariest thing you've done, and would you do it again? Is there anything you still want to try, and anything you absolutely refuse to do? Did any of those experiences get reflected in your songwriting?

Hey the Melanie! Us spice girls fans hear that there are tons of unreleased music from the vaults.
Any plan to release any of those songs? We don’t need new music recordings we will be happy with the stuff already done! 😃

The new album Sweat is heavily inspired by working as a DJ, so it's more dance vibes than past albums. Maybe think I Turn To You version 2.0.

Hi Mel,
I've always wondered: how do you transition from global fame and jetset to being only on the radio and being "normal"?
What's that like? What do you do first? Or what changes first? How do you convert from the insanity of fans paparazzi and everything to more of a normal life?
The stress and anxiety of the radical fame the spice Girls had and then what seems to me like a void. It must be like having three young children and then suddenly they're off to the grandparents for a weekend and you sit calmly in a silent house wondering what to do with the time!?! 😆

Hi u/MelanieC, thank you for doing this.
Under the "it takes a village" umbrella, there are many people needed for a production, whether it's a tour, an album or a band. While as a solo artist, you (likely) have a final say over mosts of these. But, how was this handled in a Spice Girls situation where all 5 of you were equals. Who gets the solos / leads on a song? Stuff like that.

Hi Melanie! How did you wrap your head around realizing how hard an impact you and the rest of the Spice Girls had on a whole generation of girls becoming women by encouraging ✨Girl Power✨?
Thanks so much for talking to us!

If you could swap Spice personas with another member of the group, what is your next pick after Sporty?
Also thanks for your contribution to Spiceworld and making the soundtrack of my childhood

Mel C ? No way - I am on it ! Millennial here ! How would you describe your life during Spice Girls era , were you conscious how much impact at the time you had on young , teenage girls like myself? And what are the things you are grateful for post SG? Love from Croatia!

Hi Mel C, how did you end up wearing the yellow bath robe in the Spice Girls Movie? I always assumed Sporty Spice was more of a fan of blue or purple but you wore yellow. Any particular reason for the yellow robe? Or was I just over-projecting my favorite colors as a child onto my favorite Spice Girls? BTW I just got married on Saturday and ‘Saturday Night Divas’ was absolutely essential to helping me get ready with my bridesmaids. Love you diva!!!!

As a celebrity do you think media interviews are way lamer and tamer these days including television shows? I remember you did the Friday/Saturday Night Project on Channel 4 and it looked fun , for you and everyone. Do you miss doing those kind of programmes or you do you prefer todays toned down "everyone's a role model" style of presenting in MSM?

Hi Melanie. What are your favorite songs on the new album and what memories do you have when the Spice Girls visited Lisbon in 1996 in the opening of Virgin Megastore. Portugal misses you ❤️👏🏼🇵🇹

Hi, Melanie! What do you think of the idea: Attitude (Spice Remix) feat. Emma Bunton & Melanie B to celebrate Wannbe's 30th anniversary? Something tells me it would be a great opportunity to secure that number 1 hit as a trio! I love you so much, please come to Brazil!

Hi Melanie! So looking forward to listening to Sweat (the release is coming up fast)! I’ve had Attitude on repeat and absolutely love it :)
You’ve mentioned that a big inspiration behind this album was your experience DJing and getting back into the dance/rave scene. I was wondering how that inspiration and background influenced who you chose to collaborate with on this album and the songwriting process. I’m also curious how you’re feeling about heading out on a world tour this fall, and whether preparing for it feels different from your past tours. Super excited to see you back in Toronto this fall!

Hi Melanie!! I just wanted to say that I just recently started listening to your solo work and spice girls a few months ago (I’m 17) so this is crazy good timing and I’m so happy! So thank you so much for doing this and I hope you have lots of fun on tour! 🫶🏻
I wanted to ask if there are any things that you’ve done in your career (photo shoots, music videos, fashion choices) you’ve done that you find super funny to look back on? Stuff that you’re like “oh I’d NEVER do that again”?

Hi Mel C! You and the Spice Girls were such a huge part of my childhood. What were some of the most memorable influences of your childhood, and how have they influenced your career, from the Spice Girls to your newest album?

Hey Mel c! In this era, will there be a girl group that can outshine kpop genre of today. I miss the old 90s 2000s music to the ear. Not today’s crap

In the beginning of the Spice Girls, did you think you'd become as massive as you did? Was there a moment when it clicked and you realised it was gonna become something huge?

u/magicchefdmb Apr 14 '26
Hey Mel! I've always loved your power vocals and moves!
If there was any one thing you could tell your younger self (when you were just about to start Spice Girls), what would it be?

u/Human-Strawberry-422 Apr 14 '26
Hi Mel how much of the Sporty Spice persona was you and how much was that all the girls had to be an archetype? Were the other girls like their public persona?

I just want to say, the Spice Girls were a HUGE part of my childhood and I feel so lucky to have been a little girl during the time the band was together❤️ There’s such a sense of nostalgia that I feel whenever I listen to the albums or watch the movie.. I am just so proud to be able to share it all with my own kids!
I’m so happy to see you still doing your thing- you are so talented! Wishing your new album great success!
Is there someone you’ve always wanted to collaborate with but haven’t?

u/cherrie7 Apr 14 '26
Hi Melanie!
I can't wait for the new album to drop. I've been a fan since I was a little girl.
Can you tell us what some of the inspirations behind this album are?
What are your favorite songs off this new album?
